In The News:

Albion Public Schools hears back from Treasury The Office of School Review and Fiscal Accountability from the Michigan Department of Treasury Director Paul Connors, along with colleague Tom Tebow, made a return visit before the Albion Public Schools Board of Education Nov. 24 to give an update on the school district's financial situation. The board was presented with what Tebow described as a “detailed budget” for the current 2015-16 fiscal year. The good news, said Tebow, is that the school district has “done a good job making a balanced budget,” but also noted that “as soon as you print it, it’s wrong.” “Something always pops up, since it’s a living document,” he said. The bad news is that the school district still has a $1.8 million deficit that needs to be addressed. See story on page 9 Retail Open House is Dec. 4 Marshall’s downtown will see hundreds of visitors for the annual Retail Open House, a more than three decades-long tradition, which will take place Dec. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. “It’s been said that, if each of us spent $100 a year more on local businesses, instead of chain stores, it would put an extra $3 million a year into our economy and would help create jobs,” said Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance Director Keith Kehlbeck. “In a small town like Marshall, that potential impact is huge. I can’t overestimate the importance retail sales have on keeping communities vibrant, growing and successful, and the annual Retail Open House is a great way to showcase all that Marshall has to offer. Shop small, shop local and come enjoy the ambiance of the ‘City of Hospitality’ during the holidays.” See story on page 6 Determined to beat cancer, Kari Jolink shares her story with the community Just over six months ago, Kari Jolink wasn’t quite feeling up to par. The sixth grade teacher at Marshall Middle School noticed that she was coughing a lot as well as getting winded just from going up a flight of stairs, something out of the ordinary for the former Marshall High School sports standout. “Being an athlete, I thought I was just out of shape,” said Jolink, who had not exercised much in the previous month because of a foot injury. Days later came the improbable diagnosis: The 32-year-old, who never smoked a day in her life, had stage 4 lung cancer. See story on page 20 Marshall Public Schools placed on the College Board's 6th Annual AP District Honor Roll Marshall Public Schools is one of 425 school districts in the United States and Canada and one of 15 in the state of Michigan being honored by the College Board with placement on the 6th Annual AP District Honor Roll. This is the second year in a row and third time in six years that Marshall High School was recognized. See story on page 12 Chemical Bank gives to the Bohm The Friends of the Bohm Theatre recognize the Chemical Bank Foundation for awarding the theatre $15,000 in support of its restoration. T

he holiday season begins Monday, Nov. 30, when the annual Christmas Parade makes its way through downtown Marshall. At the helm will be Grand Marshal Merle Shaver, representing the Hometown Heroes honored by the festivities. Bringing up the end, as always, will be St. Nick himself, who will spend much of December listening to the wishes of young girls and boys at various local businesses. See story on page 2

Columns Presidents have influenced Thanksgiving holiday By GARY SCOTT SMITH Guest Columnist

Editor’s Corner by John Hendler My most memorable Thanksgiving took place in Miami in 1975 when I was 11, and on this, the 40th anniversary, I present to you the Hendler Family’s Madcap Thanksgiving Day. I was awakened by the strong odor of onion at 6:30 a.m. that morning thanks to my father making the only thing he ever cooked: two scrambled eggs with an entire onion mixed in. The scent of burnt onions so strong, I’m sure the Humperdink family next door could smell it. And had Mr. Humperdink actually smelled it, I’m sure he would have done what came naturally to him: call the police. It seemed the police were at Humperdink’s house at least once a week for some “crime” Humperdink witnessed: my friends and I playing ball in the street in front of his house; a neighbor mowing his yard too early in the morning; or someone’s underwear hanging to dry on the clothesline deemed too provocative. Anyway, awake at the crack of dawn, and holding my breath, I noticed an odd sound coming from my backyard. Looking out the window, I saw perhaps the largest bird I had ever seen stuck along the fence. My research later on would determine that this bird was an Anhinga for those ornithologists out there. As my dad and I were looking at the bird, Humperdink came out to see what we were up to and then upon seeing the bird, naturally called the police. The police were able to track down a wildlife specialist within an hour and the bird was rescued. Around 10 a.m., there was a knock at our front door and much to my and the family’s surprise, it was my Uncle Ernie, his wife Judy and their 8month-old son David. They decided on the spur of the moment to fly up from Jamaica to surprise us. We were, to say the least, but also happy to see them. My dad, however, had an agenda and a timetable and insisted that we could all catch up in the car because he had a rather “important” errand to run. When my mother said he should just go by himself, he said, “For one day a year we could do things together like a real family. And what better day than Thanksgiving?” So, we all loaded into the orange 1973 Chevy BelAir station wagon. My father had heard, through his network of Cuban cigar makers, irregular clothing salesmen and migrant farm workers that a store which sold machetes would be open for several hours on Thanksgiving. Apparently, my father had some tree branches he wanted to chop off in our yard. My father wasn’t sure exactly where the store was, only that it was on a certain road. So, we traveled the equivalent of driving from Marshall to Jackson only on back roads to find this machete store. Somehow, we found the store and got there just before they were about to close. Because it took us so long to find this store, we had to head straight to our friends’ house for the Thanksgiving meal, all of us still dressed in our “morning clothes.” The Khaleels, who had moved to Miami from Jamaica, were my parents’ best friends and they had two kids, a boy and a girl, the same age as my sister and me. I don’t remember much about the meal, but I do remember my father and Mr. Khaleel making a bet. My father bet $50 that Jimmy Carter would be elected president in 1976. “Who’s he?” Khaleel asked. “You’ll see soon enough,” my father said, having the confidence of a man who had some inside information. It was almost 11 p.m. when we returned home, poor Judy essentially holding her baby (no car seat) for the 13 hours since they arrived at our house. As we turned onto our dark street approaching home, our way was brilliantly illuminated by the blue and red strobes of the two police cars in Humperdink’s driveway. What memories. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

