Baby Carriers When you become a parent, there are so many things to consider, and so many new things to research, test and figure out. One of the things that I never really considered with my first baby was a baby carrier. I thought I was all set. After all, I had my arms and a hip. But after a few weeks of constantly carrying my newborn, bouncing her to sleep, pacing the hallways, rocking some more, bouncing some more and not accomplishing much, I started to think differently. I completely loved holding my baby. I didn’t want to give up the precious moments of the day spent smelling her head, letting her hear my heartbeat, sharing warmth, and providing comfort through my touch. Unfortunately, laundry doesn’t fold itself, the floor doesn’t sweep itself, and eventually every mother’s arms, quite frankly, do get tired! That’s why baby carriers are truly lifesavers. Put on the baby carrier and enjoy the ride, baby. Here are just a few reasons why my kids and I love carriers.

We get to be close. This means involuntarily kissing my baby on her head all day long. Little words whispered in her ear about what she is seeing or what we are doing provide a high top view of the world that is fully engaging as I am talking, touching, and being in the world with her. Nursing in the carrier is also a personal favorite. Carriers are also great for Dads. Mom gets a break and Dad gets a change to bond with the baby.

I get to do things. It is a great pleasure to be able to do things with two hands. There are some activities that are not safe to do when using a carrier, but most things are.

Baby sleep is easy. My natural walking is the same motion to which she became accustomed while in the womb. The gentle bounce of my step seems to rock her to sleep every time, without any effort from me.

Crowds are easier without a stroller to maneuver, fold, store, or keep track of. Strangers are less likely to reach out to touch my baby when she is in the carrier.
I recently took my youngest baby to Colorado in the Onya baby carrier. It worked well during airport security checks, baby naptime on the plane and hiking the mountain trails.
Carriers grow with your baby. Toddlers seem to enjoy the view from back carriers, which are also perfect for hiking and other outdoor activities.

Not all baby carriers are created equal. You and your baby will both be happiest when you find a carrier that provides comfort for both the wearer and the baby. A good carrier should provide the wearer with support distributed throughout your back, with most of the weight resting on your waist, not your shoulders or upper back. A good carrier also provides your baby with a wide seat to sit in as opposed to a crotch dangling support system. It should also provide support for baby’s head should she fall asleep.

PREPARING TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL Tips From Local Educators My best tip for the new school year to is to be prepared. Understand what will be expected of your child before you start school. Is your child’s math, reading, and writing where it needs to be? If not, then preparing in advance is key. Will your child be expected to be more independent, read harder novels, etc? Teaching your child to be organized now will help later. Attend orientation activities and read through any notes from your child’s teacher carefully. Showing your child that you too enjoy learning will make an impact on their learning. Keeping up to date with how they are progressing and what they are learning is just as (or possibly more) important than keeping up with their grades.
Create a practical schedule for school days that includes time for studying, after- school activities, family time, healthful eating and time for getting outside and being active and that limits screen time. We all become so consumed with the daily grind that we forget to take time with each other and take time to be outside and enjoy our surroundings – taking the time to do this helps children become more focused in school and feel more fulfilled. We like to visit the playground a few times before the first day. We also change back to our school sleep schedule a couple weeks before so that everyone, including myself, is ready for the early morning trips.
Here’s how to get your children ready to be happy and successful when they return to school:

1. Routines. Don’t wait until the last night of summer to reinstate some basic routines. In most cases it takes three weeks of using a routine before it becomes automatic. Set a regular bedtime and wake-up time. Plan to have breakfast together in the morning. 2. Reading and video limits. Hopefully you’ve been scheduling regular time for reading and setting clear limits on screen time throughout the summer. But if you are human, you might have let these occasionally slide. Three weeks of regular reading practice and clear expectations for screen time will re-establish the pattern you want for your child. 3. Celebrations. Plan something special to celebrate and be grateful for the beautiful summer you’ve enjoyed with your family. Celebrations help us deal with transitions, like the end of long hot summer days. 4. For young children, a quick visit to the school or a video chat with your new teacher can be a great way to decrease the small insecurities some children have when going back to school. Contact the teacher or drop by the school and ask to see your new classroom. ZERO DARK THIRTY SUPERHERO Bradley had turned three a few days earlier and we celebrated his birthday with a party, which included his brother Kelly and a few of Brad’s little buddies. Darlene and I were very excited because it was his first birthday as a big brother. I was especially excited about the Batman Big Wheel trike we had picked out as a present for him. I just knew that our gift was going to be a big hit with Bradley, and sure enough, it was. Upon receiving it, he immediately hopped on the trike and headed off down the road as fast as he could go. From then on, most of Brad’s days were spent riding his Big Wheel. In his mind, he was Batman, fighting crime and evil all day long. On weekends or after work I would often play outside with Bradley, pretending I was the Joker or the Penguin. I would run up and down the street and hide in the ditch or behind parked cars to avoid my little Batman, who was always in hot pursuit. We had great fun. As much as I loved playing with Bradley and as wonderful as that father-son time was for the both of us, there was a down side. Bradley, unfortunately, had become fixated on his trike. Getting him to focus on anything else was difficult, which added some new challenges to my life. Always an early riser, Bradley would typically start to stir around 5:30 a.m. and by 6:30, he would be fully awake. Now, with the Big Wheel on his mind, he was up and moving as soon his eyes popped open. Every day he

