1. The bright lights, the glamour, the excitement and the thrill of attending a Broadway Show is among the greatest enjoyments we can have in our lifetime. Lucky for us, the excitement of a Broadway play comes to Broadway in Hastings as the talented students of Hastings High School present the musical comedy “The Music Man” with book, music & lyrics by Meredith Wilson, and directed by the dynamic duo of Todd Willard & Matt Callaghan. All performances are presented in Central Auditorium on South Broadway Street in Hastings. The curtain goes up at 7pm next Thursday, Friday & Saturday evening with a Sunday afternoon performance at 3pm. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students & seniors and they are available at Bosley Pharmacy, Family Fare, King’s Appliances and all Hastings area schools. Or, you can make a grand entrance atop the South Jefferson Stage (the soapbox) this week and sing a song from the show and we will buy you a pair of tickets to the performance of your choice. 2. The Thornapple Players will present the “Ed Sullivan Show” at the Hastings Elks Lodge today (Saturday) and tomorrow with performances by over 15 performers from “The Andrews Sisters” to the “Beatles.” The show is open to the public and tickets are $17 including dinner and the show. All proceeds support the Hastings Elks Scholarship Fund. 3. Now open in Downtown Hastings is the new “City Apparel” featuring a bunch of new merchandise including the latest fashions for men and women. They have plenty of new outfits for spring. The store is located at 131 W. State Street and is open Mon.-Sat. from 10-5:30. 4. This Friday is your monthly chance to give blood at the Michigan Blood Drive to be held at the Pennock Hospital Conference Room from 10am until 5pm. You can make an appointment at 1-866MIBLOOD or at www.miblood.org. Visit Bosley Pharmacy after you give and get a free bag of Medbug Caramel Corn and a candy bar as our thanks for your donation. 5. The Cinema 4 Theater in Downtown Hastings begins its series of Free Spring Movies (9 weekends) this Saturday and Sunday at 9am & 10am each day. Next week’s feature is “Dairy of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days.” Tickets are free to all, Classic Kids Combos and Healthy Kids Combos are available. 6. The Lake Odessa Museum will exhibit “It’s Art!” a unique exhibit featuring historical & current works of art today (February 23) and Sunday (February 24) at the Museum, 1117 Emerson in Lake Odessa. Admission is free. “Come & See - Art is Alive in Lake O.” 7. The Freeport Fire Department will flip flap jacks this morning (Saturday) from 7am until 11am at the fire station in Freeport. They will serve pancakes, eggs, sausage, OJ, coffee & milk for a free-will donation. The department’s equipment will be on display and any money raised will be used to finish completion of the new utility/brush truck. 8.The Toddler Story Time Tuesday 10:30am and the Pre-School Story Time Friday 10:30am at the Hastings Public Library will discuss Pizza, Pizza, Pizza using stories, books, songs & crafts to explore the subject of pizzas. 9. The movie memory presentation this Thursday 5-8pm at the Hastings Public Library features “The Time Machine” (1960) starring Rod Taylor, Alan Young & Yvette Mimieux. The movie, a science fiction film, was produced and directed by George Pal. The feature is free to all. 10. The annual St. Patrick’s Day Beard Growing Contest starts now and continues until March 17. It’s time to get fuzzy for the annual parade and when you can match the other beard growers in the parade we will all get ready to show. Start today and let ‘er grow. Do your best between now & parade day, then climb atop the “blarney stone” (the soapbox) and model your growth for us. The judges (a furry group themselves) will judge your effort and award prizes for the scrawniest, fullest, best effort, most colorful, best use of mustache wax, softest & more. Winners get a $5 gift certificate, a tube of mustache wax, a pair of mustache scissors & a Medbug T-shirt. Losers get a disposable razor & a tube of shave cream.
