In The News: MPS and Mar Lee Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis named Regional Superintendent of the Year Region 7 of the Michigan Association of School Administrators has named Marshall Public Schools and Mar Lee School District Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis as its 2014 MASA Regional Superintendent of the Year Award recipient. Davis will receive the award Nov. 21 at a Region 7 meeting to be held at the Kalamazoo Regional Service Agency. “None of this could be possible without the Board and their guidance as well as the hard work of my administrative team and all of our staff within the organization,” said Davis at the Nov. 11 Board work session. “It’s been a great four and a half, working on five years and I appreciate the support and the recognition from my colleagues. Thank you.” See story on page 16
Operation CommUNITY kickoff draws large crowd More than 100 people turned out Nov. 12 at Schuler’s Restaurant in Marshall for the Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance’s (MAEDA) kickoff event, Operation CommUNITY, to boost volunteerism in Marshall. "I’m very pleased and blessed to stand before you," said MAEDA CEO John Coulter, who noted that he was encouraged by the turnout because he only recognized about half the crowd. "That means that the message is getting out, that there are good things that are happening in Marshall, and that it's not about who you know; it's about whether you want to help, and it's about what do you have to offer and what do you need.” See story on page 46
Day in the Life of an innkeeper: Barb Bradley shares her love for her job When Barb Bradley began working part time at the National House Inn bed and breakfast in 1982 as a decorator, she never dreamed she would one day become the innkeeper and owner. “As a child I would beg my father to go around the Brooks Memorial Fountain again and again,” Bradley said. “I knew then that a lot of my lifetime was going to be spent at that circle. I just didn’t know that my life was going to be here at the National House Inn...I often think you are to be planted somewhere. Sometimes, it takes people a while to find where they should be planted, but I was blessed with that quite early in my life.” See story on page 26
Marshall United Way 2013 exceeds campaign, shows ‘Neighbors Helping Neighbors’ The 2013-14 Marshall United Way campaign has exceeded its goal of $140,000. “For Marshall, giving is a passion,” said Executive Director Patty Franke Williams, adding that the campaign was indeed about “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.” The United Way raised a total of $149,919 and donations are still coming in. Marshall Veterans Day ceremony sees a large turnout On Monday, Nov. 11 approximately 200 people came out to show their support at the 2013 Veterans Day ceremony in Marshall. “I am overwhelmed by the amount of people here today,” said VFW Commander Rolene Amsler. “Today is a day to ensure veterans know that they are deeply appreciated for the sacrifices they have made to keep our country free.” See photos on page 37

Word on the Street What do you think of retailers opening early on Thanksgiving?
Editor’s Corner
More of the nation’s big retailers will be opening their doors earlier on Thanksgiving to get a jump on the holiday shopping season, prompting many to say that Thanksgiving is losing it’s meaning as a time to be thankful for family and friends.
by John Hendler Lots of congratulations to go around this week. First, congratulations to the swimmers from Marshall High School that will be going to the state meet in Holland next weekend. That group includes Jessica Bush, Nina Hendler, Taylor Karns, Monica Lubis, Anna Sitar, Brooklyn Tobias and Jane Turner. It’s amazing how the entire swim team performed at the SMAC East meet as many of the 30-plus girls on the team recorded season-best times. Kudos to coach Dave Karns and assistant coach Steve Weaver for the great job and kudos to the girls for all their hard work and dedication that started way back in early August. Try swimming thousands of yards each and every day for three and a half months. That’s a lot of mileage and a lot of heart. Congratulations, girls on a great season in one of the most physically demanding sports. And while we’re talking sports, belated congratulations are in order to Kurt Swaton for qualifying for the state cross-country finals and to the MHS girls golf team of Alena Buczynski, Annie Cape, Shannon Hicks, Sammi Price and Jill Puckett for getting not only to the state tournament but also achieving team academic allstate status. And congratulations to Jill for individual all-state academic recognition. Congratulations to John Coulter and his group at MAEDA, the Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance, for their efforts and to those that turned out to the alliance’s kickoff event at Schuler’s last Tuesday. It seems that volunteerism is alive and well in Marshall. Congratulations are also in order to Marshall Public Schools and Mar Lee Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis on his being chosen as Region 7 Superintendent of the Year. With all that he and his staff have accomplished in his nearly five years in Marshall, he would be the frontrunner for Superintendent of the Decade if there was such an award. And now, for a little self promotion: Congratulations to the ad-visor&chronicle’s Corinne Kellogg for her photographic awards from the Michigan Press Association. Every year, she and I would debate whether we should enter the editorial and photography contest, and so after much hemming and hawing, we decided to finally go for it this year. So, congratulations Corinne for a job well done. And finally, a big thank you to those in the community who have offered their kind words to me on my first place selection for local columnist by the Michigan Press Association. It’s nice to be recognized, but it has truly been my pleasure to inform, entertain (and sometimes annoy) our readers with my weekly column over the past seven years. Along with taking photos, it’s the most challenging and enjoyable part of my job. Thank you for your support and readership and until next week, may the good news be yours.