My early morning blanket and lawn chair moments allowed me to observe the morning routines of my neighbors. Each day they passed by in their vehicles on their way to work at the local pulp mill. They’d see Bradley riding his Big Wheel and me shivering in my lawn chair. This routine carried on day after day until one day their truck stopped in front of me. One of the guys jumped out holding a cup of hot coffee; he walked over and offered it to me. I thankfully accepted his gift of java and we all shared a group chuckle before they headed off down the road to work. The next day, there I was out in my chair again with Bradley riding up and down the road. Sure enough, the pulp mill guys stopped and brought me another gift of coffee. This routine carried on through spring and summer until finally fall came and the first snows of the season ended Bradley’s early morning riding, forcing him to move on to other toys and indoor activities. Time passed and my work in the parks and recreation industry took our family away from Fort Nelson and our pulp mill friends. We had moved to the west coast
It was good to remember that time in my life and be recognized for my fatherly patience and dedication. Being outside with Bradley and watching him ride his Big Wheel seemed like a natural thing for me to do. In some ways, it seemed like a guy thing to share with my son. I have often wondered, if life had been just a little different, if Bradley had been a girl instead of a boy, what I would have been doing at 6:00 a.m. with her. The idea leaves me scratching my head, smiling about what that parenting experience would have been like. Maybe instead of watching my son ride his Big Wheel I would have been sitting in the front room playing Barbies with my daughter, having tea parties and playing dress-up. Who knows, maybe as my own sons marry and start families, I’ll be blessed with a little granddaughter and then I will get my chance to wear that tutu after all. Wear the Right Shoes. Until your kids are walking consistently on their own (birth-3), fit them with a comfortable pair of water resistant shoes. Make sure the three and older kids are wearing light weight trail shoes or boots with a sturdy sole. A Vibram sole with a waterproof breathable liner is preferred. Wear noncotton, moisture wicking, synthetic or wool socks. Dress For The Weather. Wear non-cotton synthetic, wool & fleece clothes and dress in layers. Wear multipurpose clothes like pants that zip off into shorts or shirts with role up sleeves. Pack a waterproof breathable rain parka. Dress Jeff Alt is an avid hiker, to say the least. Kids Party Recipes So Easy and Fun Your Kids Can Help Graham Cracker Ice Cream Sandwiches UÊÊÓÊ£ÉÓÊ« ÌÃÊ ViÊ cream, softened (any flavor you love) UÊÊ Ê}À> > ÊVÀ>V iÀà UÊÊ i Ìi`ÊV V >Ìi]Ê vÊ desired 1. Line an 8 x 8 inch baking dish with parchment paper making sure the edges come up on two sides. 2. Spread the softened ice cream evenly in the lined pan and place in the freezer overnight. 3. Break the graham crackers in half so that you have 18 squares. 4. Using the edges of the parchment paper, lift the ice cream on to a cutting board. 5. Slice the ice cream into 9 equal squares and sandwich between two graham cracker squares. If desired, spread melted chocolate on all the graham cracker squares and press the chocolate side onto the ice cream. 6. Place the ice cream sandwiches back in the freezer for at least 10 minutes before serving. Note: You can also use a 9 x 13 inch baking dish to make thinner sandwiches. Graham Cracker Sandwiches can be individually wrapped with plastic wrap or parchment paper and frozen up to 3 months.

More Kids Party Recipes Marshmallow Pops Ingredients: bag of marshmallows (the round ones work best)
skewers icing (I went for the store bought version, just some warming up and ready to go) colourful sprinkles (different kinds)
Put the marshmallows on the skewers. Place icing in a bowl and sprinkles on plates ready for use. Dip each marshmallow in the icing and right after that in the sprinkles. I put mine in a glass to keep them up and let the icing dry. An alternative is to allow the children to dip their own marshmallows during the party.
Strawberry Pancake Skewers Make tiny (approximately 1” in diameter) pancakes using your favorite mix. You can make them ahead and store them in the freezer. To assemble: slice your strawberries, heat up the pancakes and stack both on a toothpick. Arrange on a plate and cover slightly with some powdered sugar.
