WE’RE COMING TO TOWN

Tom Sharpley is Christmas Parade Grand Marshall When Tom Sharpley moved to Marshall in the late 1980s, he decided to become a Chamber of Commerce ambassador to introduce himself on a business and personal level. “The Chamber announced that they would like to see more people to serve on the Christmas committee," said Sharpley. "I did and a year later, somewhere along the line - I didn't read that in the job description but now I was the parade chairperson." Twenty five years later, Sharpley is still the Christmas Parade chairperson and this year, for the first time, will serve as Grand Marshal Dec 1. Marshall Christmas Parade. See story on page 31

Peters family receives surprise gift for their son Simon On Nov. 25, Marshall native John Wuori delivered a 2014 MV-1 LX Shuttle mini-van to the Peters family of Marshall, after his company and its employees at Fabric Services of Bristol, Ind. raised the money with a “Give Simon a Lift” campaign. On Tuesday, when Wuori and the vehicle dealer pulled up, the Peters thought Wuori had come to give them a monetary donation, but instead he had a much larger gift in mind. See story on page 34

Retail Open House returns next Friday The first Friday in December has come to be a special evening for hundreds of visitors who save from 6 to 9 p.m. when they attend the downtown Marshall Retail Open House. See story on page 43

Olivet High School fields first bowling team At 6 p.m. on a Sunday night, it looked like Susan and Dana Higgins might be at Char Lanes on a family bowling outing with their sons Daniel, 15, and Andrew, 14, but it was hard to account for the handful of other teens who had gathered with them at the Charlotte bowling facility. Birthday bash? No cake or ice cream, just a review of bowling principles, completion of paperwork and informal bowling as part of the third official practice for members of Olivet High School’s first bowling team, organized by the Higgins family. Word on the Street What are you thankful for? Editor’s Corner by John Hendler One of my favorite movies is the The Paper, the 1994 film about a New York newspaper starring Michael Keaton. One of my favorite lines in the film comes from Robert Duvall, who plays Bernie, the editor of the paper. Lamenting the looming deadline to get the lead story right, Bernie says something we in the newspaper business know all too well. “I’ve been doing this for 35 years; every day you still start from zero.” The same holds true for a weekly paper like the ad-visor&chronicle: You can only relax so long, because once the issue is completed, it’s on to the next one, starting from zero. For nearly 46 years or 2,400 weeks, John Jacobs started from zero and pieced together every page of the Marshall Advisor and subsequently the ad-visor&chronicle. This issue is his last, and finally, he can get off the journalistic hamster wheel and finally slow down. “It seemed like I was always on deadline and that just made the time fly, and that’s a bad thing,” said Jacobs about the race against the clock. “It was always on to next week’s paper.” In all those weeks, there was just one week that the paper didn’t get delivered. That was 1977, following an historic snowfall that paralyzed the region for several days. Other than that one hiccup, the show has gone on to the tune of some 43 million issues delivered to area households. “When it’s put that way, it makes me feel old,” said Jacobs. His was truly a labor of love and the sounds and smells of the newspaper business are as fresh in his mind as they were nearly a half century ago. “I can still smell the film and the chemicals as well as the smell of the press from the start,” said Jacobs. “And I can still hear those certain sounds of the press repeated over and over, hour after hour. Those are good sounds.” I know I speak for those on our staff and those in the community that got to know John Jacobs that we will miss his “good sounds” that he brought to us each week. All the best to you John Jacobs, and for the many weeks and years ahead, may the good news be yours.

Thanksgiving is normally a time when people reflect on the things that really matter in their lives. Thanksgiving traditionally marks the beginning of the holiday season. This year, what are you thankful for?

Megan Harvey, Marshall

Julie Rhoades, Olivet

Barb Czeiszperger Osborn, Marshall

"I am thankful for my family and good health. Just coming from the funeral for Kay Mead, I am thankful for living in a small town that truly cares for one another and pulls together.”

"I'm thankful for family, friends, my own home and a dependable vehicle to get me to and from work each day.”

"I am thankful we have a WIC program to feed infants that need good nutrition desperatley, but saddened that using it enables people to find ways to use the card to buy a bottle of Jose Cuervo.”

Amy Mccullough Kellogg, Marshall

Natalie Dean, Marshall

Jenn Lawrence, Jackson

"Health, family, friends, love, laughter...It’s that simple.”

"I'm thankful that with the weather we’ve been having that I only have to drive two blocks to get to work.”

"I am thankful that I beat cancer!”

Letters Now is the time for change; stop President Obama To the Editor: Why do we have three branches of our U.S. Government? To provide a balance of power. So Congress needs to do

their job and stop President Obama from breaking the laws of this land! The news media can help by reporting the real news, instead of giving Obama a

pass. Obama is a known master liar and can do it with a straight face. Obama was elected by the stupid and in fact, Obama’s party has made fun of this. Now

is the time for change. Allan Hayward, Eckford Twp.

Columns Law that helps people...Bankruptcy By GEORGE M. STRANDER Ingram County Court Administrator and Probate Register

Second in a series. In the first article of this series we introduced the legal concept of bankruptcy – structured forgiveness of some or all debts due to one’s inability to pay – and gave a short history of its use. In this article, we will talk a little bit about the origin of the term itself. Ba n k s: Banks did not always conduct their financial business in buildings (or online) as they do today. In medieval Italy, for instance, bankers – or money-lenders, as they were known – set up shop in publicly accessible places to conduct their business. In lending funds and otherwise documenting transactions, money-lenders used benches or tables. The term for “bench” or “table” in Italian is banca , and from this we get our word “bank.”

Ba n k r u p t : The core of the concept of bankruptcy is that someone is unable to meet one’s financial obligations. For a money-lender, this can happen if one enters into loan arrangements with some, even though one does not have the cash at that time, expecting prior loans to be repaid by others in time to meet the new obligations. When the repayments are not forthcoming in a timely manner, problems ensue. In medieval Italy, if a money-lender became insolvent in this way his bench was broken, symbolizing that he could no longer conduct such business. The term for “broken” in Italian derived from the Latin rupta , and hence “broken bench,” which signified going “broke,” became in our parlance “bankrupt.” The terms “bankrupt” and “insolvent” originally were not used as synonyms but rather were employed to apply to different categories of people with financial debts. “Bankrupt” was only applied to traders and moneylenders – i.e., professional financial workers. “Insolvent,” though, was ap-

plied to anyone else who could not pay his or her debts. Now, of course, the terms are largely used interchangeably. Interestingly, “insolvent” means “not able to solve,” where the Latin verb solvere stood for “to loosen or untie.” Hence, to solve a problem is to loosen or untie it (like a knot), and to solve one’s debts is to loosen or untie them (so you are no longer bound by them).

Medieval Italian banking conducted by money-lenders using tables set up in public spots. (From “Money talks,” Anna Belfrage, Dec. 28, 2013, on the English Historical Fiction Authors website.)

Finally back in the game. As an athlete and referee, playing through the pain is something Eric was used to. After all, he’d had back pain most of his life. When he was just under two years old, Eric fell from the second story of his home and remarkably survived without injury — or so he thought. After years of back pain, Eric sought help through minimally invasive spine surgery at Oaklawn to alleviate his painful symptoms. “The surgery did exactly what they pledged it would do, and the excruciating pain I had felt from the scoliosis was gone immediately after surgery.” Within a few weeks, Eric was back on the court, and back to life, pain free.
