The Traverse City area is famous for its golf courses. But even amid the region's many offerings, LochenHeath is a true original. Since it first opened in 2001, this bayside golf club - which is only 15 miles from beautiful downtown Traverse City - has drawn rave reviews from golfers and the golf media alike. In fact, LochenHeath has been rated one of the top public courses by Golfweek and Golf Magazine. Designed within a 300acre cherry orchard, LochenHeath borders Grand Traverse Bay, offering sweeping views of its deep blue waters. It is one of only a handful of northern Michigan courses crafted in the Scottish links style. The 7,239-yard-course features rolling terrain; wide-open fairways; and deep, well-placed bunkers, providing a welcome challenge for golfers who want to test their shot-making abilities. The sixth hole is situated right on the water's edge, while most holes offer stunning views of the bay. Golfers who want to work on their game will enjoy a practice facility that is among the finest in Michigan. The practice area features target greens and bunkers dotting the landing areas. There are two large putting greens along with a massive green for sand trap practice. There's also a second green so golfers can practice approach shots and chipping. The practice area also features

multi directional tees and a practice fairway bunker. LochenHeath's pro shop is well stocked with a full line of merchandise and the latest apparel. Our staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help golfers get the most out of their LochenHeath experience. The Restaurant at LochenHeath is much more than the typical “19th Hole. Chef Joseph George has won numerous awards for his outstanding and varied menu. He and his team specialize in creative recipes featuring the finest local ingredients. The expansive views from the restaurant's deck are a perfect complement to his amazing table fare. The restaurant offers a casual menu and fine dining nightly. LochenHeath welcomes public play as we grow our membership.

2013 Michigan PGA Junior Tour Registration January 3, 2013
Dear Parents and Juniors, Membership registration for the 2013 Junior Tour season will open on January 22nd, 2013 at 8:00AM. We are still in the process of securing tournaments sites, and will post the schedule as soon as it’s complete. I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Stephen Tibor, and I have recently become the Michigan PGA section Junior Golf Director. I’m originally from Sterling Heights, MI, and a graduate from Central Michigan University. Throughout the past few years I’ve traveled quite a bit, and have continually expanded my knowledge in junior golf. I was fortunate enough to work for the Illinois Junior Golf Association, Mid-American Junior Golf Tour, and most recently with the Southern California PGA. I’m anticipating a great year for our program, and look forward to meeting you all. If you have any questions or concerns you can contact me at stibor@michiganpga.com or by phone at 517-641-7421.

Anatomy of a Publinxer The MI Publinx has received a lot of gruff over the past couple of years about our championship series events that we hold and their validity as prestigious golf events around the state and I want to use this forum to address these opinions. Are these the most prestigious events in the state? No, not yet. Golf tournaments are what you the player want to make of them. I consider them measuring sticks. How do I perform against peers? How do I react personally against pressure on a small or large scale? The Michigan Publinx keeps these events around year over year because we see a need for competitive golf tournaments that give people something to play for whether it is gift certificates, honor roll points, personal pride, etc. We have watched similar organizations come and go year over year like the Amateur Golf Tour or the Shooters Tour and eventually they go by the waste side for whatever reason. Why do these fail? One thought is that people want to make them feel they are bigger then they truly are. We have not taken this approach, we want to offer a competitive forum and we have been successful because we have a core group of participants that play year after year and now it is time to grow that group again.
2013 Your Journey Back Is everyone excited for a great golf season in 2013? I hope Santa was good to all of you and brought you whatever game enhancement tool you had on your wish list. A new driver, putter, irons, or maybe one of the thousands of training aids that seem to hit the market every year. Most importantly I hope Santa brought you a refreshed attitude and game plan to make 2013 your most successful year on the golf course. Every year I am amazed how much talent there is in Michigan and has come out of the state of Michigan. Reading the January issue of “Golf Digest” I see that Bill Zylstra once again made the list of top 10 senior amateurs from around the country. This year Michigan also was very well represented in the final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. Matt Harmon, Justin Hicks, Randy Hutchison, and former Michigan Publinxer Brian Stuard qualified for this final stage. Brian Stuard and Justin Hicks earned PGA Tour cards from their performance on the 2012 Web.com tour season. Without wasting much time in 2013 both players finished in the top 20 of the PGA Tours first full field event, the Sony Open, with Brian finishing in a tie for 5th! Former MI Publinxer’s Martin Jeppesen and Joshua Bauer have had some success on the golf minor league circuit as well. Joshua has earned a card on the PGA Canadian Tour while Martin has had multiple top 10 finishes on the Carolinas segment of the NGA Hooters tour which has produced PGA tour players like Tommy Gainey, Stewart Cink, and many others.
We need to get the recent college graduates that put their dreams away for 4-5 years to attend college, when they did not

