The Fortress Golf Club - Frankenmuth For information about Michigan Publinxer golf magazine contact J-Ad Graphics. This magazine is published five times per year on the 10th of the month and is distributed throughout Michigan.
The Fortress was designed by Dick Nugent and opened in 1993. The Fortress plays to 6,813 yards from the tips with a rating of 73.6 and a slope of 138. The course, also offer's two other sets of tees, the middle set at 6,271 yards and the ladies' tees at 4,837 yards. Nugent patterned the course after the Scottish links courses where the game originated. Mounding, matted with fescue grasses, separates most of the winding fairways and will quickly swallow an errant drive, as will the rough, which course officials always keep several inches thick.

Many of the bent grass greens are incredibly large, averaging 7,500 square feet each, leaving you some challenging putts. Water comes in to play on 10 of the holes. When Nugent finally sprinkled in 69 bunkers, including 39 on the back, he had manufactured one tough test of shot making. Golfweek proclaimed the course one of "America's Best Golf Courses" in 1993. The course's amenities have everything you'd expect from a first-class outfit. The barn-style clubhouse is home to a small restaurant/bar area and a pro shop. Outside, a covered pavilion can handle a large outing. The practice area features a separate chipping and putting green, along with a target-style range. The Fortress, a par-72 championship golf course, offers several great package deals with the nearby Zehnder's Restaurant, which is famous for its family-style dining with an early American theme and some tasty chicken entrees. Frankenmuth is also known for its multitude of specialty shops and just a few miles away, the Birch Run outlet mall offers everything a shopper could be looking for. * TRAVERSE CITY * But let’s face it: the universe is full of welldesigned golf courses. A truly world-class golf destination needs to offer something more. Something genuine. It has to be a real place with its own story, its own flavor, its own soul — and it has to offer a golfer something special once he or she leaves the course. That’s what sets Traverse City apart. Situated on beautiful Grand Traverse Bay in Northern Michigan’s wine country, Traverse City has long been treasured for its serenity, its beauty, and its unique mixture of relaxation, adventure and natural splendor, with miles of beautiful beaches and lakeshore vistas. Its restaurants have given it a reputation as one of America’s up and coming “foodie” towns (Bon Appetit magazine has listed it among the top five in the nation.) and its vineyards are producing some of the best wines in the country. The beer is pretty good, too; Draft magazine calls it one of America’s emerging beer towns! Ancient glaciers carved the deep clear lakes and dramatic hills that give golf in Traverse City its breathtaking natural setting, and the finishing touches on its 17 golf courses were added by the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Jerry Matthews and Tom Weiskopf.
Shoppers are drawn to the city’s tree-shaded and pedestrian-friendly downtown, where a decade of thoughtful restoration and renovation has yielded beautiful results: scores of fascinating boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and galleries, and lots of places to sit and relax. (Meanwhile, the Grand Traverse Commons, a former mental asylum, offers some shopping and dining adventures of its own, as do the nearby villages of Suttons Bay, Bellaire, Leland and Glen Arbor.) There’s a wide variety in the lodging choices open to golfers, too. You can stay in a fullservice resort right at the edge of the fairway, of course. But you might prefer to stake out a spot on the beach at one of the town’s many waterfront inns, find a quiet hideaway in a hilltop vineyard chateau or rent a secluded cabin in the woods. When that summer sun finally goes down, there’s still plenty to do. Nightlife in Traverse City can be an evening of cool jazz in a downtown restaurant, some cutting-edge rock in a Union Street bistro, or some gaming fun in a local casino. It’s easy to see why this “Golf Coast” of the Midwest has been awarded the #12 spot in Golf Digest’s list of the World’s Top 50 Golf Destinations, and has been called “America’s
7
Summer Golf Capital” by Golf Magazine. Just last year, it was ranked #7 in the Top 10 Golf Cities in the U.S. Strange but true: Traverse City is a great place to play golf, because there’s so much more to do than just play golf!

