BASKETS of Love

Local police officers partner up for holiday cheer Area police officers filled the Battle Creek WalMart on Dec. 14 for the second annual Shop with a Cop event. Fifty kids from Calhoun County, chosen by the Department of Human Services, arrived at Wal-Mart around 9:30 a.m. on buses, provided by the city of Battle Creek, led and followed by an entourage of police cars. “I thought an event like this would be something good for the community all around,” said Kristi Angelo, Michigan State Police trooper. “I thought it would be awesome to not only help these kids, but let them meet the different departments.” This year, more than 30 officers from the Battle Creek Police Department, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Emmett Township Department of Public Safety, Springfield Department of Public Safety, Michigan State Police, Michigan DNR and Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Tribal Police participated in this event, volunteering on their own time to help the kids spend an $80 gift card. Mar Lee’s ‘Helping Hearts’ helps the homeless A YouTube video describing the realities of homelessness shown by Mar Lee middle school teacher Heather Fazekas has proven to be a powerful motivator for a group of her students. “The video touched a lot of our hearts,” said student Madison Ducheney. “So we decided to form a committee to help the homeless.” The 11-member group named itself “Helping Hearts.” These students gave up their recess two days a week to discuss how they could help the homeless. They decided to hold a sock drive in each classroom, rewarding the winning classroom with a pizza party. See photos on page 33

For the love of the season: Kathie Flynn spreads holiday cheer to those far and near In a time when technology, social media sites and e-mail have taken precedence for correspondence, Kathie Flynn of Marshall said there’s just something special about getting a hand-written Christmas card in the mail. “E-cards, Facebook and e-mail, to me that’s not as good as a card,” she said. “I want a card. It’s a small piece of art.” Flynn said with Christmas being her favorite time of year, she wants to do her part to spread holiday cheer by mailing 100-plus Christmas cards every year. “I get as much enjoyment out of sending them as those who get them. It’s a labor of love.” See story on page 44

his week the annual MACS Christmas Basket program distributed boxes of food and baskets of gifts to 200 needy families in the greater Marshall area. The overflowing tables of gifts for all ages and non-perishible food were donated by area schools, organizations, businesses and individuals, making this, “a community Christmas” according to MACS President Harriet Carroll. What is one of your favorite Christmas memories? Editor’s Corner

When many people think of the holiday season, they remember time spent with family and friends, picking out that perfect Christmas tree or a gift that was unforgettable. When asked, these six people reminisce about their own Christmas memories and share why this time of year is memorable for them.

by John Hendler It was Christmas morning,1989. I was up way too early-3:30 a.m., getting ready to go to work. I was also cold. This would be the coldest Christmas morning ever in Miami as the mercury dipped to 30 degrees. (Three days earlier, Marshall recorded its lowest December temperature ever at –18 degrees.) I was the newest hire and low man on the totem pole at the radio station I worked for: a lowly-rated AM station that played motivational tapes. While everyone else got to sleep in and spend their morning opening presents, I would “spread” the Christmas cheer by airing the likes of Zig Ziglar, Leo Buscaglia and Wayne Dyer. As I scraped the ice off my car’s windshield with an S.O.S. pad, cursing my fate, I was thinking to myself that more people would hear my grumbling in the predawn darkness compared to those who would be listening to the Motivation Station that entire morning. In the Arbitron ratings survey for 1989, it was determined that during a typical weekday quarter hour, 21 people could be found listening to my station, aka The Winners News Network. Mission accomplished on the ice removal, I went back inside my apartment to toss the S.O.S. pad when I had another brilliant idea: I would change the message on my answering machine, letting callers (and potential thieves) know that I would not be home all morning and that they could reach me at the radio station number. A kind of poor man’s call forwarding, if you will. Little did I know that my neurosis over missing a phone call would essentially save someone’s life. Shortly after my shift began at 4:30 a.m., I received a phone call from a friend I met in college. I was surprised to hear from her since she was in the middle of driving across the country during her year of “finding” herself. When we last spoke in September, she was in Dallas; now she was in Los Angeles and in trouble. She reminded me of the guy she met in Dallas and how it was love at first sight and how she asked him to join her on her road trip. The had traveled up and down the California coast and were planning to get married in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day. But the lovers’ plans took an unexpected detour - she was pregnant, and upon hearing the news, he decided to take off. It had been a week since she told him the news and she hadn’t heard from him since. She was in some cheap motel in L.A., scared and alone, having been shunned by her family. I told her that I wasn’t sure how I could help, but that I’d stay on the line with her for as long as she wanted. We talked during my entire six-hour shift, taking turns calling each other back to divide the long distance charges. I, being 25, offered what limited advice I could give her, but told her that above all else, things would be O.K. and that she would get through this. Four days later, she called to tell me that she suffered a miscarriage and that she was heading back east to her family, who had finally come to their senses and wanted her home. We eventually lost touch, but she contacted me by email a while back. She wrote that she was married and had three kids and was happier than she had ever been. She also wrote that not a Christmas passes where she doesn’t think of me. She revealed to me in that email that I was her last option; that if she hadn’t reached me that Christmas morning 24 years ago, she was ready to end her life. Me, a lifesaver? All I did was listen and tell her it was going to be O.K. But then again, sometimes just knowing that someone is listening can make all the difference in the world. A joyous and peaceful Christmas to you all, and until next week, may the good news be yours.