Wow, I get pretty excited knowing that I have competed against those players in Michigan Publinx events along with GAM events. Seeing these results gave me a little kick in the pants to ready myself for a better 2013. I have no desire, time, nor the skill set ready for the professional ranks but I can turn all of the events that get offered in Michigan into my own Michigan tour. There are major events available like the Michigan Amateur, MI Publinx Medal Play Championship, the Syron Memorial, MI Publinx State Match Play, and GAM Championship. We also have qualifiers to get into USGA events or events like the Michigan Amateur or GAM Championship. In order to prepare for these events we also have individual medal play tournaments that are offered by the Michigan Publinx. I want to try and play well against the local Michigan talent and beat some of these guys that could be playing on professional tours someday in the future. I could tell my kids/grand kids one day that I played against these guys. We need to find little things that motivate us to become better, whether it is improving one’s handicap, success in tournaments, or improving on personal bests. I encourage you to find whatever motivational tips that can push you to practice a little and fall back in love with a game where measurable goals can be found in droves. One goal could be as simple as to beat a better player head on for one day.

President’s Letter Dear Fellow Golfers,
Championship Division players qualify for the Atlas Trophy Matches in late September at Tullymore Golf Club. This reward will only be for those players that play all Championship Series Events.
So far another mild winter for all of us golf nuts in Michigan!! I couldn’t believe that I was able to play golf on Thanksgiving Day and also that it was 57 degrees on January 12th. I am starting to see the golf domes getting busier now that the PGA Tour has started back up and people are starting to get the itch to play.
The same opportunity also exists for the Net and Senior players, which can help them receive an invitation to the Deyak Invitational in September.
How about updates for the 2013 season. The Board has been busy planning this year’s events and we only made a few changes.
The Honor Roll point structure changed slightly for the 2013 season, as the board voted to remove the points for the Horton Smith Championship due to its invitation only status, and not everyone in the Michigan Publinx has an opportunity to qualify for the event via entry.
Players will still be given the option of selecting how many of the Championship Series Events you would like to play, but we changed the pricing model to price each event separately. The board decided to try some tougher, upscale tournament locations in the rotation. We are kicking the season off at The Orchards and the 3rd Championship Series event will be at Northville Hills. We will be paying out gift certificates to 20% of the field in each of our Championship Series events.
After some discussion and feedback, the board decided to take the State Match Play back to Eagle Glen and The Pines at Lake Isabella. Eagle Glen hosted the tournament from 2001 – 2009 and we are pleased to announce that we are going back. The entry fee will remain the same as 2012 at $ 235, which includes all carts.
In the Championship Series Events, we kept the bonus Honor Roll points that are awarded to the top five finishers in the Championship Division. This reward can help our

Here is a great drill that I learned from my good friend, Mr. Jim Flick, Top 6 Instructor in the world. Simply hit balls with your back turned to the target. This back to target drill will help teach you an anti-slice release and the correct feeling needed through impact: • Start with a short iron and progress to the driver. With a ball teed, set up so your back faces the target. A line across your toes would almost be perpendicular to the target line. Swing the club back, then, keeping your feet where they were at address, swing through. You’ll feel your right hand aggressively turning over your left through impact. Key on your hands and arms working together through impact, the ball should start to the right and curve back to your target. • As you continue this drill and create a repetition of the correct feel with arms and hands, then mix in regular
shots every third swing. As time goes on, you should feel your hands and arms actively turning the club over through impact and the ball curves from right to left… Something you may have never seen from your ball flight!!! Remember to have fun doing drills, as they will create the correct feeling over time and have the quickest impact on your game than any other method of training on the market today! Anatomy of a Publinxer 2013 Your Journey Back Continued from Page 5 get the scholarship they may have wanted after a decent high school career. We want to re-energize this group now that most have graduated and established the early portion of their professional career, revive their love of competitive golf, instead of a weekend Nassau game that can only wet ones whistle to an extent. Let’s see what you have when you have to kick ‘em all into the back of the hole. One of my friend’s most frustrating concerns playing in his clubs events was that you were not really encouraged to putt out. How do you get better? How do you handle nerves? Maybe you want to play in Michigan Amateurs or GAM Championships, or who knows maybe USGA events. Well you need a vehicle to test your skill set or readiness for these events. Why not get ready and test yours skills against other scratch or single digit golfers. There is a different level of pressure in tournament golf and we (Publinx) give an environment to ramp up those skills. The MI Publinx encourages you to take a good long look at competing in our Championship Series events whether in the championship division or net side to start your journey back to competitive golf. We have the events that could aid you in this journey and your suggestions on how to make them more enjoyable are always appreciated. Come join us and see what you got!!

