ortunately, it was just a small number of the children that he delivered who greeted Dr. Oscar deGoa this week to honor his retirement from obstetric medicine after a 41-year career. Not that the rest of the more than 7,000 babies he’s delivered in Barry County wouldn’t have wanted to add their own thanks. From the time he arrived at Pennock Health Services Jan. 2, 1973, deGoa established a relaxed, kind and compassionate manner that was always evident in his love for his family and community, as well. Though he retires from a 24/7 discipline that never afforded more than a two-week vacation each year, deGoa now retires to a life in which he wants to give to his church and his community. In typical deGoa fashion, he views his new life as a chance to thank that same community for the opportunities it extended him. Helping begin that celebration with him this week are (from left) Joel Gelderloos, 3; Sandy Faubert, 5; Lily Faubert, 10; Joey Faubert, 12; Alyssa Dipert, 12; Eric Dipert, 9; Evie Faubert, 7; and Lucy Faubert, 3, on deGoa’s knee. Look inside to learn more of the man who helped deliver life to the children of this community and, in turn, to the community itself.

1. Again this year, the January Series of Calvin College will come to the Hastings Public Library. The library will be one of 44 locations worldwide to broadcast the often sold out lecture and cultural arts series from the college. The 27th annual January series will feature a lineup of speakers who are engaged in some of the nation’s most important and timely discussions. The programs are free and you are invited to the library (12-30-1:30) each weekday through January 28. For a complete list of speakers and their topics log on to www.calvin.edu/january or call 616-526-7018. 2. The very talented couple of Kensinger and Alice Jones, both well known for having a “way with words” will again sponsor their annual “Write Away” competition to encourage local students to develop their writing skills and to enter their compositions in a competition with other students garnering cash prizes, appropriate plaques and other recognition of their talents. Categories include poetry, short stories, feature stories and essays. There is still no category for a column about life in a small town, but we are still working on the sponsors to include one. In the meantime, submit your column to the South Jefferson Street News and you may win a $5 gift certificate and we may publish your column as a “guest column” in this Reminder. Details, rules, entry blanks and more information are available at the English Departments of Barry County High Schools or from the Barry Community Foundation, 269945-0526. The entry deadline is February 3, winners will be announced in April. 3. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute will present Chef Richard Centala in “Creating Delicious Desserts” featuring torts, crisps, cakes and poached fruits next Saturday afternoon, January 18, from 3-5 p.m. at the institute. Cost is $15 for members, $18 for non-members. Call 269-7214190 or log on to cedarcreekinstitute.org to register or get more information. 4. The Hastings Public Library Story Times will explore “Barns and Farms” this week using music, stories, crafts and more. The Toddler Story Time for those kids from 18-26 months meets each Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. and the Pre-School Story Time meets for kids ages 3-5 each Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. To find out more about these programs and the many other programs at the library call 269945-4263 or log on to www.hastingspubliclibrary.org. 5. The Movies Memories and Milestone film series at the Hastings Public Library features little known films this month. The presentation this Thursday evening is “Adventure in Baltimore” featuring Shirley Temple, Robert Young and John Agar. The feature and discussion runs from 4:30 until 8 p.m. As usual, this and all library programs are free to all. 6. The Hastings Adventist Community Center serves over 1000 people each year by providing needed clothing, bedding, towels, small furniture and more to those in need. Everything is given without charge or obligation of any kind. The poor economy has increased the need and the center especially needs donations of men’s and boy’s jeans, kid’s socks and bedding in good condition. Those who are in need should visit the center on the corner of Green and East Streets from 8:30 a.m. until noon on Mondays and Wednesdays. Donations are also gratefully accepted during those hours. 7. Two downtown churches in Hastings share their bounty with the community every week. The First United Methodist Church serves a Light Soup Supper every Tuesday from 5-6 p.m. at the church on the corner of Green and Church streets. The Emmanuel Episcopal Church at the corner of Center Street and Broadway in Downtown Hastings serves a hot protein rich breakfast every Saturday morning from 8 until 9:30 a.m. Both meals are open to all. Donations are accepted by not necessary. 8. January is National Pie Month and one of the feature events is the annual Mike Smith South Jefferson Street Pie Contest. You are invited to enter your best homemade pie in the competition. When you enter you get a $5 gift certificate and a bag of Medbug Caramel Corn. Mikey will judge the entries (with our help) and declare a winner. If Mikey likes your pie best, you get another $5. If you don’t win, better luck next year. If you think Mikey was unfair in his judging, playing favorites, bake another pie and play the “pie in the face” with him. Those of you tempted to dismiss this contest as unworthy of your pie making skills should be aware that former contestants have gone on to fame and fortune at such prestigious events as the Barry County Fair, Hastings Summerfest, the Charlton Park 4th of July Celebration, the Michigan State Fair and beyond. 9. Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S DESK I would like to take this opportunity to say that I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday season. It was a unique holiday season with the power outage, and one I am sure we will not soon forget. I would also like to say thank you to the community and parents for your continued support of our school district. Our district will continue to move forward this semester. The district has started the process of searching for a new superintendent and will be seeking input from all stakeholder groups along the way. The Hastings Area School System will continue to move forward with strategic planning, Capturing Kid’s Hearts training, and other important district initiatives as the search proceeds. Again, thank you for all you do for our children and community. Chris Cooley Interim Superintendent Hastings Area School System

