The Christmas Season begins in Hastings next weekend as the Hastings Holiday Hoop celebrates with a host of activities on Friday evening from 5 until 9 p.m. including a Christmas Village with Santa and Elves serving Hot Chocolate, caroling around town, free Victorian Horse Drawn Carriage Rides sponsored by Bosley Pharmacy and the County Seat, gift wrapping, dedication of the manager on the Courthouse Square and Christmas Tree Lighting at Hastings City Hall. Many Downtown businesses will have open houses and extended shopping hours. Check out the schedule of events in this Reminder and enjoy the start of the Holiday. 2. The annual Barry County Christmas Parade, “Joy to the World” marches through Downtown Hastings next Saturday afternoon (December 1) beginning at 2 p.m. and you are invited to come Downtown and participate in the fun. The Grand Marshal of this year’s parade is Steve Reid. After the parade bring your camera to the Hastings Public Library and take pictures of the kids with Santa. The parade will feature a special appearance by the “Medbug” and the “Racing Medbug” and will conclude with the arrival of the “big guy” himself. Parade information and entry forms are available at the Barry County Chamber of Commerce in Downtown Hastings or by calling 945-2454. 3. The Hastings Public Library presents the 3rd annual Art at the Library featuring gifts made by local artists for one of a kind gift giving. The same night the library cooks up the 6th annual Taste of the Holidays featuring your chance to try some holiday treats and to take home the recipe to share with family and friends. The Thornapple Garden Club will be selling freshly cut wreaths, baked goods and crafts. All of this fun takes place at the Hastings Public Library in Downtown Hastings from 5-8 p.m. next Friday evening. Throughout this Holiday Weekend you can enjoy the Thornapple Players production of “Miracle on 34th Street,” at the Barry Enrichment Center (Leason Sharpe Hall) in Downtown Hastings. Performances include a 7 p.m. dress rehearsal on Thursday evening ($5), other shows are Friday at 7, Saturday at 3 and 7 and Sunday at 2. As the Christmas Season approaches remember that the Barry County United Way Campaign, Live United is coming to a close. If you have not yet contributed, now is the time to get involved. To our readers: In the past few weeks, as we’ve appealed for your help with a voluntary subscription program that will help us maintain free circulation of the Reminder, the Maple Valley News, the Lakewood News, and the Sun and News, your response has been heartwarming. Not only did readers who understand the dire challenges facing newspapers in every community in America send or drop off their checks and cash, more importantly they took the time to tell us how they value the papers that come to them free each week. Everyday they continue to provide their financial assistance and written suggestions. That was a daunting challenge to us. Other than comments from readers who might be personally involved in a news article, we seldom hear from the wide community as we did in this voluntary subscription project in terms of how we are doing our job. The greatest fear for us was that no one would respond, that public apathy may indeed be causing the demise of the printed word. Not in Barry County and the neighborhoods that border it. “We’re happy to help, the Reminder has been an important part of our lives for many years,” wrote one reader. Another even helps our papers go nationwide. From left, Stephen Jacobs, John Jacobs, Fred Jacobs. “I read the Reminder as I travel on the airplane,” she said, “and many people ask to read it after I’m done.” We received hundreds of comments like that one, most that came in with a check. Newspaper polling firms tell us that a 1% return on a request for reader input or assistance is an average response rate. Ours exceeded 10% and our newspaper colleagues are astounded by our response. We’re not. We know our readers value our papers and your assistance in the voluntary subscription project has helped us reach these conclusions and considerations of even more reader-suggested changes: • Our readers value our free circulation service and are willing to give with they can to help us maintain it. We wish we would have raised more with the voluntary subscription request but, this year, it’s enough to help us maintain operations as they are. • Several suggestions were made that we combine the Sun and News, the Lakewood News, and the Maple Valley News into the paid-circulation Hastings Banner and sell it for $1. That may be a viable solution in the future. • Readers value county news but really appreciate even more local coverage. We’re seeking part-time reporters who may be interested in helping provide news and photos in Delton, Lakewood, and Caledonia, especially. • We’re preparing a detailed analysis of our reader responses. Though we’re not certain how those will be reported, we’d like interested readers to see them, either as part of the newspaper or part of a separate report that would be available upon request. We’ve always believed that a newspaper is a part of the community. Our voluntary subscription request has brought the community to us. We are going to respond to your ideas, suggestions, and inspirations. Above all, we thank you for helping us not only to survive as a business, but to reach new heights as a community resource.