Michigan Publinx Michigan Medal Play Championship The Michigan Publinx Board of Directors has an exciting 2013 season planned for its members. The season starts with our first major tournament of the year that will be held over Memorial Day weekend, the Michigan Publinx Medal Play Championship, with the winner earning the “Lee Gohs Trophy”. The 2013 event will again be held on the three nines at Pheasant Run Golf Club. The feedback we received from the players in 2012 was all positive and we immediately spoke to the golf course about coming back. 2012 was the strongest depth of field that we have ever seen in the history of the tournament. Our average pace of play in 2012 was 6 hours for 27 holes each day. We look to keep the same pace of play this year with utilizing nine minute tee times and threesomes instead of foursomes. The course was in fantastic shape and was a true test of golf for our players for the first Publinx major championship of the year. Greg Davies was our 2012 Championship Division winner with an incredible score of 8 under par. Greg jumped out to a 4 shot lead after day one and then continued his fine play to stretch his lead out to 6 by the end of the tournament. Considering the difficulty of the golf course, 8 under par was an amazing score. Jack Brown was the 2012 Net Division winner after a long playoff with Bruce Fuller and Tom Mulhern. All 3 players net score was 1 over par, showing how difficult the course played. Since 1990, the Michigan Publinx Medal Play Championship has crowned some of the finest amateurs in the state. Past champions include players who have held some lofty state titles such as: • Michigan Amateur Champion • GAM and Michigan Publinx Players of the Year • Horton Smith Championship winners • USGA Amateur Publinx Champion • State Match Play Champions • Syron Memorial Champions The Board of Directors, both past and present, would like to wish you a great golfing season in 2013 and look forward to seeing all of you at our Medal Play Tournament. We hope that you enter our Match Play tournament, the Syron Memorial, and all of the Championship Series events as well. Sincerely, Michigan Publinx Medal Play Committee *Quiz Answers from Page 10

Paul Simson Wins U. S. Senior Amateur Championship Mountain Ridge Country Club • West Caldwell, New Jersey September 29th – October 4th, 2012 (the two seed) was defeated. Steve Golliher (Knoxville, TN.) & Louis Lee (Heber Springs, Ak.) the three and four seeds both won their first round matches. The second round match was a test for both Randy and Greg as they Mark Mann were down early in the match. Randy was able claw back into his match and eventually win 1up but Greg was defeated 3&2 eliminating him for a chance to capture another U.S. Senior title. Greg and Randy are past champions in USGA tournaments with Greg winning the 2002 U.S. Senior Amateur and Randy winning the 2011 Mid Amateur Championship. Steve Golliher & Louis Lee survived their second round but Holtgrieve lost his match eliminating his run after claiming medalist honors.
The Senior Amateur is one of the last championships on the calendar each year with “senior” players hoping they have their best golf of the season in front of them. Michigan was again well represented at a National Championship with five players including Randy Lewis from Alma, Mark Mann from Ann Arbor, Greg Reynolds from Grand Blanc and two players belonging to the Michigan Publinx Golf Randy Lewis Association Ray Emsley (Davisburg) and Mike Fedewa (Canton). After two rounds of qualifying Jim Holtgrieve from St. Louis Mo. emerged as the medalist shooting 136 followed by Stanley Kinsley from Rancho Santa Fe Ca. with a round of 137. From Michigan both Randy Lewis and Greg Reynolds played well and qualified for match play by shooting scores of 145 and tied for 20th. Mike Fedewa, Ray Emsley and Mark Mann missed the cut for match play but played well shooting 152, 159 and 161 respectively. In the first round of Mike Fedewa match play both Randy Lewis and Greg Reynolds advanced to the second round. Randy defeated Dennis Vaughn from Germantown, TN. 3&1 and Greg defeated Mike Booker from The Woodlands TX. 2&1. The number one seed Holtgrieve also advanced but Kinsley