Impact “The Moment of Truth” Your P.G.A. Professional Director of Instruction
Try this drill:
IMPACT LOADER: Get set up in your normal set up position but lift the club face up and place it in front of the ball on the target side. Lean the shaft of the club slightly forward while moving a majority of your weight on your lead foot and towards your heel of that foot. Swing back and attempt to return to that position with an exaggerated shorter than normal follow through! It should feel like a simulated punch shot that you are trying to hit lower. Hit ten of these in a row and then take three normal swings. Repeat this practice simulation for 45 minutes twice per week and you will start to hear and feel better impact. So many times when speaking to my clients or discussing the golf swing in a leisurely conversation do I hear talk about swing positions at the halfway back position or at the top of the back swing, but rarely do I hear people focusing on impact position. I must say that as an industry as a whole we as teachers do not portray the position of impact with enough importance. If we start this season out with a renewed focus on improving our impact position, we all will become better golfers! Here is a picture of Tiger Woods at impact. Let’s try and copy this position through working on a drill.

Rules of Golf Quiz - June 1. Mike’s ball lay against an out of bounds fence. He has no shot, so he goes to the non-golf course side of the fence and strikes the fence, moving the ball. What is the Ruling? a. Mike has proceeded properly and the stroke counts. b. Mike has not proceeded properly and incurs a onestroke penalty for moving his ball in play and must replace it. c. Mike has not proceeded properly and incurs a onestroke penalty for moving his ball in play, but does not have to replace it.
does so and the group is ready to tee off when Mike arrives. What is the Ruling: a. Mike incurs a two-stroke penalty for substitution, even though he didn’t play any strokes with the new putter. b. Mike has proceeded correctly and incurs no penalty. c. Mike has incurred a two-stroke penalty for substitution because the new putter he took from the trunk was not one of the clubs he had selected for play. 6. Jason scores 4 on the 6th hole. His fellow-competitor and marker puts down a 5. At the scoring table the players check their cards. Jason turns in his card and leaves the table. When he gets to his car, it dawns on him that he actually had a 4 on the 6th hole and returns to the scoring table. What is the Ruling? a. The score of 5 stands as the scorecard was turned in and official when Jason had left the scoring area. b. Jason can change his score to a 4 with the committee and markers consent because the results of the competition have not been announced. c. Jason can have the committee change the score after explaining the circumstances of the scorecard.
2. Larry, when starting the 3rd hole, plays from outside the teeing ground. He then takes 3 more strokes before ending up on the putting green. His fellow-competitor tells him that he has to go back and correct from the teeing ground or will be disqualified if he tees off at the next hole. Larry must go back and play correctly from within the teeing ground, incurring a two-stroke penalty playing from outside the teeing ground, but no additional penalties for the strokes he played from outside the teeing ground. True / False 3. Joe arrives at the putting green and his ball is 3 feet from the hole. Because of the early morning rain, the cup is full of water. Joe doesn’t want to have to stick his hand in all that water after holing out, so he removes water from the cup with his hand, careful not to touch the inside of the cup. He then putts the ball and heads to the next tee. What is the Ruling? a. There is no penalty if Joe does not touch the cup while doing this, as that would be considered touching his line of putt. b. There is a two-stroke penalty under Rule 13-2 for improving his line of putt by removing water. c. There is a two-stroke penalty under Rule 13-2 for improving his line of putt and another two-stroke penalty for touching his line of putt.
7. A player’s ball lies in a water hazard. The player approaches the ball and takes a couple of practice swings in the hazard, touching long grass growing in the hazard. The player incurs a two-stroke penalty for touching grass growing in a hazard. True / False 8. Paul’s .ball lies in the fairway and he is between clubs for his next stroke. The local Rule for distance measuring devices is not in effect, so he couldn’t use his laser. However; there is a player who has an afternoon tee time walking with the group and using a laser to check yardages. Paul asks the player to measure the distance from his ball to the hole. The player does so. Paul is disqualified. True / False 9. A player’s ball lies in a water hazard. Which of the following would not constitute testing the Conditions of the Hazard. a. Placing his clubs and bag in the hazard. b. Leaning on a rake while waiting for his turn to play. c. Marking the position of the ball by pushing a tee into the ground behind the ball. d. Placing his towel on the ground in the hazard.
4. Player A, whose ball is farthest away from the hole, putts and as his ball is moving toward the hole, Player B thinks the ball might strike the flagstick that has been removed and laying on the putting green. He picks up the flagstick. Player B incurs a penalty from removing an obstruction that might influence the ball. True / False 5. Mike finishes the 9th hole and before going to #10, he decides that the putter he used on the front 9 caused him to 3 putt 4 greens and he is going to change it, even though he has 14 clubs. He goes to his car and exchanges the putters. When he gets back to the cart, one of his fellow-competitors tells him that he doesn’t think that he can change putters. They drive to the tee and are waiting for the group ahead of them to move out of the fairway and Mike decides he better get his original putter back. He

