Exchange student Aiganysh Nazarova talks about life in Marshall and Kyrgyzstan When Aiganysh Nazarova learned she was coming to the United States and specifically to the Marshall/Albion area as a foreign exchange student, she really wasn’t sure what to expect. She figured that things would be different for sure, but to what extent, she couldn’t imagine. “I pictured things to be very simple, but when I arrived, I felt like I was in a movie,” said Nazarova, who is from Kyrgyzstan and is attending Marshall High School for her final year of high school. “I was so excited to go to school; I couldn’t wait.” See story on page 38

“If there is righteousness in the heart, There will be beauty in the character. If there is beauty in the character, There will be love in the home. If there is love in the home, There will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, There will be peace in the world.”

The message of the holidays is one of peace and good will. Together we pray, “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.”

Word on the Street

What’s your favorite Christmas memory? Editor’s Corner by John Hendler When I was a young boy, my father would tell me every so often: “If it weren’t for Fidel Castro, you wouldn’t have been born.” As a 5 or 6-year-old, I had no idea what he was talking about or who the heck Fidel Castro was, but one thing was for sure, I was happy to be alive. After hearing last Wednesday that the United States was going to restore full relations with Cuba, the first thing I thought of was my father and his line about Castro. My father was born near the border on the Russian border with Poland in 1921. Shortly after the Germans invaded Poland in September 1939, he was arrested by the Russians for being a Polish “spy” and was sentenced to seven years in a Siberian labor camp. After the Germans tried to invade Russia, my father was ordered to fight with the Red Army and survived the war suffering only a couple of shrapnel wounds in his hand and leg. Following the war, he moved to France and then set his sights on coming to the United States. But, he was unable to get in and had to settle on emigrating to Cuba instead. One of the first things he did after arriving in Cuba was to contact the American Embassy to start his path to residency and citizenship. He was told that they would get back to him. My father settled into the Cuban lifestyle, opened a business for himself and moved several times over the next few years as he moved up the economic ladder. After about a dozen years after my father arrived in Cuba, Fidel Castro assumed power. While he was still able to do so, my father made a couple trips to the United States on a tourist visa in the first year of the Castro regime to open a bank account in New York, knowing that he had to leave Cuba. He went back to the American Embassy only to learn that his number came up years ago, but because he had moved several times, they couldn’t contact him. Thus, he had to go to the back of the line. After the Untied States cut ties with Cuba in 1961, things went from bad to worse under Castro. My father was subjected to the same intimidation tactics by the Communists that he had experienced in Russia and he knew his time to get off the island was running out. In July 1962, he was able to obtain a tourist visa to Jamaica, knowing full well he was leaving Cuba for good. I’m not sure how he did it, but after arriving in Jamaica, he applied for political asylum at the American Embassy and met my mother, all within two weeks of arriving. By late October they were married, and days later were living in Miami. My father told me that after he established himself in Cuba in the 1950s, he figured the sun and sand of Havana was too good to leave behind and figured there were worse places to live, especially after having survived those brutal Siberian winters. So, as Paul Harvey used to say, “Now you know the rest of the story.” I wish you all a joyous Christmas and holiday season and until next week, may the good news be yours.

Correction: In the Dec. 13 issue of the ad-visor&chronicle, we made an inadvertent typing omission in Joyce Warner’s letter. The letter should have also thanked Marshall House Apartment receptionist Crystal Lane.

Early Deadlines: Due to the earlier holiday press times, the deadlines for press releases and Letters to the Editor will be Monday, Dec. 22 & 29 at 2 p.m.

"My favorite Christmas memory was when my son Drake was 7 months old and right around Christmas he took his first steps. (Drake is now 6).”

"Gathering with my siblings, their children, my son, my parents and my aunts on Christmas Eve at my sister’s 30 years ago, a tradition we still do today.”

"My favorite Christmas memory is opening pajamas on Christmas Eve.”

Letters Fewer polarizing opinion pieces would be welcomed To the Editor: After reading John Hendler’s latest diatribe indicting (yet again) the current administration for its handling of various events, why do I get the sense that if even a local bake sale wasn’t a success it somehow would end up being President Obama’s fault?