"I think it’s ridiculous. It’s a holiday where time is supposed to be spent with family, not shopping. It keeps employees away from their families.”
"I stay as far away from stores as possible on Black Friday. I did it one year, and that was enough.”
"I hate it. I’m not a fan of Black Friday shopping, anyway.”
Tom Willard, Marshall
Bob Weyer, Marshall
Travis Bakeman, Kalamazoo
"It’s a crime against people who have to work that night.”
"I’m not in favor of it. They are doing it because there is one less week of shopping, but people who work on Thanksgiving should be with their families.”
"I don’t like that it cuts into my sleeping time after dinner.”

Plan ahead and be safe this hunting season By LEE FRIEND Marshall Police Officer Michigan has a rich and time honored tradition of hunting in the fall, and with hunting season upon us, there are several tips for hunters to have a safe out of doors experience. Making a hunting excursion a safe and responsible experience is key to having a memorable and great time in the woods. The Marshall Police Department would like to remind all hunters to plan ahead for the season and to be safe. Please review the following safety tips: • Every firearm should be treated as if it is loaded, and be sure to always point the muzzle in a safe direction. • Be absolutely sure of what your target is and what is beyond it. You must be able to identify the features of the game you are hunting. • Have a flashlight or headlamp on
when entering and exiting your hunting area. • Always avoid alcoholic beverages prior to hunting and during hunting, as well as any other mind or behavior altering medicines or drugs. • For firearms deer season, camouflage hunter orange is legal, provided 50 percent of the surface area is solid hunter orange. All hunters on any land during hunting hours must wear a hat, cap, vest, jacket, rainwear or other outer garment of hunter orange (or the camouflage hunter orange) which is visible from all sides. • While traveling to and leaving your blind, always unload your gun. • Telling someone you know where you are hunting and when you are expected back is essential. This will help locate you if you happen to get lost or hurt in the woods. If possible, put your plans down on paper with dates, times, location and expected time of return. • Take your cell phone into the woods with you, with the ringer turned off and set to vibrate. If you are hurt, your cell phone will discharge a signal
which will help rescuers locate you if you are lost. Plus, your phone may be equipped with a GPS system to help you. • Never run, jump or climb with a loaded firearm. If you need to climb a fence or tree, unload your firearm. • Keep your finger outside the trigger guard and off the trigger until you are ready to shoot at your deer. • Deer hunting hours are from one half-hour before sunrise to one halfhour after sunset. It’s always important to know your own comfort level and to not over-exert yourself. If you need to take a break while finding your hunting area, do so. Nov. 15 began the firearms season for 2013. By following these basic rules of safety you can expect to enjoy a funfilled experience in the out of doors in our beautiful state of Michigan. If you would like further information about hunting in Michigan or about the rules and regulations surrounding the firearms deer season, go to www.Michigan.gov/DNR.

KCC’s 2013-14 basketball seasons underway
Caron Chevrolet, one of 22 Chevrolet dealers that partnered with local youth baseball leagues for the 2013 baseball program, has concluded a successful season with City of Marshall Rec. Caron Chevrolet provided City of Marshall Rec with new equipment, a monetary contribution and an opportunity for community members to enter the free Chevrolet vehicle sweepstakes. "Chevrolet has a long history with baseball, and we're
glad we were able to bring that tradition to our youth leagues in Marshall," said Tim Rowe, sales manager for Caron Chevrolet. Caron Chevrolet partnered with the City of Marshall Rec because of the league's proximity to the dealership. Equipment donated by Caron Chevrolet included items such as equipment bags, baseball buckets, practice hitting nets, umpire ball bags, batting tees and Chevrolet Youth Baseball T-shirts. In addition, the dealership
helped donate either a Chevy Malibu or a Chevy Traverse as the grand prize for a free regional sweepstakes. The winner of the sweepstakes selected their choice between the two vehicles. "We truly enjoy being involved with the classic American tradition of youth baseball," said Rowe. "Sponsoring City of Marshall Rec gave us the opportunity to show our commitment to the youth and families in Marshall, and we are thrilled to have achieved
such positive results for the community." In 2013, more than 1,600 Chevrolet dealers participated in Chevy Youth Baseball. Since the program began in 2006, Chevrolet has made a positive impact on more than 3.6 million children by bringing a unique experience to their community.