"When I was about 8 years old, I woke up early, 3 a.m. early, on Christmas morning, tiptoed out of my room, peered around the corner, and saw the magical sparkle of the Christmas tree surrounded by many of my Christmas wishes. I just couldn't resist beginning to play with some of the toys. Of course I was readily sent back to bed, but none of us had much sleep that night. It was great!”

"I had a son who passed away 29 years ago, just before Thanksgiving. It was a very tough time for me, but my parents saw that and took me away to Texas to see family and get away to take my mind off of it. Although he will always be in my heart and on my mind, that Christmas meant a lot to me because my parents knew I needed distance at that particular time.”

"Living at the Grand Canyon South Rim in 1989. My youngest daughter was born in October and my mom and dad came out. We took a walk and saw the Grand Canyon Railway steam locomotive come around the corner with a big red bow on the front. The steam was puffing and the big, tall pines were covered in snow. My mom and I both said it looked like a Currier and Ives print.”

Lance Hawblitz, Marshall

Dana Nichol, Kalamazoo

Jack Watson, Marshall

"Every year my mom makes homemade cinnamon rolls with icing on it. I look forward to that every Christmas.”

"When I was a kid, we would always go to my uncle’s house in Pittsburgh and get together with all my dad’s brothers and sisters, 11 of them in all. I’d get to see all my cousins and family members.”

"When I was in fifth grade, my dad came in and woke me up in the middle of the night and yelled that Santa was parked on our front lawn. I jumped out of bed, but by the time I got there, all I saw were the two runner marks in the snow from his sleigh.”

Law that helps people...Finding escheated assets By GEORGE M. STRANDER Ingram County Court Administrator and Probate Register

Fifth in a series. In this series we have been exploring the law governing how unclaimed assets, like forgotten bank accounts or lost checks, get escheated to the state. This law, the Michigan Uniform Unclaimed Property Act (UPA), details the conditions under which an asset is considered abandoned and the process by which holders

of such assets must transfer them to the state. When an asset is transferred to the state it is not thereby lost. As the Department of Treasury’s manual for reporting unclaimed property states, the main objective of the UPA is to “reunite owners or heirs with their lost or forgotten funds.” The escheating process provides for a central clearinghouse to which all people can turn to find assets to which they are entitled. Looking for escheated assets: The easiest way to look for escheated assets is to visit the Michigan Department of Treasury (www.michigan.gov/treasury ) and follow the links to Un-

claimed Property and Claiming Unclaimed Property. The department website allows people not only to search for escheated assets in Michigan but also search other states’ unclaimed asset databases. One can also search for escheated property by calling the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division at 517636-6940. In searching for unclaimed assets on the website, one must enter at least a person’s last name or a business’s name. When searching, a person should not only check to see if his or her name comes up: it makes sense to check for relatives, especially those who have passed away who may not

have told others about an asset that was escheated after their death. Filing a claim: If you search for unclaimed property and find something to which you are entitled – either because the asset is yours or because you are an heir to the deceased owner – you must then fill out and file a claim for the asset. Once you have filed the Unclaimed Property Inquiry (Form 3433), the Unclaimed Property Division will take steps to verify your claim. The documentation required to verify a claim will vary with the type and amount of the asset being claimed and whether you are the owner or an heir.
