POULTRY ...a family affair
Albion and Marshall Youth Symposium hailed a success Many arrived as strangers but after three days of working together, and learning and celebrating each others’ differences, they parted as friends. The approximately 150 Marshall and Albion high school students who attended the Youth Symposium at Albion College and Starr Commonwealth July 26-28 showed that those from different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds could come together, and flourish and set the foundation for a successful transition in September when Albion students will attend Marshall High School. Progressive Dynamics sells 2 millionth power converter On July 31, Progressive Dynamics, Inc., located on Industrial Rd., in Marshall celebrated the sale of their 2 millionth recreational vehicle power converter. “We want to celebrate the fact that we’ve reached this milestone,” said President and Chairman Ralph McGee. “We used to import a lot of products from China, but a few years ago, we brought all that product back to Marshall, and we now produce it here. We are the only American producer of converters for the RV industry.” Progressive Dynamics reached their first millionth converter sold on Sept. 15, 1999, after 34 years. It took them 14 years to sell the second millionth, and they plan to cut that time in half for their third millionth. See story on page 40
Weaver’s Ice Cream: A favorite 35 years in the making Since 1978, Ray Weaver has been a mainstay at the Calhoun County Fair, spending one week a year at his labor of love, serving ice cream to hundreds of fairgoers out of his ice cream trailer. “There have been other ice cream vendors up there, but they come and they go; we stay,” said Weaver. To know what’s unique about his ice cream, Weaver said, “You just gotta taste it.” See story on page 26

Word on the Street What did you think of the Albion/Marshall Youth Symposium?
Editor’s Corner
Approximately 150 Albion and Marshall high school students attended the July 26-28 Youth Symposium held at Albion College and Starr Commonwealth. The event brought the students together for a weekend to learn about each other and to provide leadership experiences.
by John Hendler They arrived as strangers, not one of them knowing a single soul at this new school, some 15 miles away from their homes and their old school. These children didn’t have a say in the matter; they were just told that they were now going to take a 30-minute bus ride to go to school. How frightening that must have been to a kid, even under the best of circumstances. Throw in the fact that they were black and about to enter into an almost white school. That was just over 40 years ago and I was a thirdgrader in South Florida when we were told that a few dozen kids were to be bused to our school. We, as 8 and 9-year-olds, didn’t really understand why they were coming; My friends and I agreed that going 15 miles to a new school would be scary for us even if everybody looked like us. In second grade, during the third week of school, my teacher, Mrs. Hecker, was transferred to teach sixth grade, meaning that our class was split up and dispersed to the other second grade classrooms. I remember that as one of the most traumatic memories of my childhood and I was just moving one room over. I can’t imagine what that must have been like for those kids being bused in. As odd as this sounds, the first time I ever remember seeing a school bus was when those kids arrived at my school for their first day. My music teacher, bless her heart, did her best to make our new classmates feel welcomed and as these children made their way off the bus, we proudly sang the Three Dog Night song, Black and White. My, how times have changed. Last week’s Youth Symposium for Albion and Marshall high school students laid the foundation for what will hopefully be a successful school year of transition as the Albion kids come to Marshall High School. Four decades ago, I don’t remember there be any issues for us students. These new kids were, to us, well, just kids. We were blissfully innocent and what a blessing that was. Last week at the start of the symposium, Marshall Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis said something that we kids felt was true 40 years ago: "One of things we've always said was if the adults could just get out of the way, the young people will take care of it.” Based on the reaction from the kids I spoke with last week following the event, it seems that nothing has really changed in some aspects: Regardless of skin color, kids are just kids. Hey, like The Who sang, The Kids Are Alright. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

