Welcome to Hemlock Golf Club For information about Michigan Publinxer golf magazine contact J-Ad Graphics. This magazine is published five times per year on the 10th of the month and is distributed throughout Michigan.

Opening in 2002, Hemlock Golf Club is conveniently located just outside the city of Ludington and is one of golf's best values. Designed by nationally acclaimed architect Raymond Hearn, Hemlock Golf Club is very formidable 18-hole, 7044-yard course from the championship tees and the epitome of picture perfect playable golf from the other four sets of teeing areas. Sculpted from natural landscape that features rolling topography, unspoiled wetlands, deciduous and evergreen forests, and unique sand dune formations, Hemlock Golf Club has received rave reviews from Golf Magazine, Golf Digest, and The Wall Street Journal: Golf Magazine named Hemlock Golf Club in the top 35 of 325 new courses opened in the United States in 2002. Golf Magazine March/2003

Despite its ominous name, Hemlock is a real treat. Ron Whitten, Golf Digest

Ray Hearn won kudos from golf writers for his Hemlock Golf Club in Ludington, Michigan, where his low profile design challenges golfers with narrow alleys, exposed sand dunes and deceptively pitched greens. Paulette Thomas, Wall Street Journal October/2002

The combination of these characteristics and the natural waste area is what makes Hemlock Golf Club one of the most unique golf experiences in Michigan.

Dear Parents and Juniors, Membership registration for the 2013 Junior Tour season will open on January 22nd, 2013 at 8:00AM. We are still in the process of securing tournaments sites, and will post the schedule as soon as it’s complete. I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. Visit Central Michigan & Central Michigan Swing to Make A Great Golf Destination!

Eagle Glen and The Pines at Lake Isabella team up in 2013 to host the 59th State Match Play Championship. This July central Michigan welcomes the 2013 Michigan Publinx State Match Play Championship. Local favorites Eagle Glen and The Pines at Lake Isabella host the 59th annual event and golfers are geared up for a great time. Can’t play in Scotland? That’s why Eagle Glen brought Scotland to Michigan. With natural wetlands and bunkers bordering fine grass fairways in the tradition of Scotland’s finest courses this picturesque, rolling terrain may have been central Michigan’s best kept secret, but it is sure to shine this year at the tournament. The Pines at Lake Isabella is the second course in the tournament and you’ll find a fun, yet challenging course surrounded by large growing pines. When you reach the 15th tee take a moment to soak in the view. That’s what The Pines is all about. Reminding you to enjoy your day on the greens and surrounding you with natural beauty. You will be able to overlook the beautiful lake as well as stand atop the dam separating the lake from the flowing Chippewa River. The two featured courses are not the only places you will find amazing golf in central Michigan. The area boasts more than a dozen play worthy courses. If you’re interested in coming up throughout the summer check out www.micentralswing.com, a cus-

tom play and stay program out of Mount Pleasant where you can play courses ranging from the Premiere St. Ives, Tullymore, Bucks Run, and PohlCat to challenging fourstar courses like Snow Snake, The Emerald, and Riverwood. They even offer fun local courses like the newly owned Maple Creek or Pleasant Hills, a local favorite. The program will set up your tee times and find you the best hotel in the area so all you have to do is show up and have a great time. With so many courses and multiple lodging options you can truly create your own custom golf package based on where you want to play and how much you want to spend. So when you’re up for the state tournament this July be sure to check out courses like the well known Bucks Run. The course scenery is relaxing, beautiful and winds around Lake Fisher, the Chippewa River, and several natural wetlands. The greens are fast and healthy, and you can see that attention has been paid to every detail making this Jerry Mathews layout worthy of its 4.5 star rating. Snow Snake, a striking golf course, tucked away in central Michigan with its challenging terrain, elevation, undulating green, and tree lined fairways, Snow Snake is sure to give any golfer a challenge as you experience the feeling of being up north, without the extra two-hour drive. Snow Snake’s signature hole would have to be number four. With a green guarded by a deep valley in the front and lined with boulders along the back - topped with luscious flowers, you’ll see why number four is the most photographed and discussed post-round. Riverwood Resort, a 4 star course, which will test any golfer’s ability and skill level and bring out the best in your game. Golf Digest’s voted them one of the top places to play and when you hit the number nine hole, one of the most popular holes, you’ll be given a full sensory experience. As you