In the quarterfinal matches both Lee and Golliher were defeated by Jim Knoll and Curtis Skinner respectively leaving Paul Simson as the man to beat since he has the most experience with 40 USGA tournaments under his belt and was the 2010 U.S. Senior Amateur Champion. Joining Simson, Skinner and Knoll in the semifinals was Hanzel who defeated Randy Lewis. Simson and Skinner would claim their semi-final matches to face each other in the finals, where Simson displayed his experience by capturing his second Senior Amateur championship with a 4&3 victory over Curtis Skinner.

Publinx State Match Play Returns North In 2013 The Michigan Publinx Golf Association will return to its northern home in 2013 to contest its annual State Match Play Competition. Farwell, MI has long been considered home for the SMP where Eagle Glen and The Pines Golf Club have served as the battlegrounds to determine some of the greatest champions in the history of this fantastic event. The tournament moved south for a few years to Bedford and Rochester, MI where the tournament was held at some great venues such as Bedford Valley Golf Club and Twin Lakes Golf Club but the call from the northern atmosphere was to strong to resist in 2013. Dean Paesens and Joe Schumer (club managers) have done a fantastic job with this tournament through the years and look forward to welcoming back players from all over the state to compete again in 2013. Block off your calendar from July 26th to July 30th, get your game in shape and travel north to see if you can capture a SMP title in 2013.

Game of Your Life Foundation Celebrates 20th Season of Junior Golf In Michigan
G.O.L.F. (Game Of Your Life Foundation), Meijer Junior Players Tour, Adams Golf Junior Tour and Midwest Collegiate Amateur Series are all names/tours that have been synonymous with junior golf programs in Michigan for years.
The ideals behind the Game Of Your Life Foundation are to “not only” provide professionally run junior golf competitions but to teach, through golf, a moral foundation to help our juniors become outstanding members of society.
Twenty years ago PGA Golf Professional, Rolla Frisinger saw a need to help cultivate and inspire junior golf here in Michigan and started the Game Of Your Life Foundation to offer high quality golf competitions for young players.
Rolla’s vision and dedication has earned him many honors during his career including the “Matthews Lifetime Achievement Award” which is presented to an individual or organization that over the span of a lifetime has provided steadfast leadership, outstanding service, and continuous commitment to the Michigan golf industry.
“The Mission Statement” To provide high quality golf competitions at the finest golf facilities affording young people the opportunity to experience the benefits of honesty and integrity, which the game of golf can provide. Profits will be directed toward scholarships for deserving young people. As Rolla”s vision unfolded G.O.L.F. was able to forge a team of alliances and sponsors that ultimately has contributed the success of many young men and women today and most likely for many years to come.
With the idea of “Improving Lives One Junior Golfer at a

working at St. Andrews. He is truly living his dream thanks in part to G.O.L.F. who kept his love for the game alive and the encouragement to realize his dream.”
Time” the foundation has tours designed for all juniors. Starting with the “Meijer Junior Players Tour” both young girls and boys from the ages of 7 to 15 can gain experience and develop their competitive skills. Eligibility is based on their age as of the last tournament date and includes a summer and fall schedule through October.
Currently through 19 years of service the foundation has awarded over $353,000.00 in scholarship money, seen over 15,000 players participate in tournaments with over 500 of these players going on to play professionally or become a PGA Golf Professional. Most important are the words honesty, integrity and sportsmanship that have been instilled into all players and will serve them well for the rest of their lives.
The “Adams Golf Junior Tour” is designed to give a junior the opportunity to develop their game to the next level by playing competitive events that prep them for collegiate play. Multi-day events will include rankings with Junior Golf Scoreboard, most will include the AJGA exemption status and a GolfWeek/Sagarin Rankings. Here is just one of many testimonies regarding the foundation: “G.O.L.F. is so important to so many families and the scholarships awarded are a tremendous help in achieving the dreams of the young adults who take part in the tour. Our son Brett received $1500 in scholarship money in 2004. He used it towards his education at Cornell University and is now studying in Scotland and
If you have a son or daughter who has interest in the game of golf, help cultivate that interest, encourage them to play and contact the foundation for more details on their program. It just might be the biggest difference you can make in your child’s life. www.juniorgolf.org 517-278-4892