"This was a good opportunity for the students of Albion and Marshall to come together and get to know each other, and I think we should do it again.”
"It was great. I met a lot of new people. The Albion kids were awesome. I'd like to see this event happen again. I'd stay for a week.”
"I think it was a great experience for everyone, and we got to know each other. On the first day of school, things won't be so awkward.”
Cassandra Barlow, Marshall
Brandon Womack, Albion
Daryus Mastin, Albion
"I think it was fun to meet new people and to connect with people before the school year started.”
"I thought it was pretty cool. I met a lot of new people, and they all seemed nice. A lot of people know how Marshall is now, and they don't believe the rumors anymore.”
"It was awesome. It was way better than what I expected.”
Letters Thanks to those who supported Simon Peters’ breakfast To the Editor: My husband and I want to give an enormous thank you to the many, many supporters of our son Simon’s breakfast at Zarzuela. Numerous friends, family members and Marshall residents took the time to help our son by attending this breakfast, purchasing raffle tickets and making
donations. It’s an honor to have Simon as our son, and it’s a joy to realize other people, as well, recognize what a blessing he is. A special thanks to Martha and Richard Kane of Zarzuela, Knights of Columbus council #5999, Jeanette Dyer, Andrea & Larry Cook, Todd Gillette of Family Fare, The Pinard
Family, Oerther’s, Herman’s Hardware, Jane Oliver of The Barber Parlour, and the Marshall Carriage Company for the raffle prizes, help and support you gave to bring this all together. More thanks to the many volunteers who also made it possible. We couldn’t have done it without you.
Marshall is a wonderful place to call home, and it is the perfect place for raising Simon...one would be hard pressed to find any kinder people elsewhere. Thanks and God bless you! Jim and Gretchen Peters, Marshall
Columns Legally speaking...Why do we call it a ‘lawsuit’? By GEORGE M. STRANDER Ingram County Court Administrator and Probate Register We are all familiar with the term, “lawsuit,” referring to an action in court where one party sues another. What may not be so familiar is how we came to use this term. To find out we need to look to the history of the English legal system that formed the basis for ours. L a w: As it turns out, the words “law” and “suit” came to English law from completely different sources. The term “law” is of Germanic origin, coming from the Proto-Germanic word
lagan, meaning to put or to lay. This may be where we get the idea of “laying down laws” or “laying down the law.” Prior to William the Conqueror invading England in the 1066, the Danish ruled much of the island and used their own legal system – the Danelaw. This system used the term lagu for law, coming from the older Proto-Germanic. This term was later incorporated into Old English, eventually morphing into “law.” As an aside, the Latin term for law, jus, also made it into our legal dictionary. It is the basis for terms like “just” and “justice.” Su it : The word “suit” comes to us not from Old German but via Latin by way of Old French. In Latin the word secutus means something like attended
or followed. The Old French version of this word – suitte – was applied to the company (members of the household) attending someone at court. Like liveried servants, these household members all wore the same colored and designed clothing as a mark of their connection with their master. The English word “suit” then naturally was applied to someone’s appearance at court to make a complaint or answer one. Likewise, from around the same time, and because of the uniform dress of attendants, the word began to connote a set of clothes. A little later, and for similar reasons given the groupings of color and symbol, the word “suit” came to refer to a particular set of cards within a card deck (e.g., clubs or hearts).

Thirteen teenagers ranging from grades 7-9 attended the Calhoun Area CAreer Center’s welding camp July 29-30. The participants got hands-on training during morning sessions and then in the afternoon toured Johnson System (July29) and Tenneco (July 30) in Marshall to get an introduction into manufacturing. “The response was overwhelming,” said CACC Outreach Specialist Mary Jane Cipcic. “We had no idea how many would be interested in attending so we capped it at around 15. As it turned out we had a waiting list of 35 kids. We were very disappointed that we had to turn away 35 kids.”

The 2013 Calhoun County fair celebrates 165 years of exhibiting the pride and talents of county residents of all ages.
Wheel of fortune, side shows, prize exhibits, produce, livestock, horse racing, games and much more. It became one of the main social gatherings of the year. It was often the only time people in the more rural areas got a chance to see old friends. Balloon ascensions, daredevil acts... all became a part of “The Fair.” Marshall High School’s first football game was played at the fairgrounds in 1894; the schools’ inexperienced team was defeated by Olivet College, 60-0. Throughout the 1950s and the 60s, the fair grew and prospered. The gradual addition of new and bigger mechanical rides, demolition derbies, big name entertainers and “Girlie Shows,” added to the already immense entertainment of the county’s masses. Things were good and memories were made. This year marks the 165th year of the Calhoun County Fair. It deserves to be preserved and cherished as the oldest and one of the most beloved grounds and county fairs in Michigan.

