Gaylord Michigan is America’s Summer Golf Mecca

Tom Fazio Premier The Gaylord Golf Mecca, one of the premier summer golf destinations in the country located in northern Michigan, has hosted nearly 4 million golfers over the past 26 years according to the Gaylord Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Jones gave Sylvan Ski Resort owner Harry Melling the name that captures northern Michigan golf. “Treetops” Jones said when he looked out from the tee site of his par-3 sixth hole and saw nothing but green tree tops as far as the eye could see. Melling renamed the resort Treetops and named the course the Jones Masterpiece.

Gaylord Michigan is America’s Summer Golf Mecca Continued from Page 8 Barry Owens, Treetops general manager who was in on the Mecca from the beginning with his father-in-law, Ron Otto, at Garland Resort, credited Beachnau for the Mecca’s continuing success despite some difficult economic conditions. “I’ve always believed in cooperative marketing when you have a unified cause,” Owens said. “You make the pie bigger for everyone so you don’t beat up each other. Other organizations have tried it over the years but Paul is the glue who holds it altogether and his leadership style is the big reason for our success.” “The Mecca marketing is what put Gaylord on the map,” said Larry Bowden, owner of Marsh Ridge and The Natural

Ron Beurmann Wins the 2013 Michigan Senior PGA Professional Championship! By Justin Phillips Ron Beurmann from the Country Club of Jackson continued his fine play this year by winning the 2013 Michigan Senior PGA Professional Championship presented by O ’ K e e f e / S o u t h w o r t h Development/Mercedes Benz today at Birchwood Farms Golf & Country Club in Harbor Springs. With 17 players within 3 shots of the lead to start the day we knew anything could happen. Ron was able to make a 15 foot birdie putt on the final hole to force a playoff with Bob Makoski, both Ron and Bob shot (-2) under par rounds of 70 today to finish at (-4) under for the tournament. Ron was able to defeat Bob on the first playoff hole with a par. This is Ron’s first Michigan Senior PGA Championship win. He solidified his position as the Michigan Senior Player of the Year as he also won the Club Car Senior

Open a few weeks ago at Bedford Valley. The top 10 qualifiers from here will move on to represent the Michigan Section in the 2013 Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship presented by Mercedes Benz on October 10-13, 2013 at Creighton Farms and River Creek Club in Virginia. Joining Ron Beurmann and Bob Makoski in qualifying are John Traub, Frank McAuliffe, Lee Houtteman, Mark Hill, Mick DeKorver, Barry Redmond, Dave Kendall and George Bowman. Nick Berklich, a PGA Life member from Grand Blanc recorded a (-3) under par round of 69 in the first round and a 81 in the second round to win the Super Senior 70+ Division. We would like to thank our host site Birchwood Farms Golf & CC. This is the first year that they have hosted this event. The golf course is in great shape and proved

14

to be an excellent venue. The club kicked things off by hosting an opening party on Sunday night for the players that also served as a fundraiser for the Northern Chapter First Tee Program. We would also like to thank our sponsors of this event. We have a local sponsor O’Keefe that has stepped up to help support the event along with our National Sponsors Southworth Development, Mercedes Benz and the PGA Tour.

U.S. Amateur Championship The Country Club – Brookline Mass August 12-18, 2013 Matt Fitzpatrick - Winner

Over 300 hundred players competed at this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship in Colorado. The state of Michigan had four players who qualified or were exempt for the championship including Randy Lewis (Alma), Andrew Walker (Battle Creek), Evan Bowser (Dearborn) and Gates Muller from Traverse City. Michigan had two players with notoriety in the field. The first was Randy Lewis (The second oldest in the field at 56). Randy has competed in 22 USGA events and won the 2011 US Mid Amateur championship. In addition Randy was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall Fame in 2009. On the other end of the age group is Andrew Walker who is the youngest competitor in the field at age 14. Andrew is the fifth youngest player to ever qualify for the US Amateur. Here is some interesting statistics about the number of players in the field with recent USGA competition on their resumes. Number Who Played in 2012 U.S. Amateur: 64 Number Who Played in 2013 U.S. Open: 8 (Steven Fox, Gavin Hall, Max Homa, Michael Kim, Cory McElyea, Grayson Murray, Cheng-Tsung Pan, Michael Weaver) Number Who Played in 2013 U.S. Senior Open: 2 (Michael McCoy, Curtis Skinner) Number Who Played in 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links: 28