Responding to a request from Congress, President George Washington issued our nation’s first Thanksgiving proclamation in 1789. Only in the midst of the crucible of civil war, however, did presidential proclamations of Thanksgiving become customary. Every year since 1863, our chief executives have urged Americans to recognize God’s bounty and blessings on the fourth Thursday in November. Several themes loom large in presidential Thanksgiving proclamations: the historical foundation of the event; God’s sovereignty and goodness; the many blessings God has bestowed on America; the importance of national and individual repentance; a challenge to share our copious blessings with other nations and the less fortunate at home; a call to honor the sacrifices of those, especially members of the Armed Forces, who have helped make American prosperous and powerful; and an exhortation to express our gratitude to God individually and collectively. Numerous presidents have described America’s first Thanksgiving. Most have identified it as the feast the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians shared in Plymouth in 1621. Barack Obama, for example, declared in 2014 that “the friendship and kindness of the Wampanoag people” helped the Pilgrims learn “to harvest the rich bounty of a new world.” Some presidents, including John F. Kennedy, pointed to early 17th century events in both

Massachusetts and Virginia as providing the foundation for Thanksgiving. In 1984, Ronald Reagan, by contrast, highlighted Iroquois thanksgiving festivals that predated those of Euro-Americans as the basis of the holiday. Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and most other presidents have accentuated God’s power, providence, and generosity in their proclamations. Washington praised “the great Lord and Ruler of Nations,” acknowledged “the providence of Almighty God,” and thanked God for “His kind care and protection.” Lincoln emphasized “the everwatchful providence of Almighty God.” Woodrow Wilson rejoiced in 1918 that “God, the ruler of nations,” had brought an end to World War I. In their Thanksgiving statements, presidents also have consistently expressed gratitude to God for His countless blessings. Washington established the pattern by thanking “the beneficent author of all … good” for the successful conclusion of the Revolutionary War and the new nation’s “tranquility, union and plenty,” peaceful relations with other countries, recently adopted Constitution, and religious and civil liberty. In 1865 Andrew Johnson rejoiced that God had removed “the fearful scourge of civil war” and permitted Americans to enjoy “the blessings of peace, unity and harmony.” Harry Truman urged citizens in 1945 to thank “Almighty Providence” for America’s “abundance, strength and achievement” evident in its defeat of “German fascism

and Japanese militarism.” In 2003, George W. Bush praised God for America’s “abundance, prosperity, and hope” and its “firm foundation of freedom, justice and equality” and “belief in democracy and the rule of law.” In addition, presidents have called for corporate and individual repentance. Washington beseeched God “to pardon our national and other transgressions.” Lincoln urged Americans to bow before God in “humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience.” Andrew Johnson urged citizens to confess their “national sins” against God’s “infinite goodness.” Wilson exhorted Americans to seek “divine mercy and forgiveness for all [our] errors of act or purpose.” Presidents have also used their proclamations to ask God to bless other countries and to prod citizens to generously aid others. Washington beseeched God to “protect and guide” all nations and “to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord.” Kennedy implored Americans to share their blessings and ideals with people around the world. Reagan exhorted citizens to model God’s “compassion for those in need” by sharing “our bounty with those less fortunate.” George H. W. Bush urged Americans to aid the unemployed, homeless, hungry, sick and lonely. Obama challenged citizens to fulfill their roles as their “brother’s and … sister’s keepers” by working at homeless shelters and soup kitchens. In their proclamations, our chief executives have accentuated the sacrifices