The ad-visor&chronicle editorial from Dec. 12 invokes the journalistic principles of ‘balance’ and ‘honesty,’ and yet I find your weekly editorials far from moderate. The president might have a penchant for such rhetorical phrases as ‘that’s not who we are as Americans,’ but it seems

petty to fault him for trying to invoke, as Lincoln famously said, ‘the better angels of our nature’ when it comes to helping the poor, protecting the environment or torturing suspected terrorists. I’d welcome fewer polarizing opinion pieces, along with a more balanced ap-

proach to exploring such complex and nuanced issues. Except now that I think about it, perhaps ‘that’s not who we are as Americans.’ Matthew Samra, Marshall

Don’t use ‘Xmas’ to cross Christ out of Christmas To the Editor: During the Christmas season in 1959, I was a 10 year old riding in the back seat of my parent’s car. I will never forget that Christmas. As we were driving through the busy streets of Columbus, Ohio, I suddenly spotted a big advertising billboard that simply read in giant letters: “MERRY XMAS.” In much smaller letters underneath it read, “Don’t cross Christ out of CHRISTmas.” The change in me caused by that one moment was profound. I asked my parents and pastor many questions about the use of “Xmas,” but there always

seemed to only be one answer: “Oh, it’s just an abbreviation.” A Catholic priest did explain that the Greek alphabet the letter “X” is “Chi” and stands for the first letter in Christ. That does somewhat explain things, but I also believe that most people are no so familiar with the Greek alphabet. When most people see an “X,” it simply means something is crossed out. I have become more convinced over the years that it is the evil in our world that wants to shift everyone’s focus from the true meaning of Christmas to what it has become for

many people and sadly enough, for many Christians. Satan is quite clever and subtle. Even at the age of 10, I became aware that this wonderful holiday was becoming bright lights, tacky Santas at the mall and a highly pitched advertising campaign by every store on the planet to make us all feel somewhat inadequate if we didn’t buy a lavish gift for everyone we ever knew or met. Over the years, I have done my small part. Christmas cards were signed, “Merry Christmas.” I told my two children my Christmas story and signs

of “Merry Xmas” always had “Don’t cross Christ out of Christmas” added to them. On holiday season, I drove by a lot that advertised they were selling “Xmas” tree. I drove into the lot and told the man my Christmas story and explained that I only buy Christmas trees. The following year the sign was changed. I drove into the lot and the man greeted me with a big smile. He remembered me, and I bought one of his CHRISTmas trees. Chuck Starkey, Marshall

Columns Americans ponder - when is torture justified? By FRED JACOBS J-Ad Graphics CEO If you watched TV over the weekend, you may have noticed that most news shows’ discussion centered on the Senate Intelligence Committee’s bombshell report on the CIA’s interrogation program. The report dealt with the torture used on terrorists in United States custody following the Sept. 11 attacks and others being planned and whether that torture was justified. According to the Senate committee’s report, these terrorists were subjected to what the CIA called “enhanced interrogation techniques,” which included water-boarding, rectal feeding, prolonged sleep deprivation and being shackled in stressed positions for days at

a time. I understand and have personally accepted the premise that the United States government didn’t support these types of torture techniques. Many of the interrogation tactics and captivity protocols that our military leaders avoided in the past are acknowledged worldwide in treaties that have been in place for years, such as the Geneva Convention. However, when government officials felt compelled to make public the sensitive documents outlining the CIA tactics used to gain information from these terrorists following the worst attack ever on America, controversy erupted. Most Americans don’t even understand these interrogation tactics nor can they relate to the extreme pressure of that time to determine if future threats to our

country were in the making. Releasing the report now carries implications of problems in our intelligence community for years. Has partisan politics become so bad that today’s politicians now question the decisions of former officials in the wake of the worst attack ever perpetrated on our nation? Has intelligent discourse deteriorated so much that, today, more than 10 years later, we question the judgment of officials whose sole purpose with known terrorists was to safeguard the country from another attack? What would these political hacks say to the husbands and wives, sons and daughters who lost their lives after the World Trade Center was hit by two airplanes piloted by a band of terrorists committed to do harm to our na-

tion? And how about the passengers on United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania, short of its alleged target, the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Would the 38 passengers, five flight attendants, and two pilots who were hijacked worry about the tactics used on terrorists if they could avert another national tragedy? I don’t think so. Even the Pentagon, the administrative command center of the U.S. Military complex, became a target for these radical maniacs who commandeered American Airlines Flight 77 with 64 people on board and hit the largest office building in the world, killing another 125.