Old Maple Grove Church to be filled with music during Fair Week The Old Maple Grove Church located on the Calhoun County Fairgrounds will be filled with music during Fair Week 2013. Originally located in Eckford Township where it was built between April 1900 and March 1901, the church building was abandoned and in disrepair after a new church was built on the same property in the early 1980s. By the summer of 2006, it was scheduled for demolition to make way for a parking lot. In February of that year, the congregation donated the original structure to the Calhoun County Agricultural and Industrial Society on behalf of the Old Maple Grove Church Preservation Committee. The purpose of the committee was to save the building and relocate it to the Calhoun County Fairgrounds. Hours of fundraisers and donated labor and supplies have resulted in a successfully preserved church has added an additional venue

2013 CALHOUN COUNTY FAIR, Page 7
Calhoun County fair is 165 years old, others even older Beginning in the early 1800s, the first agricultural fairs gave rural families an opportunity to see first hand the latest agricultural techniques, equipment, crops, and livestock. Over the course of the nineteenth century, fairs also incorporated a
wide range of educational, recreational, competitive, and social activities into their programs. Within a few short generations, county and state fairs became a quintessential American tradition. Agricultural fairs celebrated human progress, science,
education, and the agrarian ideal. Before there were state and county fairs, however, most agricultural fairs were held by private individuals and organizations, or agricultural societies. In 1807, Elkanah Watson of Pittsfield, Mass. held one

By the fall of 1811, Watson's sheep shearing had evolved into the Berkshire County Fair, a major production, featuring a procession of "three or four thousand animals," a band, displays of local industries, and artisans. During the 1820s and 1830s local agricultural exhibitions floundered because private donations fell short of the money required for premiums, fair grounds, judges, transportation, publicity, and entertainment. The bouncing of cars off one another was very popular in the 1950s and remains so to this day -- especially during Fair Week. This year’s event begins at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17.

With strict rules and regulations in place, the exhilarating pandemonium of the derby is very safe for the drivers, making it one of the most unique spectacles in motorsports. While rules vary from event to event, the typical demolition derby consists of five or more drivers competing by deliberately ramming their vehicles into one another. The last driver whose vehicle is still operational is the winner.

My Head to clearer thinking, My Heart to greater loyalty, My Hands to larger service, and My Health to better living, For my club, my community, my country, and my world. The roar of mighty engines, thundering hooves, the shiny midway, and the sounds of entertainment coming from various stages on the grounds are all part of the fun of the fair. Fairgoers love this annual August departure from their daily routine. Giving all of this meaning are the dozens of 4-H club members for whom the county fair represents the accomplishment of clearly defined goals, worked toward over many months. 4-H professionals and volunteers offer guidance and help ensure that youth: •develop positive relationships with adults and peers that nurture their positive development. •are physically and emotionally safe. •are actively engaged in their own development. •are considered participants rather than recipients
During Fair Week, 2013, as you watch the 4-Hers at the fair, you will see a special maturity on their faces, one that reflects their knowing they’ve done their best. in the learning process. •develop skills that help them succeed. •recognize, understand and

Restoration of Floral Hall nears completion
The newly restored west wing of Floral Hall will be filled with Open Class fair projects specific to sewing and needlework under the ongoing supervision of Superintendent Marilyn Jones.
Four of these chandeliers are now hung in the rotunda of Floral Hall in honor of the late Joanne Moe. After a multiple-year restoration effort, the Calhoun County Floral Hall Restoration Committee, with the generous help of foundations, groups and individual donations of money, volunteer service and countless fundraisers, has come close to completing a major
restoration of the 153 year old building. All four wings of the building which was built in 1860 were removed and the rotunda was raised, excavated and new concrete footing and foundation walls were poured. Roof and joists were renovated and ventilation
windows on four walls of the octagon have been restored. Beautiful new walls have been installed and updated electrical service is now in place. Each wing has been restored, with the final west wing now ready for the upcoming fair. The side
walls in all the wings are yellow pine that won’t require anything in terms of upkeep, said John Taylor, a committee member who has been at the forefront of this massive project.
“This will be the first year that the inside of Floral Hall is more or less done,” he said. “Twenty-three broken rafters were repaired in the rotunda and seven layers of

shingles were removed, taking the roof down to the decking. “We’re still encouraging people to consider buying $100 memorial bricks, since there’s still work to be done. We sold quite a few bricks during Fair Week last year.” Some of that work includes siding the exterior, installing new doors and finishing exterior grading. “We started out with a $16,000 grant from the Marshall Community Foundation five years ago. Since then there have been donut sales, Trash to Treasure events, auctions, and Mom-to-Mom sales. During past fair weeks there have been daily raffles for prizes. We’ve received another $25,000 from the Marshall Community Foundation for the west wing and $20,000 from the Cronin Foundation,” he said. New indirect lighting has been hung in the rotunda in honor of the late Joanne Moe who was active at the fair for many years. Fair week was always something that she looked forward to. She was involved with the 4H Swine Club for many years and was known for her love of animals and raised monkeys, rabbits, horses, dogs, cats, birds, pigs, peacocks, cattle and a even a Brahma bull.