NOTIFICATION OF MANDATORY SPECIAL EDUCATION ACT Public Act 198 of 1971, the Mandatory Special Education Act, establishes the right of persons with disabilities, from birth through the age of 25, to equal opportunity within the public schools. THIS MEANS THAT CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES DO NOT NEED TO WAIT UNTIL THEY ARE SCHOOL AGE TO BENEFIT FROM SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES. It is important that help be obtained for those with disabilities at the earliest possible age. In the State of Michigan, this help is free and available through your public schools. A team of educational specialists evaluates the child to determine the type and degree of disability and the best program placement. This evaluation often includes medical specialists.

Pre-primary Special Education services are available for the: MENTALLY IMPAIRED EMOTIONALLY IMPAIRED PHYSICALLY AND OTHERWISE HEALTH IMPAIRED (POHI) HEARING IMPAIRED VISUALLY IMPAIRED SPEECH AND LANGUAGE IMPAIRED SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABLED So, if you have, or know of, a pre-school child who may benefit from these services, call: Matt Goebel, Director of Curriculum and Instruction 232 W. Grand Street Hastings, MI 49058 269-948-4400

NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY Hastings Area Schools does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, religion, height, weight, marital or family status, military status, ancestry, genetic information or any other legally protected category, (collectively, “Protected Classes”), in its programs and activities, including employment opportunities. If you feel you have been the victim of such discrimination, please contact the district's compliance officer: Director of Curriculum and Instruction Hastings Area School System 232 West Grand Street • 269-948-4400

Watch D.O.G.S. come to Hastings Elementary Schools The watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) national program began this fall at Central Elementary and North Eastern Elementary Schools. The program is designed to bring positive male role models into schools. Dads, or any other positive male role model sign up to spend a day in classrooms, helping in the cafeteria and playgrounds. Over 60 dads have signed up between Central and Northeastern. Star Elementary and Southeastern Elementary hope to have the program running in their buildings soon. From Left to Right, Kaila Gillespie, Bridget Thayer, Lily Hyatt, Brandon Miner, Shianne Hinckley, Konrad Hester, Student representatives from Mrs. Letot's and Mr. Nauta's first hour classrooms. Once again, the Hastings Middle School staff and students held their annual Food Drive. The Saxon Pride Club organizes the food drive, packs up the food and delivers it to the food bank at the United Methodist Church where it is used to help feed local families. Money is also collected each year to help out charities. This year, Middle School students and staff collected enough to donate $300 in Walmart gift cards to help local families buy toys for their kids. Pet food was also purchased for the Barry County animal shelter and $200 was donated to St. Jude's Children's hospital. Any remaining money will be used to purchase school supplies for kids in need.

