ince 1995, the Barry Community Foundation has shown charitable donors that giving is investing. By matching donor interests with community needs, the BCF has helped investors to not only address community needs but to also see the growth and change that comes from the charitable investments they’ve made. This week’s issue of the Reminder profiles four donors whose investments are making powerful, positive and personal changes in Barry County. Mayor May was a dedicated public servant throughout his life. A decorated Viet Nam vet, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Nashville VFW, also a member and past commander of American Legion Post 45 in Hastings, and the current commander of the Sons of the Legion. Over the years Bob's kind and gentle spirit impacted the lives of so many in our community, and he supported the youth of Hastings. Bob has always been very active in the Boy Scouts of America, first as a scout, then as a leader. In 2003 the Boy Scouts presented him with an award for saving a woman from drowning. Bob was extremely generous with his time and was a member of the Hastings Kiwanis Club, the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings and was awarded the Book of Golden Deeds in 2008. He also participated in the March of Dimes Walk for Babies and Relay for Life and was honored with the Robert L. May Humanitarian Award from the American Cancer Society. Hastings City Hall will be closed from approximately 10am to 2pm Monday, Oct. 22, to allow city employees to attend the funeral. Services will be at 11am Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 405 N. “Mayor Bob” served faithfully on the Hastings City Council for over 20 years. He was appointed as mayor pro-tem 2001-03, was elected mayor in 2004 and reelected in 2008. He loved serving and promoting the City of Hastings and was well known for being an aggressive advocate on behalf of Michigan communities with the legislators in Lansing. He was recognized as the Advocate of the Year 2008 by the Michigan Association of Mayors.

Newsprint prices have increased exponentially as has the price of ink and the gasoline we use to receive supplies and to deliver your free newspaper. As a publishing company, our efforts have always been to ensure these community treasures. In the face of the financial challenge that every newspaper nationwide is experiencing, we have increased our debt exposure by nearly $500,000 to a level that’s now testing financial prudence. We remain loyal to the importance newspapers have in supporting our communities. We cover it all: weddings, births, graduations, and deaths; local sports and school events of all types; church notices and events; community celebrations.