GAM / Senior Match Play Championship Travis Pointe Golf Club ~ May 28-31, 2013 Like many senior events, this championship has really grown in popularity and you need to sign up fast if want to be in the field. The senior division had over 100 players and the super seniors had over 35. This tournament is short, sweet and fast, so you better get off to a good start if you want to qualify for the match play field of 32 or 16 for the super seniors. With good conditions, Bill Zylstra set the pace – firing a round of 67 (medalist) followed by Jeff Knudson with 69. The field was paired down to the top 32 and the list of qualifying players is pretty impressive. Besides Zylstra and Knudson, Randy Lewis, Ian Harris, Greg Reynolds, Mike Fedewa and Ray Emsley (defending champion) all qualified and these players have all made their mark through the years as top amateur players. The super seniors fired some pretty strong rounds as well, with Pete Doerr capturing the medalist honors with a round of 75 followed by John Lindholm with 76. In the first round of match play, Zylstra had a very tight match, winning in 21 holes over John Armstrong. In the second round, Zylstra ran into a very hot Jerry Blake who won his first match 4&3 and then finished off Zylstra 4&2.
Randy Lewis also ran into a buzz saw, getting beat in the first round 7&5 by Mike Sequite. At the end of the second round, all four ( Zylstra, Knudson, Richart & Lewis) the top four seeds had been eliminated from competition, proving again that anything can happen in match play competition. In the super senior division, Pete Doerr won his first round match 4&3 and all four (Doerr, Johnson, Lindholm & Gasper) of the top seeds advanced into the second round. In the senior division, fifth seed Mike Raymond and 10th seed Greg Reynolds got on a roll and made into the final match where Mike and Greg had a closely contested match, with Mike Raymond coming out on top winning in 20 holes. The same kind of action took place in the super senior division where John French (10th seed) and George Dillon (11th seed) tiptoed through their matches to face each other in the final match. After 19 holes of competition, it was George who took home the trophy.
Congratulations, Mike & George

Publinx State Match Play Returns North In 2013 The Michigan Publinx Golf Association will return to its northern home in 2013 to contest its annual State Match Play Competition. Farwell, MI has long been considered home for the SMP where Eagle Glen and The Pines Golf Club have served as the battlegrounds to determine some of the greatest champions in the history of this fantastic event. The tournament moved south for a few years to Bedford and Rochester, MI where the tournament was held at some great venues such as Bedford Valley Golf Club and Twin Lakes Golf Club but the call from the northern atmosphere was to strong to resist in 2013. Dean Paesens and Joe Schumer (club managers) have done a fantastic job with this tournament through the years and look forward to welcoming back players from all over the state to compete again in 2013. Block off your calendar from July 26th to July 30th, get your game in shape and travel north to see if you can capture a SMP title in 2013.