7

approach the 359 yardage, the scenic pond and water fountain come alive as you’re surrounded by the green bunkers. From the tee the Chippewa River is flowing softly behind you, relaxing you as you prepare for a tough tee shot. This is what golfers look for in every course they play, the challenge, the scenery, and that zen moment right before the swing. All of this can be found right in the sweet center of Michigan, Mount Pleasant, where you will discover small town hospitality with big town amenities. When you’re in town be sure to check out the beautiful downtown area with local boutique shops, locally owned restaurants, and the charm only a downtown can supply. The fun and excitement doesn’t stop there. The Soaring Eagle Casino offers up more than 4,000 slot machines, table games, and a bingo hall. While the entertainment hall and outdoor summer concert series features some of the best live entertainment around. Don’t forget there’s something for the whole family to enjoy; perhaps a visit to the new Children’s Discovery Museum, a day pass at the water park, or a stroll through the new gardens on the campus of Central Michigan University are just a few activities you can find right here in central Michigan. For more information about the play and stay golf program, lodging opportunities, and events in Mount Pleasant visit www.mountpleasantwow.com or call (989) 772 4433.

Finish In Balance Your P.G.A. Professional Director of Instruction Director of Boyne Golf Academy Head Golf Professional at Boyne for 10 years Former Michigan P.G.A. State Pro-Am Champion Former P.G.A Teacher of the Year for the Northern Chapter of the Michigan P.G.A.

We all know what an unbalanced golf swing, follow through looks like and feels like. Here is something that I encourage all my students to do during the off-season and leading into springtime. Let’s face it......we all had good intentions of working out, stretching, and strengthening our golf specific muscles this off season but time got away from us! What I like to have students do is to make nice rhythmic golf swings inside with a nice balanced finish holding the pose seen in the pictures below for a three-second count. Notice the

golf shaft splits my head in half thru my ears. Notice my hips and shoulders are fairly level with the ground and my weight has transferred to my left foot/heel giving me great support from my lower body under where the club has been swung. I suggest starting with 25 swings three times per week for the first two weeks then slowly increase that each week until you can reach a goal of 200 swings three days per week. You will be pleasantly surprised at the result come springtime. Your friends will wonder what golf school you have attended! Just tell them it was the Boyne Golf Academy and Brian O’Neill that helped you get golf ready!

The “41st” Fuller Cup May 7th, 2013 • Eagle Eye Golf Club • Bath Michigan One of the first golf tournaments of the year was contested May 7th at Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath Michigan. Each year the top Michigan Pros square off with the top GAM Amateurs in a series of matches to claim bragging rights for the season. This year, the pros sent a team comprising of Gary Smithson, John Seltzer, Kevin Muir, Tom Harding, Scott Hebert, Brian Cairns Kyle Martin Matt Zavadil, Josh Fryer, T J Roberts, Dave Kendal and Ian Ziska to compete against a GAM team of Tom Werkmeister, Spencer Slade, Eric Schleicher, Brian Hayward, Nathan Clark, Tom Gieselman, Evan Bowser, Eric Spencer, Wes Gates, Phil Gieseker, Michael Horn and Andrew Chapman. Through the years the pros have pretty much dominated this competition but the GAM team has held the trophy since 2009. The mission was simple for the Pros “Reclaim The Fuller Cup” and that they did. In the morning, four-ball matches the Pros took four of six matches setting up a lot of work for the GAM team in the afternoon single matches. For the GAM team to retain the cup they had to capture seven of the twelve possible afternoon points. As the single matches started to unfold, the Pros won four of the first six matches and would go on to win seven of the 12 afternoon matches to reclaim the cup with a 11 to 7 victory over the GAM team.