State Choir Natalie Anderson, Hannah LaJoye, Ariel Leonhardt, and George Murphy - members of the HHS Varsity Singers have been accepted through auditions to participate in the 2014 state honors choir. This is a very competitive competition that involves 1500+ pre-qualified students across the state of Michigan. Only about 300 students get the honor of participating at this state event. The Michigan Music Conference will be held from January 16th and January 18th at the DeVos Center. The public is welcome to attend. Natalie Anderson participated in this group last year and also received the best in state honors for her high audition scores.

SOUTHEASTERN NEWS

Pictured Left to Right: Abigail Peake, Store Manager Scott Larson, Zoey Bennett, Principal Judy Johnson, Madilynn Peake.

We are very lucky to have Grandma Amy at Southeastern! She is a member of the Michigan Foster Grandparent Program. Grandma is very special to the students because she has a talent many people her age don't...... she loves technology. When you need a good "app" for reading she is the “GO-TO” girl in the building. Principal Judy Johnson says that there are many evenings that she stays up late at night to search for that "Special Book" that a child will love. Her passion is seeing the children grow and learn. She is the first person at my door when a child is in need of something. Grandma works with Mrs. Griggs everyday and together they touch the lives of each and every one they meet. Pictured below is Grandma Amy with first grader Alyssa Hartman. They are reading books on the computer.

Excellence, Desire, Pride The 2013 Thornapple Kellogg/Hastings Girls' Co-op Swimming & Diving Team swam and dove to a "Three-Peat" this season. For the third year in a row, the dedication and very hard work of the girls resulted in the Team winning every dual meet and taking first place in every invitational, and capturing its third OK Rainbow II Conference Championship! During this year's 11 win season, the girls established six school records, one pool record, one conference record, had six girls awarded AllConference honors, and qualified for the Division I state meet in three events. The Team motto is "EXCELLENCE, DESIRE, PRIDE" and the girls showed all of those traits not only in their athletic record, but also in their outstanding academic, citizenship, and sportsmanship accomplishments!

Southeastern Elementary was the recipient of a grant from the Wal Mart Corporation. This grant will be used to help teachers supplement the curriculum with much needed supplies and materials. This very generous gift is a blessing to the staff and students at Southeastern! Beth Peake, a parent of two of our students, took on this task and worked with the management at our local store. The students at South created a huge Thank You card to display at the store.

From the Socktober website There are 600,000 people without a home on any given night in the United States. SOULPANCAKE and KID PRESIDENT want one million people to prove that even the smallest acts of love, like donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of the homeless!

This week, Mrs. Breckon's 5th grade class visited Mrs. Mosely and Mrs. Kietzman's kindergarten class. With books in tow, the fifth grader chose two little buddies to read to. Each Monday, the kindergartners and fifth graders will be pairing up and hope to eventually have the kindergartners reading to the fifth graders.

Start a new sock drive! Better yet, gather up socks and other basic essentials your local shelter might need as they prepare for winter. Never connected with your local shelter? Star School Fifth Graders collected 361 pairs of new socks to donate to the homeless and others in need. The idea came from watching a video of Kid President, who challenged kids to use the internet for good and gave the idea of collecting socks. The initiative was called Socktober. Mrs. Carlson and Mrs. Secord’s classes set a goal of one pair of socks for each kid in the two classes. That goal was met on the first week so the goal was increased to the equivalent of one pair of socks for every student in their entire school. The Student Council got involved and donated $50 from recent lunchtime pencil sales, the many students from other grades participate and WalMart in Hastings also chipped in with a generous gift card to help the students reach their goal. The classes will now decide where they will donate these new socks.

The High School PTO is hosting the first Hastings High School Expo on March 8, 2014 from 8 am to 5 pm. There will be a silent auction; vendor/craft booths; food; and a garage sale. Funds from this event will support several organizations within the high school, support classroom supplies and start raising funds to replace lockers! Your support is greatly needed … we are looking for silent auction items and Craft Vendors along with donations for our used items at the garage sale. Thank you for all your support and sharing this information with family and friends! Any questions on this event or how you can be supportive, please contact Mary Rivett. mrivett@hastingsmfg.com or 269948-4022 after 6 pm.