Andrew Chapman Wins102nd Michigan Amateur Championship Muskegon Country Club • June 18 - 22, 2013 Christian Vozza captured the last Michigan Amateur Championship held at Muskegon Country Club in 2005. This small golf course is a true test for these amateurs. This Donald Ross course is short but the greens can be very difficult. First round action found great weather along with some good scores starting with Tom Werkmeister, the 2013 Michigan Open Champion. Tom scrambled through the first few holes but managed to turn in the best score of the opening round (70). Four players trailed Tom by one shot along with ten more players at two shots back. Thirteen more players would finish within four shots of the leader, which made the second round very important to qualify for match play. Second round action was much like the first with great weather and more solid play from the Michigan Open Champion. Tom worked his way around Muskegon Country C.C. for another round of 70 and grabbed the “Medalist Honors”. Otto Black from Pinckney MI secured second place, three shots back of Tom, followed by Mike Ignasiak from Saline at four shots and Reed Hrynewich (Muskegon) along with Alex Dombrowski (Gaylord) tied for fourth at five shots back. The top 64 players qualified for match play, looking to advance to the final match and capture this year’s championship. Some of the top “experienced” players in the state advanced to the field of 64
including Bill Zylstra the current number one senior amateur in the country, Greg Davies the 2006 Amateur Champion, Russ Cunningham the 2010 GAM Player of the decade, along with a host of young talent looking to stake their claim in Michigan golf history. First Round: Tom Werkmeister went right to work winning his match against Carson Castellani 2&1. Otto Black and Mike Ignasiak also advanced to the second round but the forth seed Alex Dombrowski was defeated by Scott Wirth in very close match (1 up). In other action Greg Davies & Russ Cunningham also advanced to the second round winning their matches 2up & 1up respectively. Second Round: Andrew Chapman put an end to the fairy tale run that Tom Werkmeister has enjoyed over the last few weeks by defeating Tom in extra holes. On the third playoff hole Andrew made birdie to closeout Tom and move into the next round. Otto Black and Mike Ignasiak are the remaining top seeds in the field recording a 1up win over Nicholas Campbell and 4&2 over Andrew Yeager respectively. Davies and Cunningham also advanced to the third round setting up a potential match against each other in the fourth round. In addition to their great accomplishments in the GAM Association both Davies and Cunningham are past champions of the Michigan Publinx State Match Play Tournament. Third Round: This round featured a lot of tightly contested matches with the exception of Mike Ignasiak who defeated Greg Davies 6&5 and Russ Cunningham 3&2 over Ryan Johnson. All the other matches were decided by margins of 2&1, 1up and extra holes. Tom Gieselman defeated Otto Black in 19 holes, leaving Ignasiak the last top seed in the field. Fourth Round: Mike Ignasiak, Tom Gieselman, Andy Chapman and Brad Bastion defeated their opponents handily setting up semi final matches featuring Ignasiak vs. Gieselman and Chapman vs, Bastion. Semi Final Matches: Ignasiak and Chapman both played very solid rounds again where they defeated their opponents 3&2 and advanced to the final round to face each other. Final Round: The final round action was the type of action you like to see. Both players battled hard and the match was extremely tight throughout seventeen holes where they stood on the final tee “tied”. On the last hole, Andrew Chapman emerged as the winner by sinking a long birdie putt to capture the championship 1up.
Congratulations, Andy!

Tom Werkmeister (Grand Rapids, Amateur) Wins 2013 Michigan Open Championship The Orchards Golf Club • June 10 – 13, 2013
Over 150 players were greeted by rain and wet soggy conditions for the first round of the Michigan Open Championship. Barrett Kelpin, the defending champion, opened the first round of defense with a nice three under par 69. Nineteen players would break par and Barrett was tied for second place with four other players, including Scott Hebert from Grand Traverse Resort & Spa and Andy Ruthkoski from Muskegon who both are former Michigan Open champions. The leader in the first round was a wellknown amateur from Grand Rapids, Mich. by the name of Tom Werkmeister. Werkmeister fired a round of 66; six under
par. Tom worked his way around the golf course hitting every green in regulation and made a few putts to turn in a great round of golf. In the second round, Tom Werkmeister turned in another fine performance with a 70 but Andy Ruthkoski fired a round of 67 to go into the third round tied with Tom at 136. Eric Wohlfield from Brighten got on a roll shooting 67 to trail Tom and Andy by one shot. Barrett Kelpin, the defending champion, was two shots back, setting up a tight race over the final two rounds. After the second round, the field was cut to the top 70 players. Twenty-four amateurs made the cut, which is almost one third of the field. Third round action found Werkmeister remaining steady and taking the out right lead going into the final round. Tom turned in a round of five under par (67) while Ruthkoski stumbled shooting 73, falling six shots behind and five shots behind Barrett Kelpin who stood alone in second place, one shot behind Werkmeister.
In the final round, Werkmeister got off to a great start capturing two birdies in the first three holes. Through six holes Tom still held the lead but only by one shot as Barrett Kelpin was right there for a chance to defend his title. After nine holes and a couple of bogies by Barrett and a bogie by Tom, Tom extended his lead by two shots. Over the final nine holes, Werkmeister remained steady, calm and with a two-stroke lead he was able to finish off the tournament to capture what might be his greatest victory ever! Tom Werkmeister has won just about every major amateur championship in Michigan and some several times but he is just the fifth amateur to ever win this open championship and the first amateur in the last 38 years!
Congratulations, Tom!
