ood clean fun? Not so much. A fun and festive familyfriendly event for a good cause? Definitely. People of all ages looking for a challenge are invited to participate in Pennock Health Services’ “Dirty Dozen,” a mile long minimud-run/obstacle course featuring a 50-yard “Monster Dash,” an 80-foot slip and slide, roof climb, and more, including lots of mud – lots and lots of mud. Taking a trial run through the course earlier this week are Jon Anderson (foreground) and Gary Reedy. Look inside this edition of The Reminder for more information and how you can join in the fun by tackling the “Dirty Dozen” and, at the same time, raise money for the Barry County United Way.

1. The 46th annual Christmas Presentation of the Pennock Hospital PennNook Gift Shop is this week, Wednesday through Friday in the Pennock Hospital Conference Center. Show hours are 8am until 6pm on Wednesday & Thursday and from 8am until 1pm on Friday. This year, as they do every year, the PennNook buyers make a special effort to purchase unique gifts & decorations for your holiday giving, many of which are hard to find. The sale features something for everyone – men, women & kids, including gifts not found anywhere else in the area. You can enjoy homemade treats & coffee while you shop and you should make plans to lunch in the Pennock Cafeteria. On Wednesday only, the sale will feature an extensive collection of Gold Standard Jewelry from which you can select a special gift for your loved one. Profits from the gift shop are used by the sponsoring guilds to provide needed services at the hospital. 2. YAC, the Barry Community Foundation Youth Advisory Council will sponsor their annual Roof Sit next Saturday (November 3) in front of Second Hand Corners in Downtown Hastings. They will be collecting some bucks to benefit Navigate, the Barry County College Access Network. Members of YAC will sit from 9am until 3pm on scaffolding provided by the great folks at Barry County Lumber. YAC is open to youths ages 13-21 and its mission is to represent the youthful voices of Barry County to better the lives of our generation and the generations that follow. YAC gives away mini-grants (under $300) throughout the year and major grants each fall & spring. You can stop by the Roof Sit and drop off a donation or you can mail a donation to them at the Barry Community Foundation. For more information call 269-945-0526. 3. The formerly twice a year Pasty Sale by the Sarah Circle of Grace Lutheran Church has become an annual event and this is your only chance to get pasties this year. They follow a time honored “Yooper Recipe” that has been in the family for many, many years. Don’t get left out, order this very special treat now, before the supply runs out. Prices are $5.75 for a baked pasty, $5.25 for one unbaked. Call 269-945-9939 to place an order. Pick up day is November 10 at the church. 4. Y acts about your Oral Health Sponsored by Nancy K. McClear, D.D.S.
Protect Your Child’s Teeth from Harm on Halloween More than 90 percent of children go trick or treating and return home with bags full of sugary candy that can turn anyone’s mouth into a nightmare. By taking preventive steps, however, children can enjoy Halloween without harming their teeth. Recognizing that candy consumption is almost unavoidable at this time of the year, the Academy of General Dentistry recently issued a press release which rated the best and worst Halloween candy options for children’s teeth. Best: 1. Sugar-free lollipops and hard candies: These treats stimulate saliva, which prevents dry mouth. A dry mouth allows plaque to build up on teeth faster, leading to an increased risk of cavities. 2. Sugar-free gum: Chewing gum can actually prevent cavities, not only because it helps to dislodge food particles from the teeth, but also because it increases saliva. Saliva works to neutralize the acids of the mouth and prevent tooth decay. 3. Dark chocolate: Chocolates are loaded with sugar, but studies have shown that the antioxidants in dark chocolate can be good for the heart and may even lower blood pressure. Just be sure to eat it in moderation. Worst: 1. Chewy/sticky sweets: Gummy candies, taffy, and even dried fruit can be difficult for children and adults to
resist, but they are a serious source of tooth decay, particularly when they get stuck in the crevices between teeth and make it nearly impossible for saliva to wash away. 2. Sour candies: High acid levels in these treats can break down tooth enamel quickly. 3. Sugary snacks: Candy corn, cookies, and cake all contain a high amount of sugar, which can cause tooth decay. So closely monitor your child’s candy intake this Halloween—and all year round—and continue to promote good oral health habits. Information Courtesy of the Academy of General Dentistry

To our readers: During the past three weeks, we have approached you with a request for assistance in helping us meet the threatening challenges of continuing to publish a free circulation newspaper for our community. We don’t face these challenges alone. Throughout the nation, newspapers are struggling, have dramatically changed their formats, or have goine out of business entirely due to production costs, declining revenue from advertisers, and the changing ways in which people choose to access their news today. Your response to our appeal has been overwhelming and touching. We’ve received over 2,000 responses in just the first week following distribution of our “voluntary subscription” envelopes. Along with financial contributions came words of kindness, appreciation, and encouragement. “The Reminder has been a valuable and useful weekly event at my home as long as I can remember,” wrote Ruth Kosbar. “For many reasons, it would be missed if it did not arrive.” We can’t think of better words to describe how we feel about our mission than those. We’ve always considered our work to be a weekly celebration of what’s good and great about Barry
County. Whether it’s a wedding announcement, a school play, or a youngster who presented his piggy bank savings to the local food bank, we’re here to commemorate those joys in our “community scrapbook.” As diverse as our interests, vocations, and hobbies are, the newspaper is what connects a community. We thank you for your positive financial response to our appeal and look forward to serving you as that valued community connection. For those who may just be learning of our “voluntary subscription” program and still wish to be a part of it, we offer the attached form below. You’re also welcome to stop by our office to pick up a giving envelope if you've lost or misplaced yours or to make your donation. We’ll be happy, of course, to get you an envelope if you’d like to call us at 269-945-9554. Thank you for being such a wonderful community about which we celebrate each week. John Jacobs, President Fred Jacobs, Vice President Stephen Jacobs, Secretary/Treasurer J-Ad Graphics, Inc.
