or several years, the Hastings band and choir programs have sold poinsettias as a fundraiser. The colorful plants, along with hundreds of tiny lights, are used to decorate the high school gymnasium for the Christmas band and choir collage concerts. Though directors and musicians have changed over the years, the format is the same. This year, however, instead of buying the poinsettias from an outside vendor, Hastings High School students have grown the plants, tending to them over the past several weeks. 1. Once again the American Legion Post 45 & the Military Order of the Purple Heart Local Chapter 110 0 are putting on Christmas Dinner for the 9th year. The dinner will be held at Hastings High School and the Senior Class will be serving and cleaning up. They also need at least 30 adults to help in the kitchen with the hot food, so if you would like to volunteer for an hour Christmas morning, call Bill Roush at 945-2605. They start cooking at 7am and the dinner will be from 1-3pm or until the food is gone. Last year they served over 400 meals to the public. If you don't have someone to eat dinner with this year, come on up to the High School and eat with some of your friends and neighbors. A big “Thank You” to the Senior Class of 2015, the Hastings High School, and to the Veterans who just keep giving and giving. 2. There is still time to help out with the Needy Feet Boot Drive. Many families are in need of boots for their children and this is a great way to clean out our closets of boots no one is wearing and help them at the same time. Your boots, or if you don't have boots and want to donate, can be dropped off or a check mailed to Dr. Mansky at 1127 W. State St. (between McDonald's and Big Boy) in Hastings. The boot drive will continue until December 23 so we have 10 days to fill up his office and help the children of our community keep warm. 3. It's getting closer! Christmas is coming and so is Wise Men's Night Out, Monday, December 21, 5-8pm. Sometimes it's hard to decide on a gift to buy for the women in your life, so this is the night set aside for men to shop and get all the help they need. Come on downtown and let us make that job that feels difficult, a little easier for you. 4. Lakewood Choral Society y proudly presents “Twelve Days Before Christmas Concert”, Sunday December 13 at 3pm at the Lakewood High School fine Arts Auditorium. The concert is open to the public and in lieu of tickets, a free will offering will be taken. Sounds like a fun thing to do 12 days before Christmas. 5. The WBCH One Grand Christmas Shopper Sweepstakes $1000 Giveaway y is underway with Daily prizes leading to a chance to win the $1000 Grand Prize. The Barry County Commission on Aging has invited many local organizations, individuals and businesses to decorate a Christmas wreath, tree, or stocking for the annual Tree, Wreath and Stocking Silent Auction event and those efforts are now on display at the COA on Woodlawn Avenue. You are invited to stop by and bid on them during the Silent Auction (8am until 5pm daily) or online at barrycountycoa. org. Winners will be announced at the annual COA Christmas Party December 17th. All proceeds fund programs for seniors in Barry County. 8. This year again, Dewey's Auto Body presents their annual Christmas Light Show. The light and music show entertains from the side of their building at 1111 West Green Street in Hastings. You can park across the street & enjoy the show (turn your car radio to the station on the sign) from 5-8am (enjoy the show on your way to work) or from 5:30pm-11pm every night. The show is free to all thanks to Dewey's. 9. If you are wishing you had more Christmas ornaments or different lighted ornaments to hang around the house, you need to come in The South Jefferson Street General Store. We have a couple of trees full of ornaments and more beautifully detailed from The Hastings Pewter Company, like the Christmas tree with the Mackinac Bridge at the bottom. We also have lighted snowflakes, nightlights and more to help turn your house into Christmas. One of these days it is going to turn cold and you will want Snoozies s slippers or a warm scarf for yourself or for someone on your list. The Jenna Kator designed in Michigan purses continue to be a hit along with all the Made in Michigan items we carry. We have been very pleased to see people shop local and look for things made in Michigan and in the USA. It's good for everyone. TOP SIX REASONS TO HAVE "THE INHERITANCE TALK" (Part III) Speaking openly with your children about the sensitive topics related to your estate planning and retirement plans can be difficult. After all, your estate plan is an intensively private matter. However, discussing these matters with your children may prevent confusion and resentment in the future. In previous articles, we have discussed some reasons why sharing your estate plan with your children may be a good idea. Here are reasons five and six: 5. Long Term Care and Nursing Home Costs. A good estate plan should include tools for you and your family to deal with the cost of long term care or a nursing home. Nothing brings on more fear or stress than when a child sees the first $10,000 bill for a month in a nursing home. By meeting with a qualified elder law attorney and discussing ways to protect and preserve assets, you will feel better about your ability to deal with long term care and nursing home issues (should they arise). It is imperative, however, that your children know you have addressed this issue with your attorney and what role they will play in protecting and preserving assets should you or your spouse encounter long term care issues. This is a talk the children should certainly appreciate. 6. Organization. We see it happen every week. no idea of the contents. Because “the talk” never happened, the child has little understanding of the estate plan, which papers are important, or the intent of the estate plan. This leads to stress, disorganization, and, frankly, increased legal fees.