Highlight of Kids’ Day is Frog Jumping Contest
Posing before the 2012 Calhoun County Queen Contest are contestants (front) Taylor Miller, Katie Myers, Marissa Laupp, Hallie Adams, Jade Boone, (back) Crystal Seaman, Alexandrea Veale, Veronica Hetke, Danielle Heisler, and Neisha Hart. Who will wear the crown this year?
Things will be hoppin’ at the Calhoun County Fair beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13. This Kids’ Day highlight takes place on the activity pad by Houston School. Frog jumping is a competitive pastime in which frogs compete by jumping certain distances. Frog jumping was made famous in a short story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain. " An event has been held annually
in Calaveras County since 1928. The contest has strict rules regulating the frogs' welfare, including limiting the daily number of a frog's jumps, and mandating the playing of calming music in their enclosures. Many frogs can jump at
least 30 times their body length, and some smaller species of tree frogs can jump 50 times their length. This is the human equivalent of jumping the length of a football field without a running start.
The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County Many think that The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain was the beginning of a national interest in frog jumping contests. ***** Jim Smiley loves to bet. Once, Jim caught a frog and named it Dan'l Webster. For three months, he trained the frog to jump. At the end of those three months, the frog could jump over more ground than any other. Jim carried the frog around in a box. One day, a stranger to the town asks Jim what is in the box of his. Jim tells that in the box is a frog that can out jump any other frog in Calaveras county. The stranger tells Jim if he
had a frog, he'd bet him $40 that the frog he had could beat Jim's. Jim agrees, and he gives the box to the stranger to hold while Jim goes off to catch another frog for the stranger. While Jim is away, the stranger pours lead shot into the frog's mouth.
When Jim comes back, they set the frogs up ready to begin. They aligned the frogs up evenly, and on the count of three let them loose. The freshly caught frog (the stranger's) jumped off, while Dan'l Webster didn't budge a bit. Jim was surprised and disgusted. He gave the money to the stranger and the stranger giddily left. Jim wonders why Dan'l looks all of the sudden so plumpy. He takes the frog and tips him upside down. The frog coughed out handfuls of shot. Jim set the frog down, and chased after the stranger. But the stranger was long gone, and Jim never caught up to him.
2013 Calhoun County Fair begins with selection of royalty In mid-August, Calhoun County is treated to its annual fair. For 165 years, 4-H members, carousel riders, and area neighbors have turned the fairgrounds into a colorful, magical place. Kicking-off the yearly celebration is the Calhoun County Fair Queen Contest, held this year on the Community Stage. The fun begins at 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 11.

Enduro Car Racing, a debut event at the 165th Calhoun County Fair Just in time for the 165th birthday of the Calhoun County Fair, event organizers have added an enduro race to the 2013 schedule of events. Enduro car racing is an inexpensive type of automobile racing that takes its name from "endurance racing," since it consists of hundreds of laps around a designated track. Enduro racing involves stock-based cars that have had their interior and side or rear windows removed but are mostly stock mechanically. mores and accepted forms of popular entertainment, such as vaudeville. Deli Marcella Locke, as an example, was a California fair-goer in the 1850s and 1860s who saw sewing and washing machines, a printing press, and stereoscopic pictures for the first time at her county fair. Horse racing proved to be one of the most popular and controversial activities, especially women's horse racing. At the 1854 Iowa State Fair, prizes for women's horse racing included a gold watch, a premium of $165, or a scholarship to study at a nearby seminary for three terms. Yet critics decried the immorality of the sport and the immodesty of female riders. By the late 1860s, fair boards and legislatures across the country limited, or even banned, women's equestrian events. During the Civil War, the military used state fairgrounds in the midwest to
train soldiers, forcing agricultural societies to either relocate or cancel annual events. Following the Civil War, fairs enjoyed a renewed popularity as states increased funding to construct permanent fairgrounds, complete with buildings and a midway. After 1870, political speeches, carnival games, vaudevillian performances, and enticing edibles became part of the fair-going experience. Since the early 1800s, fairs were about much more than education and amusement; they helped guide rural people through an increasingly modern world, whether it was introducing them to new equipment or forms of entertainment. Even today, fairgoers celebrate agricultural achievements and enjoy exhibitions, food, carnival rides, entertainment, competitions, and well-known concert performers.

