Honoring all who served

Joe Caron, Kari Schurig win City Council seats A couple of new faces will be on the Marshall City Council in January, while a familiar face on the Council will move a few seats over to be Marshall’s new mayor. On Nov. 4, voters selected challenger Joe Caron over incumbent Ward 5 Councilwoman Jody Mankerian by a 1,139-802 margin while in the Ward 1 race, which saw two challengers vie for Jack Reed’s vacant seat, Kari Schurig was the winner, by a vote of 988 to 739 against Harry Marshall. Regional efforts look to improve education, college and career readiness Southwest Michigan First held an input meeting on Nov. 5 to discuss Gov. Rick Snyder’s Regional Prosperity Initiative and the 2012 Transformation Agenda for the Southwest Michigan. “When you put a list of solutions that we have to any problems in society or problems we have with our organizations, better education is always on that list,” said Chairman of SMF William U. Parfet. “We have a chance here like we’ve never had before to take these seven counties and fix them.” See story on page 22

Monarch Community Bank to merge with Chemical Financial Corporation The board of directors of Chemical Financial Corporation, holding company for Chemical Bank, and the board of directors of Monarch Community Bancorp, Inc., holding company for Monarch Community Bank, announced last week that they have signed a definitive agreement for Monarch Community Bancorp, Inc. to merge with and into Chemical Financial Corporation in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $26 million, based on Chemical's closing stock price on Oct. 31. Monarch shareholders will receive 0.0982 shares of Chemical common stock for each share of Monarch common stock. See story on page 47

New partnership boosts Starr Commonwealth’s Albion Campus A new partnership between Starr Commonwealth and a national human service agency aims to boost the number of children being served on Starr’s Albion campus as part of a growth plan designed to launch the organization into its second century. The agreement means that Sequel Youth and Family Services will manage the publicly-funded residential services on Starr’s Albion campus, with Sequel utilizing its national network of human service clients to ensure that more children can benefit from Starr’s historic and therapeutic campus. Mar Lee School gets new track The idea for a track at Mar Lee School has always been on the school’s wish list, but the efforts of the Mar Lee Athletic Boosters and local businesses and citizens over the past few months has brought that dream to fruition. In late October, the first phase of the track was completed: a 200-meter, four lane, asphalt track. “What the kids were playing on and running on was literally a dirt path,” said Cheryl Zick, who has led the effort of the Athletic Boosters. “Since the track has been built, the students are so excited. One day, I was at the school and there were about 40 kids outside during recess and all the kids were walking around the track. It was so great. They think that this is such a big deal. It is a big deal.” See story on page 45

ast year, VFW member Phil Wuori placed the Post 4073 wreath at the Veterans Memorial Wall, signifying respect for those who died in service for our country. This year, VFW members, American Legion members, local veterans and community members will gather on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Fountain Circle to remember and honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Word on the Street Why is it important to honor our veterans? Editor’s Corner

On Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. thousands across the nation will celebrate Veteran’s Day, including those in Marshall. On Tuesday, a Veteran’s Day ceremony will be held at the Veterans Memorial, across from Brooks Memorial Fountain.

by John Hendler Only days following the midterm elections and still two months away before the new Congress and state legislatures begin, it’s now time to hurry up and wait. By virtue of their big night on Election Day, it’s the Republicans turn to be on the clock. In the “What have you done for me (or to me) lately?” department, voters across Michigan and the nation sent a “message” to Democrats (and President Obama) by giving Republicans even greater control of the House of Representatives and control of the Senate for the first time since 2006. In Michigan, Republicans in the State House also grew their majority. In wielding their influence and shifting the balance of power somewhat, voters also sent a warning of sorts to the victorious Republicans on Tuesday: You’re next. How quickly the pendulum swings these days. Six years ago, after Barack Obama was elected president, I wrote that since he (and the Democrats) would be inheriting all the problems left behind by W, they would be “guilty by association” if things didn’t turn around quickly enough for voters. (Little did I know at the time that the president would, time and again, bring up all that he inherited from his predecessor as a defense to his being guilty by association.) To the same extent, unless things drastically change, two years from now, the revolving door in Washington and Lansing could once again be on auto pilot. Hey, what goes around comes around, right? If the Republicans can back up their talk with action (now that we might actually see a U.S. Senate that can deliberate bills passed by the House), I think the next two years could be good to Republicans and the President alike, if they actually work together. It seems that our “wait and see” threshold has shrunk in direct correlation to the speeding up of our society, where things can’t change or happen quickly enough. But, if we have more of the same, all bets are off. These days, and at times justifiably so, voters feel that they can’t afford to wait even two months, let alone two years to “wait and see” what happens. (Especially for those who are barely making ends meet.) Our fickle and impatient nature reminds me of a blind date I went on a while back, a story I’ve shared in the past. We met for dinner; the conversation, mostly small talk was nothing to write home about as we waited for our food. During those 10 minutes or so, my date apparently had “waited and seen” enough to know that I was not going to get her “vote.” And so, when the waiter arrived with our food, she got up from her chair, told him she’d like her food “to go,” and then looked at me and said, “I gotta go.” Thanks for dinner.” All in one fell swoop. So, Republicans and Democrats, alike, figure out a way to work together and get things done or you might be the next “to go.” Until next week, may the good news be yours.

