harlton Park curator and exhibit coordinator Claire Johnston hangs a display case displaying artifacts from the park’s collection and adding dimension to the traveling exhibit from the Michigan Women’s Historical Center and Hall of Fame in Lansing entitled “Resourceful Women: 30 Women Who Worked to Preserve Michigan’s Water, Woods, and Wildlife.” In addition, Johnson has put together a display honoring women who have played a role in conservation in Barry County. The exhibit, which will begin with a public opening reception at Charlton Park beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, will run through Sunday, June 16. Former Michigan senator and current West Michigan director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters Patricia Birkholz will speak in the Carlton Center Church, located in the historic village followed by light refreshments in the exhibition space. 1. The cooperation of the Thornapple Arts Council, Joy LaJoye and the ever more popular Thornapple Jazz Orchestra and many other groups and individuals in our town, the 10th annual Thornapple Arts Council Jazz Festival next weekend in Hastings, both downtown and around town, promises to be better and bigger than ever. The Opening Night Concert is next Thursday evening (7:30 p.m.) at the First Presbyterian Church on M-37 just north of Hastings. The concert will feature our own “Barry County House Band,” the Thornapple Jazz Orchestra, with guest artist Tom Hagen, under the direction of Joe LaJoye. The concert is free but an offering will be accepted to help the TJO support their Jazz Scholarship program and other worthwhile projects by this great group. 2. On Friday, the festival moves to Downtown Hastings and our town swings as never before with performances by over 80 different high school jazz bands, jazz choirs, adult/college ensembles and professional and amateur bands from throughout the state. Performances are free to all. 3. Friday also features performances by Steel Drum Bands in the Barry Community Enrichment Center ending with a 6:30 p.m. concert by festival headliner Jim Coviak and Friends Caribbean Jazz Band. The concert is free. 4. Also on Friday, at the Barry Community Foundation Hall, a group of nine Vocal Jazz Ensembles will perform from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., followed by Mass Choir Rehearsal at 4:30 pm. in Central Auditorium. 5. The Friday night headliner concert features a performance by the celebrated band and vocal quartet, The Four Freshman! The group’s unique blend of vocal ability and instrumental prowess has kept them on top since 1948. The current line-up has been playing together since 2001. Tickets can be purchased at the TAC for this concert or you can climb atop the South Jefferson Street Jazz Stage and play us a couple of jazzy tunes for all to enjoy and we will buy you a ticket to the show. (Limit 10) 6. The Jazz Festival continues on Saturday with more Jazz Bands playing throughout the day and evening in Downtown Hastings, closing with the Festival Finale Concert in Central Auditorium (doors open at 6 p.m., the concert begins at 7 p.m.) featuring performances by the Middle School All-Star Band, the High School All-Star Band, the Holland Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Brian Cook, director of jazz studies at Hope College. The orchestra is made up of professionals, semi-professionals, and talented community members, all of whom perform with a like-minded purpose – bring the best of historic jazz and contemporary jazz music to the public. Tickets are on sale at the TAC. If you can again play a couple of jazzy tunes from the soapbox this week, we will buy you a ticket to the show. (Limit 10) 7. During lunch on Friday and evenings on Friday and Saturday, the Seasonal Grille, Fall Creek Restaurant, Walldorff Brewpub and Bistro and the the County Seat Lounge and Restaurant will feature professional jazz performances featuring a wide selection of jazz bands. In addition to hosting many jazz bands during the Jazz Festival, the Hastings Public Library this week will present Toddler Story Time (Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.) and Preschool Story Time (Friday at 10:30 a.m.) with “Rainbow Stories.” The Movie Memories series for April continues with thrillers and chillers, a showing of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train” starring Farley Granger, Ruth Roman and Robert Walker. 9. Pierce Cedar Creek will serve their Sunday Brunch next Sunday (April 14) with seatings at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Pre-payment and registrations are required and can be made by calling 269-721-4198 or by logging on to www.cedarcreekinstitute.org. The brunch program at 12:15 the same day is free (you need not attend the brunch to attend the brunch program) featuring Otterly Wild: Otters from North America to Africa with otter expert Jan Reed-Smith sharing her knowledge and experience working with otters in both Africa and North America. Next Saturday (April 13) you can celebrate spring with the institute by participating in the Spring Exploration Walk from 1-3 p.m. This will be a family event (perfect for 5-12 year old kids) that will focus on amphibians, with craft activities inside and a short walk to look and listen for frogs in one of their ponds. Members and children are free, non-member adults are $6. Pre-registration is required at the above numbers. 10. The Free Spring Movies presented by the Hastings 4 Theater in Downtown Hastings continue this week with showings of “Hotel Transylvania” today and tomorrow at 9 and 10 a.m. Next week’s movie is “The Pirates.” Admission is free to all. Kid Combos (Classic Kids, Healthy Kids) are for sale at the concession stand. There is an intermission during each movie to accommodate the kids. 11. The Thornapple Valley Church is taking Project referrals (due by April 12) for their annual Spring Blitz to be held on May 11. On that day, church volunteers supply free labor to local agencies and people who have spring projects to complete.