Number Who Played in 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur: 9 The number of players that have won a USGA event or been a runner up: USGA champions (7): Steven Fox (2012 Amateur), Randal Lewis (2011 Mid-Amateur), Jim Liu (2010 Junior Amateur), Jordan Niebrugge (2013 Amateur Public Links), Scottie Scheffler (2013 Junior Amateur), Nathan Smith (2003, 2009, 2010, 2012 MidAmateur), Cory Whitsett (2007 Junior Amateur) USGA Runners-Up (10): Chelso Barrett (2011 Junior Amateur), Evan Beck (2008 Junior Amateur), Michael Kim (2013 Amateur Public Links), Randal Lewis (1996 Mid-Amateur), Jim Liu (2012 Junior Amateur), Garrett Rank (2012 Mid-Amateur), Davis Riley (2013 Junior Amateur), Curtis Skinner (2012 Senior Amateur), Justin Thomas (2010 Junior Amateur), Michael Weaver (2012 Amateur) First Round Qualifying: Nick Hardy (Northbrook, IL.) set the pace in the first round with a score of 65 (five under par) followed by Richy Werenski from South Hadley, Mass. Richy fired a round of 66. Eighteen players broke par, with another eighteen players shooting even par. When the round was through fifty-seven players would shoot 71 or less. The Michigan players had a pretty ruff start for the championship. Andrew Walker got off to the best start shooting 76, tied for 179th

place. Randy Lewis and Evan Bowser both shot 80 followed by Gates Muller with 82. Second Round Qualifying: At the end of the second and final round of qualifying the leader board might suggest this was The World Amateur rather than the US Amateur as the top five finishers were from other countries. Nick Hardy the first round leader took a few step back wards and tied for sixth with a score of 138. Brady Watt (Australia) and Neil Raymond (England) shared the top honors and would be Co-Medalist with scores of 134. Three players tied for third, Justin Shin (Canada), Matthew Fitzpatrick (England) and Oliver Goss (Australia) firing rounds of 137. The Michigan connection had a great experience but failed to qualify for match play competition. Andrew Walker the young sensation from Battle Creek turned in the best finish shooting 153, followed by Randy Lewis at 158, Evan Bowser 160 and Gates Muller at 167. First Round Match Play: The first round of match play was completed with all four top seeds Neil Raymond, Brady Watt, Oliver Goss and Justin Shin winning their first match. Raymond and Goss had to survive close matches both winning 1up. Second Round Match Play: The field of 32 had fourteen international players. Canada, Australia and England each had four players representing their countries and looking to take the trophy home with them.

Randy Lewis

Fourth Round Match Play: The quarter final field of eight found the internationals taking the lead with five players remaining and setting up the possibility of two Australians facing each other in the semifinals and two Englanders facing each other in the other semi final match. Matt Fitzpatrick from England marked his spot in the semifinals by defeating Adam Ball from Virginia 4&3 but Corey Conners from Canada (40th seed) made sure there wouldn’t be two Englishmen dueling each other in the semifinals by beating the number one seed Neil Raymond quite handily 5&3. Both Watt and Goss won their match to make it to the semi-finals. Fifth Round Match Play: In the semi-finals the two Australians faced each other where Goss defeated Watt 2up to punch his ticket to the final round to face Fitzpatrick who defeated Conner’s 2&1. Final Match: In the final match the first eighteen holes was very competitive with Fitzpatrick holding a 1up lead. Matt is trying to be the first Englishmen to win the Amateur since 1911, while Goss is attempting to be the third Australian to ever win a amateur. As final eighteen holes continued Fitzpatrick slowly took control and eventually won the title with a 4&3 victory. Early this month Matt had also qualified for “The Open Championship” where he made the cut and was the low amateur for the tournament.

When the dust settled in the second round Raymond, Watt and Goss won their matches leaving three of the top four players in contention.

• • • • • • Third Round Match Play: The field of sixteen continued at an even split between international and US players with eight apiece. Raymond, Watt and Goss continued their march towards the finals by chalking up another win in their matches.
