ozens of teams and individuals will gather at Fish Hatchery Park in Hastings Saturday, May 4, with the goal of raising $21,000 to help premature babies through the March of Dimes. The walking event, March for Babies, is a national fundraiser with a local flavor. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a four-mile walk starting at 9 a.m. in Fish Hatchery, traveling through downtown Hastings and back to the park. Brittany Wescott (center) along with daughter Olive (left) and son Jonah are part of the 2013 Barry County March of Dimes Ambassador Family, along with their dad, Jason Goggins. The ambassador family has been helping with fundraising over the past few months and will be walking at the head of the march. For more on the story, look inside.

1.The 10th annual Thornapple Jazz Festival will conclude today (Saturday) with free concerts by High School Jazz Bands and Adult/College Ensembles at various venues in Downtown Hastings throughout the day. The “Festival Finale Concert” will feature the Middle School All Star Band, the High School All Star Band and the “Holland Jazz Orchestra” under the direction of Brian Coyle, the Director of Jazz Studies at Hope College. Doors open at 6 p.m., the concert begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10, or play us a jazzy little tune from the South Jefferson Street Jazz Stage (the soapbox) today (Saturday) and we will buy you a ticket to the concert. You can enjoy Jazz with Dinner at the Seasonal Grill with Mark Lutley/Mark Kahny (4:30-6:30 p.m.), at the Fall Creek Restaurant Kyle Wellfare Group (4:30-6:30 p.m.), at the Walldorff Bistro with the Benje Daneman Group (4-6 p.m.) and at the County Seat enjoy Big Willy (7-11 p.m.) 2. The 126th annual Hastings High School Alumni Banquet will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2013. Anyone who attended Hastings High School and their guests are invited to the banquet. There will be “tours” of the old high school and the Community Education and Recreation Center during the day, a punch bowl happy hour starts at 4:30 p.m. followed by the banquet and program beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The Cemetery Action Group will hold a Community Forum discussing the upcoming special election for a one mill levy allowing Riverside Cemetery to become a municipal cemetery owned and operated by the City of Hastings at 7 p.m., this Thursday, April 18 at the Barry County Commission on Aging, West Woodlawn Ave., in Hastings. All who are interested are welcome to attend and express your opinion. 4. The Pierce cedar Creek Institute will sponsor a program on “Natural Beauty and Body Care” all about using kitchen ingredients and herbs to create all-natural body care products from scratch, three of which each participate will be able to take home. The program is this Wednesday (April 17) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the institute. Cost is $15 for members, $20 for non-members. Next Saturday the institute will teach you how to “Build a Birdhouse,” suitable for small cavity nesting birds such as bluebirds, wrens, chickadees etc., during a workshop from 10-11:30 a.m. Cost is $15 for members, $20 for non-members. Hastings City Bank, the official bank of South Jefferson Street, will present a free workshop “The New Financial World for Young Adults” this Tuesday, April 16 from 6 until 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the bank’s main office at the corner of Jefferson and Court streets in downtown Hastings. The workshop will feature topics of interest to young adults including checking accounts, mobile banking, online banking, safe ATM practices, credit cards and more. There will be time for questions. Dinner is from 5-7 p.m. ($5 per person), the concert is from 7-9 p.m. (free will offering), followed by the Silent Auction. 12. The Hastings Cinema 4 Theater “Free Spring Movies” selection for this week on Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. each day is “The Pirates,” next weekend the feature is “ParaNorman,” same days and times. Each feature has a 15 minute intermission to make it suitable for kids. Admission to the feature is free to all. The concession stand will have a Classic Kids Combo ($3.50), a Healthy Kids Combo ($4.50) and other concession items for sale. 13.
