Principal Linda Bennink bids farewell to Gordon Elementary School A highlight of the last week of school at Gordon Elementary was a surprise farewell event for retiring Principal Linda Bennink. A call from Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis’ office requesting her presence got Bennink away from the school long enough to give the entire student body time to line each side of Gordon St. with farewell signs and Gordon Golden Stars to wave at her as Davis drove Bennink back to the school. Word on the Street What is your best memory with your father? Editor’s Corner by John Hendler The day my son was born, I remember that when it was time to change his diaper, two clueless parents had to call a nurse to come into the room to give us a tutorial on what to do. I remember when he was a couple weeks old, my wife went for a walk with a friend around the neighborhood leaving me in charge. She was gone about 45 minutes. To me, that seemed like days and upon her return, I shrieked: Don’t you ever leave me alone with a baby again! Talk about karma: A few weeks later, with my wife in the Navy and travelling often and us tired of shuttling our son off to daycare for 10 hours a day, 20 miles away, I left my broadcasting job in Chicago to stay home with my newborn son. Hopefully, he won’t read the following, but I was completely clueless (naturally) on what to do, and he, thankfully, was clueless to the fact that he was my first guinea pig. There was lots of trial and error, but within a couple of months, I was getting the hang of this daddy thing and could change a diaper faster than pit crews could change four tires at Daytona. (I won’t bore you with my other superlatives.) When my daughter arrived less than two years later, I was no longer an apprentice, but a fullfledged Mr. Mom. I stayed home with my kids for eight years and during that time, I slept little, relaxed even less and had virtually no time to myself. There were those frustrating days (and nights) that I thought would never end. Sometimes, it felt as if the children would perpetually stay babies, like comic strip characters. I admit, there were some days that I wished they would just grow up already and be able to go to school so I could go back to work. But then there were days I wish I could have back: the first steps, the first words, the first day of school. I was privileged to be there for all of those milestones. I was privileged to be there for every day. What a lucky guy I was and still am. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing, not even for a million dollars. Well, maybe for two million. Just kidding. Staying home with my kids was the hardest job I ever had, but it was also the most rewarding job I ever had. Until next week, may the good news be yours.
Father’s Day is June 15 and many people will be trying to find that perfect gift for dad. But memories can provide some of the best gifts to be shared by all. What’s your favorite memory of time spent with your dad?

"My first beer, a Busch Light, with my dad while we were ice fishing.
"When my father bought me my first beer. It was a magical experience.”
"Last Wednesday when my dad turned 60. We had a great time. We are having a big party for him on Saturday.”

Bill Hamilton, Galesburg
Rich Nicka, Albion
"I remember the one time when he "Christmas 2007 when we went to Las Vegas together as a family. It was took me on fishing trip when I was about 14 years old. We went to St. definitely a good trip. Or when he Joe River. He caught more fish.” called me one day out of the blue to tell me that he had tipped a golf cart over on the course going sideways on a hill. He’s always hilarious.”