Publinx State Match Play Returns North In 2013 The Michigan Publinx Golf Association will return to its northern home in 2013 to contest its annual State Match Play Competition. Farwell, MI has long been considered home for the SMP where Eagle Glen and The Pines Golf Club have served as the battlegrounds to determine some of the greatest champions in the history of this fantastic event. The tournament moved south for a few years to Bedford and Rochester, MI where the tournament was held at some great venues such as Bedford Valley Golf Club and Twin Lakes Golf Club but the call from the northern atmosphere was to strong to resist in 2013. Dean Paesens and Joe Schumer (club managers) have done a fantastic job with this tournament through the years and look forward to welcoming back players from all over the state to compete again in 2013. Block off your calendar from July 26th to July 30th, get your game in shape and travel north to see if you can capture a SMP title in 2013.

Dave Vaclav Wins 2013 Michigan Publinx Medal Play Tournament Pheasant Run Golf Club – Canton MI • May 25th & 26th, 2013

Memorial Day weekend marks one of the best weekends of the year for tournament golf! This year was no exception as the Publinx Michigan Medal Tournament continues to attract top players from all over the state to win the Lee Gohs Trophy. The field had over 90 players again this year and the change in venue appears to have played a big part in the attendance. Greg Bores (PGA Pro) and his staff at Pheasant Run did just a fabulous job and the course is a good test for these great players. The weather seems like it is always a factor but not this year as the conditions were perfect, sun, cool and no wind!

In the Championship Division Dave Vaclav went right to work and took full advantage of the conditions. Dave fired the only sub-par round of the day shooting 106 but Eric Dovre was right behind Dave shooting even par 108. In the net division it was the Szymanski “duo” Robert and Steven setting the pace shooting “net” scores of 101 and 105, respectively. Dick Blank provided the shot of the day with a “Hole-In-One” on hole 25, his playing partners claimed it was a perfect shot! In the final championship round of 27 holes, the scoring conditions continued with Anthony Sorentino (2012 Publinx Player of The Year) stepping up with the best round of the tournament shooting 102, followed by Erik Schleicher with 103. Dave Vaclav fired

104 to continue his fine play and distance him self from the field, shooting a total score of 210 for a seven shot victory over Eric Dovre who shot 217. In the final round of the “net” division, the Szymanski “duo” just continued to roll. This father and son team took first and second place with plenty of cushion from the third place finisher Fritz Reifert. In the end, it was the son Robert who took home the trophy shooting a sizzling net score of 207, five shots better than his father Steven. On behalf of the players, we would like to thank the Publinx Tournament Committee, the staff at Pheasant Run Golf Club and the Officials who did a fantastic job!

WerkmeisterWins 7th West Michigan Amateur Title! Quail Ridge Golf Club • Ada, Michigan • May 18th & 19th, 2013 For years the WMA made home Candlestone Golf Club in Belding, Mich. and in 2013 decided to move to a new venue “Quail Ridge”. Quail Ridge was started when Randy Erskine, a five-time Michigan Open Champion and former PGA Tour player, partnered with Michigan’s own renowned architect, Raymond Hearn and 15 other investors to create a “great golf course with classic lines...that would be playable for players of all levels.” Quail Ridge opened in 1998. This 18-hole championship course is known for its stunning natural beauty and lush greenery. The most obvious characteristics are the generous fairways and greens. Large trees, gentle hills, water and bunkers come into play, but with five sets of tees capable of playing to 6900 yards, this course made a competitive challenge for these top amateurs in the West Michigan Amateur Tournament. Tom Werkmeister was the defending champion and held six WMA titles, three short of Bob Sakocius who currently holds nine titles.

In the first round, Tom got off to a great start in defending his title, shooting a round of 70 but trailed Bob Sakocius and Michael Zoerhoff who both shot rounds of 69. Bob and Michael both slipped a bit in the second round while Tom remained steady with a round of 73 but Andrew Yeager would be the leader going into the final round by shooting 69 and a total score of 140 followed by Werkmeister at 143. The final round was a two-man race between Tom and Andrew. Andrew fired a round of 71 but it wouldn’t be good enough as Werkmeister got on a roll and shot 67 to capture his seventh title by one shot. Jim Hegarty captured the “Senior” title with a score of 147, two shots better than Mark Ochsankehl who shot 149.

Congratulations Tom & Jim
