Welcome to Manistee National Golf & Resort Northern Michigan's Best Kept Secret “Two unique choices for passionate golfers, of all skill levels” Lush Green Trees, Lush Green Fairways and a Visit to Remember. Nestled among the pines of the Manistee National Forest in Northern Michigan, you'll find a special, hidden gem, a place that's all about golf. At Manistee National Golf & Resort we offer you two distinctive par-71 courses created by some of Michigan's finest names in golf design. These courses, Canthooke Valley, designed by Gary Pulsipher, and Cutters' Ridge, by Jerry Matthews, together provide 36 holes of
championship-style exciting golf, some of the best playing adventures in the state. The resort is surrounded by Manistee National Forest, formerly a famous lumbering area where millions of white pines were cut down to help build the city of Chicago. In memory of that notable history, we have named our courses to reflect the heritage of the local timber industry. A “canthooke” is a hooking and pulling tool that tree handlers used to roll logs as they were taken down rivers to the lumber mill. A “cutter” was a lumberjack who felled trees.

Bill Zylstra Wins The 27th GAM Senior Championship Belvedere Golf Club-Charlevoix Mi • September 9 & 10, 2013 The first day of the senior championship looked like one of those days where even par was going to be the score but a few players decided to go low and it appears you needed to be from Bloomfield Hills or Grand Blanc. Ian Harris from Bloomfield Hills and the defending champion decided to tackle this old course and turned in a great round of 70, Greg Reynolds from Grand Blanc shot 71 and four other players shot 72. In the Super Senior division John French (Bloomfield Hills) shot a round of 70 fol-
lowed by John Lindholm (Grand Blanc) with 71 and Dave Kempner (Ann Arbor) with 72. Second round action in the senior division found a familiar name storming the course, Bill Zylstra. Bill (Dearborn Heights) is currently the topped ranked senior amateur in the country. Bill started the day three shots behind the leader Ian Harris. Bill turned in a fabulous round of 69 to take control of the championship and a two shot victory over Greg Reynolds from Grand Blanc. Randy Lewis from Alma, who is another great ama-
teur from Michigan, finished third, three shots behind Bill. In the super senior division, the day finished like it began all though the lead bounced back and fourth before John French captured the trophy. John French led by one shot to start the final round over John Lindholm. At the end of the day French & Lindholm both shot 75 giving French a one shot victory.

September 21 was the day of the finals at Indianwood Golf and Country Club. The Fountains Team defeated Gateway to claim the 2013 Publinx Team Championship!

U. S. Senior Amateur Wade Hampton Golf Club • Cashiers, North Carolina • September 21 – 26, 2013 play was Paul Simson (Raleigh N.C.) and Rick Cloninger (Fort Mill, S.C.). From Michigan, Rand Lewis finished tied for ninth with a score of 148, Mike Raymond with 153 and Greg Reynolds at 156. Both Randy and Mike qualified for match play but Greg found himself in a playoff for one of the last spots and was eliminated during the playoff. James Hegarty finished with 158, Dave Kempner with 159 and Michael O’Conner at 168. Round One Match Play: In the first round of match play Lutz cruised to a 4&3 win over Mike Peck from Irving Texas. Randy Lewis and Mike Raymond found their tournament run come to an end losing to Ray Thompson (Drexel Hill PA) 2&1 and Pat O’Donnell (Spring Valley, OR) 1up respectively.
GREG HANSEL The U.S. Senior Amateur got underway at Wade Hampton Golf Club in Cashiers, North Carolina.
Round Two Match Play: Lutz and Hall, two of the top four seeds won their matches but Simson, was eliminated by O’Donnell and Cloninger was beat by Don Erickson III from Dubois PA. Round Three Match Play: When the third round was completed Lutz was the only top seed left in the field and Ray Thompson
turns out to be the sleeper in this year’s field of 64. Ray was the 56th seed and has eliminated Randy Lewis (2&1), Bev Hargraves (5&3) and Brady Exber in 20 holes. Lutz won his third match 3&2 and faced Thompson in the fourth round. Round Four Match Play: Lutz continued to roll and defeated Thompson 4&3 to reach the semi finals where he was joined by Douglas Hanzel (Savannah, Ga.), Pat O’Donnell (Happy Valley, Ore.) and Buzz Fly from Memphis Tn. Lutz will square off with Hanzel and Fly vs. O’Donnell. Round Five Semi Final Match Play: Hanzel came to play in the semi final match and eliminated Lutz 3&2. O’Donnell eliminated Fly 2&1 and faced Hanzel for the title. Round Six Final Match Play: In the final match Hanzel was very steady keeping a slight lead through out the match and eventually closed out O’Donnell 3&2 to claim the championship. Hanzel had a great deal of experience playing in his 20th USGA event and was also the low amateur in the last two U.S. Senior Opens, it surely helped him in claiming his first ever national title!
