The run, held rain, snow or sun, will feature 11 obstacles on a 1K course behind the high school. The Barry County Walk for Warmth, sponsored by Community Action Agency will kick off next Saturday, February 23 from the Barry Community Enrichment Center at the corner of Broadway and Court in Downtown Hastings. Registration for the 28th running of the walk begins at 9am, the one mile walk starts at 9:30 and the walk events start at 10am. During this cold weather and the hard economic times we are experiencing, more of our neighbors than ever need help with their fuel bills. You may walk alone or gather friends & family to form a team to collect pledges and walk in the event. Your participation is much appreciated and you can be assured that funds raised in Barry County are used to help residents of Barry County only. Walkers will be eligible for door prizes, snacks and get a chance to socialize with other community members while walking the march. Pledge sheets are available at local businesses (Bosley Pharmacy has some) or at the Community Action Agency in Hastings, or, you can call 1-877-422-2726 or log on to www.caasem.org. Spay Day is Tuesday, February 26 and you have a chance to get a free $20 off coupon to help pay to have your pet spayed or neutered, good at any local veterinarian. Unwanted litters lead to hundreds of dogs & cats being put to sleep yearly at the Barry County Animal Center. Make plans now to participate in the Winter Tree Identification Hike next Saturday, February 23, from 10am until noon. This is one of the last Outdoor Events at Pierce this winter. Participants will hike 1.5 miles through a variety of forest types. Despite the lack of leaves, trees can still be identified by their buds and bark. Come dressed for the weather and if there is enough snow, bring your snowshoes. Cost is free for members, $6 for non-members. The Hastings Public Library Toddler Story Time (Tuesdays 10:30am) and the Pre-School Story Time (Fridays 10:30am) will both use stories, music, songs & crafts to discover what life is like “On The Farm.” The Movie Memories feature presentation this Thursday evening, 5-8pm is from this month’s Tough Man Series, “Golden Earrings,” a romantic spy film from 1947 starring Ray Milland, Marlene Dietrich and Murvyn Vye. 5. Every second & fourth Saturday from January to April, The Gilmore Car Museum will present “Behind the Scenes at the Gilmore Car Museum,” an intimate look at their collections. You can participate in guided tours by the museum staff, educational lectures, kids activities and an up close & very personal peek inside their most impressive cars, all for the regular price of admission. If you are a low-to-moderate single income, family, senior or disabled the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program) (sponsored by the IRS) is available to you through the YMCA of Barry County at no charge. As you may remember, a group of local citizens and the City of Hastings built Tangle Town, a play structure located in Bob King Park. To help in the maintenance of Tangle Town, the City of Hastings is again selling pickets to raise funds for the park. You can buy a picket with the name of your group, a loved one, a pet or other organization to be installed with the hundreds of pickets already there. The cost is $30 for each picket and the funds raised will be used only in maintaining and improving the park. For more information call 945-2461. 8. Northern hemisphere Hoodie-Hoo Day is February 20. You are invited to go outside at high noon and yell hoodie-hoo as loud as you can and you are invited to do so from the South Jefferson Street Stage (the soapbox) this day to chase away winter and make ready for spring. Do so, and you get a $3 gift certificate and bag of road salt. (Limit 3) 9. Pulitzer prize winning poet W.H. Auden was born on this day (February 21) in 1907. He passed away in 1973.
