Lowell’s Farmers’ Market bigger and better this year The Lowell Area Farmers’ Market is one of the better farmers’ markets in West Michigan. After a few changes, it’s going to be even bigger and better in 2015.
“The farmers’ market GHÂżQLWHO\ LV FKDQJLQJ ´ VDLG Liz Baker, executive director of the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce. “There will be a nice ambiance to it this year.â€?
During summer the Lowell Area Farmers’ Market will be open from noon until 5:30 pm every Thursday through September 24. These new, expanded hours make the market accessible to people who work during the day. At the Lowell Area Farmers’ Market \RXÂśOO ÂżQG SURGXFWV like fresh fruit, Ă€RZHUV KRQH\ EDNHG goods, and arts and crafts. “We are excited this year because we already have interest from vendors that we couldn’t attract before,â€? Baker said. “For instance, John Sterly is going to come with his DIVCO milk truck and do ice cream and Heffron Farms is going to join us this year.â€? The expanded hours are just one of
the changes to the farmers’ market this year. It will also be in a new location. “For almost three years it was held uptown in the Tractor Supply Co. parking lot, Baker said. “We heard constantly from people that it wasn’t a really great location and they’ve always wanted to see a farmers’ market in downtown Lowell. The move downtown allows the Lowell Area Farmers’ Market to change and expand what it offers. “We looked around at the parking lots and we ended up choosing the parking lot behind city hall, at the corner of Monroe and Avery, Baker said. “We’re also going to have picnic tables out there. The Lowell Area Farmers’ Market is open regardless of weather. For more information contact Dave and Betty Deans at 616-8979186.

Otis Sanctuary rare birds and a quiet retreat The Michigan Audubon Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary is a mix of wetlands, restored woodland and prairies bordering the Barry State Game Area. A maintained 1.4-mile loop trail and a wetland boardwalk to Glass Creek make wildlife viewing easy and enjoyable. The sanctuary, at 3560 Havens Road, Hastings, is home to more than 160 species of birds, said resident manager Tom Funke. The wetlands house birds such as soras, rails, bitterns, as well as beavers and otters. Visitors can enjoy a walk amid ZLOGĂ€RZHUV LQ WKH UHVWRUHG SUDLULH and see meadowlarks and perhaps
even the endangered Henslow’s sparrow. In the woods and savanna, visitors can view wood thrushes, ovenbirds and possibly box turtles. The biggest event of the year at the sanctuary is the Cerulean Warbler Weekend June 5 to 7. Noted as the best time and place to best see cerulean warblers, the sanctuary offers workshops, birding trips and outdoor activities, such as hiking and kayaking. Event information can be found at ceruleanwarbler.org. Naturalist-led walks at the sanctuary begin at 9 a.m. the third Saturday of the month through October.
Funke is available for guided tours and programs. The sanctuary is open from dawn to dusk, 365 days per year with free parking and free admission. Canoes are available for rent with advance notice. On most weekends, the restored Sears and Roebuck barn is open to explore. For more information or to arrange a guided program, visit www.michiganaudubon.org or email otis@michiganaudubon.org.

Lowell’s Riverwalk festival
July 9, 10 & 11, 2015
The highlight of summer in Lowell is always Riverwalk Festival, the two-night, threeday party the chamber of commerce throws downtown the second weekend in July. This year’s Riverwalk Festival will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 9, 10 and 11. “The businesses on Main St. and the food establishments do very well during Riverwalk, said Liz Baker, Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce executive director. “We like people to patronize our businesses. If you just want to come and eat, there are lots of different things to eat. If you’re just here to listen to entertainment you can do that as well. Kids can go play in the Kid Zone and there’s

always lots of fun games for them to play. The Riverwalk Festival will start Thursday, July 9, with live music by a country rock band from Kalamazoo. “We are going to kick our festival off on Thursday night with a Sizzlin’ Summer Concert, Last year’s pig roast was such a huge success they ran out of pork. “Thursday night we do the
pig roast,â€? Baker said. “When the festival started many, many years ago a pig roast was a big part of it. We brought it back last year and it was a hit. It was really good. Trolley brings rides and smiles The smiles on the faces of riders is what Barry County Transit’s Bill Voigt likes most about the system’s trolley. “There’s just a festive feel to the trolley,â€? said the manager and transportation coordinator for the county’s public transit system. “It’s pure fun and a great way for people just to get together and do things together. Every year, it seems to become even more popular at the events we do.â€? The iconic vehicle will be a common sight again this summer, especially in Middleville Wednesdays and in Hastings Fridays when ridership is free, thanks to underwriters enthused about creating fun in the community. The free trolley ride summer has been expanded to 12 weeks beginning in June. In Middleville, the trolley will make its rounds between 6 and 9 p.m. every Wednesday and will make 11 stops. In Hastings, 12 designated stops will comprise a circuit that will run from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The trolley will also be a highlight of Middleville’s Memorial Day parade and the Summerfest parade and festivities as summer ends in Hastings. Last year, the trolley was a part of the new harvest festival event in Yankee Springs, and, Voigt reports, the trolley will be back and even expanding its participation. %DFN DW KLV RIÂżFH 9RLJW DOVR LV getting excited for a summer in which a new computer mapping program will provide residents greater access to transit services. “We’ve been able to start reorganizing our routes,â€? said Voigt, “and that’s going to lend itself very nicely to helping our residents take advantage of more leisure and entertainment and the many things our county has to offer.â€? This year, however, the historic venue will have even more to offer, beginning with a special paleontology exhibit, followed by display of artifacts owned by local soldiers who fought in the Civil War, and then a traveling exhibit on Abraham Lincoln and the U.S. Constitution. PaleoJoe returned in the spring with a special exhibit, Fossils of the Michigan Basin, which is on display in the Irving D. Charlton Memorial Museum through June 26. Freeport Homecoming The revving of Detroit iron and the polish of Motown chrome will return to the Freeport Homecoming this year as one of the many highlights of the annual celebration Friday and Saturday, Aug. 7 and 8. “We haven’t had a car show for the last couple of years,” said organizer Sean McMahon, “but the last year we had one, we had 65 or 70 cars.” McMahon said he expects homecoming numbers will
soar with hot cars again lining the streets of the village, which offers an ideal setting for evoking memories of vintage America. Connected with the car show will be another interesting innovation, prize-winning plaques to be uniquely manufactured by the Cheesebrough Wooden Rake Factory. “They acquired space as a temporary home and are still servicing golf courses all over the world,” said McMahon of the company’s progress since
D GHYDVWDWLQJ ¿UH LQ “They are manufacturing little mini-plaques with a logo to present to car show winners, which will make for a unique trophy.” In addition, this year’s festival will bring back signature events, such as bale rolling, and also will mix in some favorites, such as music from all-new bands and hula hoop and limbo competitions.