"Veterans are why we have the peace we have. They decided to fight and die for us. The least we can do is honor them.”

"My grandfather was a veteran. He sacrificed going to Vietnam. If he can go through that, he can go through anything. Veterans deserve the honor.”

"It’s important to recognize their commitment and sacrifice. Less than one percent of the population choose to follow that path.”

Bryan Cottrill, Columbus, Ohio

Heather May, Columbus, Ohio

Jim Dorosh, Marshall

"Because they served our country to let us be free and have the freedoms to do what we are doing right now.”

"They put their lives on the line for our freedom. We need more celebration and times of recognition to honor them.”

"It’s important to recognize their ultimate sacrifice. Those are husbands, wives, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters that were left behind for the freedoms we have today. Those freedoms were earned. We shouldn’t take that for granted.”

Letters

Joe Caron looks forward to serving on City Council

To the Editor: I would like to thank the nearly 2,000 Marshall residents who voted in Tuesday’s election. One of the most important freedoms we enjoy as citizens is the right to vote. We debate issues, assess and articulate candidates’ vision, positions and qualifications and then express our opinion peacefully via the ballot box. I am

grateful for the trust placed in me by the voters, and I look forward to serving. On a personal note, I want to thank the people who voted for me and who supported our campaign. No one wins an election on his own. It takes grass roots supporters and a team effort. I am very grateful to all who helped make this election possible.

Please also join me in recognizing and honoring my opponent, Jody Mankerian’s service to our community. During her time on the council, she has been an advocate for Marshall, and I look forward to working with her and other leaders in our community—including our new mayor and the council—to find solutions for public problems

and to help move our hometown forward in positive ways. I look forward to bringing energy and new perspectives to the Council in my role as the representative for Ward 5. Thank you again for placing your trust in me. And thank you for the opportunity to serve. Joe Caron, Marshall

Kari Schurig thanks Marshall community for support To the Editor: I would like to express my thankfulness to the citizens of Marshall for the confidence they have shown in me by electing me to City Council. I have been blessed to have so many supporters and am beyond grateful for this new opportunity. I also want to congratulate Jack Reed as our new mayor, and Joe Caron as another newly

elected councilman, as well as thank Harry Marshall and Jody Mankerian for the honorable campaigns they ran. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you’, declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” I am excited to see the possibilities that God has, not only for myself and my family through this, but

for the families of Marshall. I will do my best to help Marshall move forward in growth without losing its family friendly, welcoming, inviting charm. Once again, thank you all for your support, and I look forward to building a future together. Kari Schurig, Marshall

Mother/Son Dance a new tradition at Albion Rec To the Editor: The Albion Recreation Department would like to extend a warm thank you to everyone that was involved with the Mother/Son Dance. The department is excited to add this event as one of the great traditions in the Albion Recreation Department. The dance attracted a total of 62 dates and by all accounts viewed as a total success. Additionally, some families brought more than one kid. To put that number in perspective, in the

spring the Daddy Daughter Dance brought in 43 dates. The Albion Recreation Department would like to thank Leewayne Embry for providing outstanding upbeat music that we could all move to; Dennis Reid for his amazing caricature drawings; Albion Community Schools for the space; Joan Eagan for the photography and quick turn around on her services; Hungry Howie’s for supplying the great food; Parks Drug Store and Dr. Deloris Smiley for providing gifts for

the free rafflings; and Tamara Lane for leading the staff and volunteers surrounding the event. We look forward to the citizens of Albion and the surrounding communities continued support of the department. If you would like to find more information on upcoming events such as Youth Basketball starting Nov. 15 visit Albion.recdesk.com. Taurean Wilson, Director of Recreation, Albion

The Olivet High School varsity football game won its Div. 5 first round playoff game Nov. 1 at home versus Stockbridge, 33-32 in a game that saw both teams score two touchdowns each in the final four minutes. Above, Chase Martin breaks away from the Stockbridge defense en route to a 50-yard TD that would put Olivet ahead 33-26 with 1:19 to play. Stockbridge would score with 18 seconds left to make it 33-32 but then missed the two-point conversion. Martin also had a 57-yard TD run with 3:20 to play that broke a 20-20 tie. Olivet played at Lansing Catholic Friday night for the district title.

MHS volleyball advances to district final vs. HC

Players on the Marshall bench show their elation following the varsity volleyball team winning the second set versus Pennfield in the district tournament semi final Nov. 5 in Comstock. Above right is Lindsay Gardner. Marshall won in straight sets, 25-13, 26-24 and 26-24. Marshall faced Harper Creek in the final Thursday night which occurred after the ad-visor&chronicle went to press. Against Pennfield, Marshall was led by Logan Kiessling’s 14 kills and nine digs. Nicole Tucker had seven blocks and six kills. Kaylie Bates had 27 assists and seven digs and Brooke Mason had 15 digs. "Tonight was a struggle for us,” said coach John Miller following the match. “I think we came out too amped up and our adrenaline started going away by the second set. Pennfield is a good team and we know how bad they wanted to beat us tonight. We had just enough to get past them. They just kept coming and coming. We know that we are going to have to play much better if we want a chance to beat Harper Creek."
