In The News: ‘Dark Horse Nation’ puts Marshall in the national spotlight Marshall will be thrust into the national spotlight when the History Channel premieres the series Dark Horse Nation next week. Dark Horse Nation, a new 12-episode series combines great beer, innovation and renegade entrepreneurialism as it follows the day-to-day adventures of the Dark Horse Brewing Company. Led by rebel entrepreneur and fearless visionary, Aaron Morse, Dark Horse is a thriving business set amongst a rural paradise. Morse and his team have been making a name for themselves since 1997, when Dark Horse started bottling its unique line of craft beers. Now distributed in 12 states, the Dark Horse crew is determined to turn their business into a household name. Its die-hard fan base even has its own nickname: Dark Horse Nation. See story on page 20

Marshall Regional Law Enforcement Center has groundbreaking ceremony After first being proposed nearly two decades ago, the reality of a joint law enforcement facility took a major leap forward July 22 with the official groundbreaking ceremony in Marshall. The nearly $12 million building will house state, county and Marshall police and will be located adjacent to Walters Elementary and Marshall High School and will be accessed from Old 27. The building is expected to open in fall 2015. More than 50 law enforcement personnel and local leaders attended the ceremony. “The most important thing I want to talk about really is what this post is going to represent,” said Marshall Mayor Jim Dyer. “I believe very strongly that there is nothing that we do as government that is more important than protecting and serving our citizens and that is what a police department does.” See story on page 25

Children find sense of self through art Religious speaker Joyce Meyer says that “Teachers can change lives with just the right mix of chalk and challenges.” Marshall Academy art teacher Lisa Howell is doing just that by inspiring hope, igniting imagination and instilling a love of learning in her students, grades kindergarten through 12 grade. Watching the artwork from approximately 225 students come out of her classroom year after year, Howell became encouraged to share her student’s artwork with the world. “I wanted a chance to show the community what’s happening inside the art classroom,” she said. “The student’s art pieces represent professional artists.” See story on page 48

Palm Tees expands business Jon Hammond of Marshall is branching out his custom T-shirt and apparel printing business, Palm Tees, from a mobile business to a storefront, 111 Redfield Plaza in Marshall. Hammond, 29, a 2003 Marshall High School graduate, learned the art of printing T-shirts during an internship for sporting events at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex after he graduated in 2007 from Northwood University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. In 2011, Hammond and his wife, Carli, whom he met at Disney World, decided to move back to Marshall and start a T-shirt printing business by purchasing the same equipment he had used at Disney World. “I wanted to set up my business a little different than most and fully take advantage of Marshall’s central location,” he said. Word on the Street What is the secret to your longevity? Editor’s Corner

On July 22, Calhoun County Senior Services held a Centenarian Luncheon in Marshall to honor those that are 100 years of age or older or for those about to hit the century mark. We asked these six women what their secret was to their longevity.

by John Hendler Are you ready for prime time Marshall? The announcement that the Dark Horse Brewing Co. was going to have its own TV series was made official last week, although there’s been a certain buzz around Marshall for months ever since film crews came to town last fall. Dark Horse Nation will premiere on the History Channel July 29 at 10 p.m. The show features the Dark Horse’s brewing business and those that have made Dark Horse a household name in the region. And now, a household name across the country. I had the chance to talk to Dark Horse owner Aaron Morse and to John Churchill, aka Cabe, last week. “It’s been cool and it’s definitely been busy,” said Aaron. “It’s definitely kind of surreal. Even though the show was never announced (officially until last week), there’s been buzz about something going on. There has been this buzz for about the last six to eight months. The last few days we’ve had people come in because they’ve seen the trailers on TV.” Cabe shared the sentiment. “Connecting your face either on History and/or on television and social media, and having people point out that they saw your picture...putting those things together is the surreal part for me,” he said. On Tuesday, the Dark Horse will have two large screens in its Beer Garden for patrons to watch the show. “We’re also going to have Red Carpet, but we are going to do it for the patrons,” said Aaron. “They’ll get to walk down the Red Carpet and then there will be a little backdrop that they get to stop in front of and have their picture taken and then that picture will be either texted or e-mailed to them...We’re going to make it more for the patrons than about us.” Aaron added that if fans DVR the show, they need to watch it within 48 hours so it will count in the ratings. Aaron and Cabe said that they have not seen the episode so they will be viewing it for the first time along with their patrons Tuesday night. “It’s definitely going to be weird seeing myself on TV,” said Aaron. “We have been on the news before for something small. Actually seeing ourselves in a show is definitely going to be weird.” Added Cabe: “This is a nationwide setting and I can’t grasp that. Who knows who will see me. That’s definitely surreal.” Aaron said viewers will get an honest look about the Dark Horse and the people of Marshall. “They don’t know us, they don’t know what we’re about,” said Aaron. “It’s about them getting to know us through the show, how we are and what we stand for. I think the show is going to be a good one for that. I think we stood true to everything that we are and stand for and I believe the show is a good representation of that.” Congratulations guys and the best of luck to you. Tuesday should be a lot of fun. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

Interactive cinema on Common Core July 29 in BC To the Editor: An interactive cinema on Common Core is coming to Battle Creek. This is an opportunity for parents, teachers and school board members to learn more about the unlawful federal take-over of education in America's schools. The cinema will be held at West Columbia 7 Theater on Tuesday, July 29 at 7:30 p.m. “We Will Not Con-

form” is our chance to be part of a nationwide effort to protect America's children and our rights as citizens and parents. We will hear from experts like Michelle Malkin, David Barton and others as they explain the dangers of this insidious plan which robs local and state control of education. This isn't a typical show; it is an interactive experience and a rare op-

portunity to make a real difference in the American education system. “We Will Not Conform” is our chance to not only hear from the experts but to join live with fellow theatergoers across the country to develop tangible strategies in the pursuit of enacting real change in our schools. By the end of the night the brain power, experience, and passion of cin-

ema audiences nationwide will be captured in a unified plan of action to be distributed to all participants. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $16 each. J ane Wilson, Marshall

It eliminates the Personal Property Tax on small businesses such as mine, to make Michigan more competitive with businesses in neighboring states that don’t

charge the tax. The proposal also asks voters to create a more stable funding system for local governments to provide important services such as police, fire, jails, ambulances, schools, libraries and roads. Since many communities rely on Personal Property Tax revenues to fund critical services, the proposal guarantees that 100 percent

of that estimated money will be replaced – with NO tax increase to our residents. Please Vote yes on Proposal 1. Nicole M a t u r en , Portage