"A pheasant hunting trip when I was 11 years old in Illinois. I was a husky kid and we had to walk five miles, without a hunting dog, to find birds. When we came up to a ditch he told me to be ready. When we got near, it exploded with 5060 pheasants. I aimed to shoot and took a step, but there was no ground under the snow. I went face first, gun and all, rolling down the 30-foot ditch. My father stood at the top of the hill with two pheasants in his hand and yelled down to me, ‘What are you doing down there? Did you get any?’ When I walked back up empty handed, he showed me how to clean the snow out of my gun so it wouldn’t blow up and he didn’t even yell at me. He was a pretty good guy.”
Congratulations AGLP on a job well done To the Editor: After 25 years, hundreds of students, and many leadership opportunities for students and adults alike, the Alaska Great Lakes Project will send the final group to Alaska this Saturday, June 14. My two daughters were both involved in the program on repeated occasions, and are going on to accom-
plish wonderful things, have incredible experiences and are pushing themselves out of their comfort zone on a regular basis. As a result, they continue to grow as individuals, and I attribute this in part to their experiences on the AGLP. Please join me, and I am sure many other folks that have been involved in the program through the years,
in congratulating Dale Rosene for providing such a unique opportunity to the children of Marshall. Without his vision and initiative, none of those who have participated in the program would have had these experiences or the memories that they evoke. While planning and completing all the elements of the program is a huge job
for Mr. Rosene, he has always said his primary responsibility is to bring every child home safely to his or her parents, which he has done every year of the program. Congratulations, Dale, on a job well done. George Seifert, Marshall
The last mission: Talons Out Honor Flight To the Editor: On May 31, I relived a trip I took to Washington, D.C., which I took last year. I went to Kalamazoo to see 81 veterans return with their guardians. This program originated in Wisconsin with two gentleman wanting to send a friend to Washington to see the war memorials. It now has a program
to send veterans also from wars other than World War II, even for veterans that are terminally ill. Since last year, I have received $710 for the program. We (the Marshall VFW Post 4073), had a spaghetti dinner, which raised $1,200, and paid for two veterans way on the trip. In July, we will have a breakfast spon-
sored by a motorcycle group to raise money for the next trip on Sept. 27. On another note, the VFW is also hoping to sell enough memorial bricks to compete the second memorial wall at the Veterans Memorial, across from Brooks Fountain. Merlin Shaver, Marshall

35th Supermileage competition in Marshall Power management company Eaton Corporation announced last week that five college teams achieved more than 1,000 miles per gallon in specially designed vehicles during the SAE Supermileage event held June 56 at Eaton's Proving Grounds in Marshall. This was the 35th year for the competition which challenges teams to build a one-person, fuel efficient vehicle based around a one-cylinder, four-cycle engine. “It is truly amazing what these student teams were able to accomplish,” said Tom Stover, chief technology officer for Eaton's Vehicle Group in Galesburg, Michigan. “The Supermileage competition helps them develop practical engineering, team building and leadership skills that they can use to succeed in their careers, including making tomorrow's cars and trucks more fuel efficient.” A team from Université Laval in Quebec, Canada, was the overall winner of this year's Supermileage competition. The team, which received a total score of 1,533 (1,145 mpg plus its Design Report score of 388), won $1,500 and will be recognized at the SAE 2014 Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress held Oct 7-9 in Rosemont, Illinois. Another Quebec school, École De Technologie Superieur, finished second with a score of 1,517 (1,134 mpg plus 383 points for its Design Report), followed closely by Brigham Young University's tally of 1,514, which included the best overall fuel economy run of 1,211 mpg - marking the second straight year Brigham Young has had the most fuel efficient vehicle in the competition. These schools received $1,200 and $900, respectively. Rounding out the top five were teams from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst with 1,485 (1,142 mpg plus 343 Design Report points) and Penn State University Behrend College with 1,410 (1,020 mpg plus 390 Design Report points). A team from the University of California - Los Angeles won the Design Report portion of the competition with a score of 408. The University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign team won the Best Newcomer Award. The City College of New York was chosen by the event organizing committee to have the Best Design Execution; Ryerson University received the Best Demonstrated Overall Team Attitude award; and Concordia University won the 35th Anniversary Endurance Award (minimum of five successful fuel economy runs). Hosted by Eaton since its inception in 1980, the

The SAE Supermileage Competition was held for the 35th time at Eaton Proving Grounds June 5-6.
A team from Universidad Simón Bolívar in Caracas, Venezuela, made the trip to Marshall. Supermileage event is designed to generate public awareness of high-mileage fuel economy and to promote automotive engineering as a career choice for students. Participants are encouraged to use advanced materials and technologies, as well as their design creativity and imaginations, to get the most out of their vehicles over the 9.6-mile course - six times around Eaton's 1.6mile test track. The winning team at the first Supermileage competition in 1980 achieved 558 mpg. Teams from 19 colleges competed in this year's Supermileage event, including five teams from Canada and one from Venezuela. Penn State won the 2013 Supermileage competition.