many American have made to protect and strengthen our nation. Let us “rededicate ourselves to those high principles of citizenship,” Truman declared in 1945, “for which so many splendid Americans have recently given all.” “Throughout history,” George W. Bush asserted, “many have sacrificed to preserve our freedoms and to defend peace around the world.” Obama paid tribute “all those who defend our Union as members of our Armed Forces.” Finally, presidents have urged Americans to individually and collectively give thanks to God. Wilson counseled citizens “to render thanks to God” in their homes and places of worship Thanksgiving Day. George W. Bush encouraged “Americans to gather in their homes, places of worship and community centers” to pray and “reinforce ties of family and community.” As our presidents remind us, America has been abundantly blessed. Jesus declared that “to whom much is given, of him much shall be required” (Luke 12:48). May remembering this make us truly thankful and prompt us to aid the needy and vulnerable. Dr. Gary Scott Smith chairs the history department at Grove City College and is a fellow for faith and politics with The Center for Vision and Values. He is the author of “ Religion in the Oval Office,” (2015) “ Faith and the Presidency From George Washington to George W. Bush” (2009), “ Religion in the Oval Office” and “ Heaven in the American Imagination.”

Letters Saluting our troops for 50 years with mail campaign To the Editor: As we prepare for the upcoming Christmas mail campaign, Friends of Our Troops would like to extend special thanks to those who participated in the most recent campaign: Community of Christ in Battle Creek, led by Mrs. Darlene Freeburn, was one of the top churches in Michigan. The Young Explorers 4H Club in Marshall, led by Denise Noble, was the number one 4-H in the state. Mail is received from all across the nation, mixed thoroughly before being divided into hundreds of packages, both large and small, then sent to military

units across the U.S. and around the world. As the continuation of the Vietnam Mail Call project which was launched in 1965, this mail has been bringing smiles to our men and women in uniform for a half-century. While it is too late for participation in this year’s campaign, information regarding next year’s campaign will be available after Sept. 1, 2016, by sending your name and mailing address to Friends of Our Troops, P.O. Box 100, New Madrid, MO 63869. The troops will thank you, and so do we. Keith Boardman, Executive Director New Madrid, Mo.

“When I first saw my dad in the hospital, I was so scared. He wasn’t able to walk, talk or even feed himself. I knew immediately that we needed to transfer him to Bronson Methodist Hospital — even though he lived more than 200 miles away. I work with the Bronson Neuroscience team and I knew that his best chance of recovery would be here. Today, my dad can do everything that he did before. He’s building stuff. He’s driving. He is just full of life. I’m so proud of my dad for how he’s come through this. And I’m so thankful to Bronson for the care he received. hen the house is filled with the sweet smell of cinnamon, it’s a sure sign the holidays have arrived. This signature flavor of the season can add warmth and nostalgia to everything from traditional baked goods to vegetable sides and cocktails. “Everyone loves cinnamon in classic desserts like apple pie, but this spice is so versatile, it can be used in countless sweet and savory dishes,” said Chef Kevan Vetter of the McCormick Kitchens. “For the perfect seasonal side dish, you can toss carrots cooked in a slow cooker with a cinnamon-sugar glaze. Or, add cinnamon sticks to a festive drink, like holiday sangria.” Try these recipes to showcase that pure cinnamon flavor from cocktail hour to dessert. Slow Cooker Cinnamon Sugar Glazed Carrots

Finding the Best Cinnamon Before you stock up this holiday season, make sure you’re buying the highest quality cinnamon to bring pure flavor to your dishes. Look for clump-free ground cinnamon that’s a deep brown, mahogany color. It should have a warm aroma and taste with a little “red hot” cinnamon heat.

Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 3-4 hours Servings: 8 2 pounds baby carrots 2 tablespoons butter, melted 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons McCormick Ground Cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Ground Ginger 1/2 teaspoon salt Spray inside of 4-quart slow cooker with no stick cooking spray. Add carrots and melted butter; toss to coat. Cover. Cook on high 3 to 4 hours or until tender. Meanwhile, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger and salt in small bowl until well blended. Toss cooked carrots with brown sugar mixture in slow cooker just before serving. Tip: Keep cooked carrots in slow cooker when transporting to a party. Bring brown sugar mixture in small resealable plastic bag. For best results, toss carrots with brown sugar mixture just before serving.

Spiced Cranberry Sangria Prep time: 10 minutes Servings: 6 1 orange 16 McCormick Gourmet Whole Cloves 1 bottle (750 milliliters) sweet white wine, such as Moscato or Riesling 3 cups cranberry juice 1 cup fresh cranberries 1/4 cup orange-flavored liqueur, such as Grand Marnier 2 McCormick Gourmet Cinnamon Sticks 1 tablespoon McCormick Pure Vanilla Extract Cut orange into 8 wedges. Press 2 cloves into each wedge. Set aside. Mix wine, cranberry juice, cranberries, liqueur, cinnamon sticks and vanilla in large pitcher until well blended. Add orange wedges. Refrigerate 3 hours or until ready to serve. Serve in ice-filled glasses, if desired. Tip: If transporting Spiced Cranberry Sangria to a party, prepare recipe without adding the wine. Take the spiced cranberry juice in a clean, portable tightly covered beverage container leaving enough room for the wine. Then pour the bottle of wine into the container at the party. Serve and enjoy!