Chuck Wagon racing rides into the Calhoun County Fair Chuck Wagon races have become a crowd favorite at the Calhoun County Fair. This year, the free event takes place beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, in the Grandstand.
Each race begins with outriders "breaking camp."
STANDARD PRINTING & O F F I C E S U P P LY We Salute… THE CALHOUN COUNTY FAIR
“A Summertime Tradition for 165 Years”
Our County Fair is Americana at it’s best. It is involvement and entertainment for the young and the young at heart. It’s the twinkle in a toddler’s eye and fond memories for our senior citizens. It is anticipation, a sleepless night. A lifetime lesson in basic values and the deep sense of pride in a job well done for our 4-H members. It’s animals and carnivals and homemade apple pie. It is a very large slice of what’s still right with America.
Chuck Wagon racing is an equestrian rodeo sport in which drivers race around a track steering a wagon led by a team of horses. Each race begins with outriders "breaking camp," and tossing their gear into the back of their wagon before climbing in themselves and holding on for dear life as the wagon completes a figure-eight around two barrels then circles the race track. The wagon with the best time wins, taking into account the penalties that are assessed for infractions such as knocking over a barrel, not clearing everything from a camp site, or interfering with another wagon. The folklore of chuck wagon racing suggests that it began when cowboys, living and working on the range, had completed their chores and were ready to return to town. When the work was done, all the supplies were pitched into the wagon and the cooks would race to town. Cowboys, known as outriders would team up with their own cook and wagon and together, all would join in the race. The last team to arrive at the saloon would have to buy a round of drinks for the winners. And so the sport of chuck wagon racing was born. This free 2013 Grandstand event takes place beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Tractor pulling is a fair favorite 1848
This sport is known as the world's most powerful motorsport, due to the multi-engined modified tractor pullers. The first engine-powered farm tractors used steam and were introduced in 1868. These engines were built as small road locomotives and were operated by one man if the engine weighed fewer than 5 tons. They were used for general road haulage and in particular by the timber trade. The most popular steam tractor was the Garrett 4CD. Once tractors were invented, it only stands to reason that one farmer would claim his tractor had more power, so away they went. Even the oldest tractors ended up being put into a contest to
see who had the most powerful machine. Originally, tractors were pitted against one another by being hooked together directly but this proved to be very hard on equipment and the jerking back and forth resulted in a lot of broken parts. Taking turns pulling a heavy load turned out to be the best way to prove who had the most pulling power and that method became the norm. The first organized tractor pulling events took place along about 1929 but really didn't gain much widespread popularity until the 50s and
60s. It wasn't very organized though with the rules varying from event to event. This made it hard for competitors to compete in different counties or states so in 1969, representatives from 8 states got together, came up with a uniform set of rules and founded the NTPA (National Tractor Pullers Association). This is really when the sport of tractor pulling was born. They had only two classes, stock and modified. Stock being just that, tractors just as you would buy them from the dealer, unmodified in any way. The modified class included tractors with non-

tractor engines and other modifications. They used the basic dead weight sled that carried over from the horse pulling competitions. Most of the tractor pulls in this era took place at county or state fairs. Tractor pulling, also known as power pulling, is a motorsport competition that requires modified tractors to pull a heavy sledge (sled) along a 35 ft wide and length of 100 meter or 300 ft+ track, with the winner being the tractor that pulls the sledge farthest. The sport is known as the world's most powerful motorsport, due to the multi-engined modified tractor pullers. All tractors in their respective classes pull a set weight in the sledge. When a tractor gets to the end of the 100 metre (300 feet) track this is known as a "full pull." To see how well your favorite entrant fairs, attend the LaVern Smith Memorial Tractor Pull, Tuesday, Aug. 13, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Grandstand.

Houston School to be open during Calhoun County Fair The members of the Houston School Move & Restoration Committee will be staffing Houston School, located on the Calhoun County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the week of the fair. Soft drinks, ice cream and water will be available for sale each day and from time to time throughout the week, Margaret Parker will introduce visitors to historic children’s games. A map of 1857 was the first record found of a school near the corner of what is now 13 1/2 Mile Road and C Drive South. The Houston School, at that location operated through 1967 when it was annexed to the Marshall Public Schools. In 1972 Robert Boughton who owned the land that part of the school sat on donated his portion of the land to Fredonia Grange, which purchased the school for $300 for the purpose of preserving it.* In 2000, the school was donated to the C.C.A.I.S. and in 2004, the Houston School Committee was formed. The school was taken apart in sections and moved to the Calhoun
