ike the putts they’ve sent moving in the same direction, committee members for the 27th annual Chamber Open sponsored by the Barry County Chamber of Commerce are excited about the course that local business development is taking. The June 7 event, scheduled for the Hastings Country Club where committee members recently practiced their putting games, is the chamber’s one and only fundraiser for its annual operational budget and truly models the concept of community with the numerous golfers and businesses that participate. Rooting on their birdie putts are committee members (from left) Carol Vogt, Lynn Janson, Tal Gearhart, Patrick Buckland, Valerie Byrnes, Marge Kesler, Tammy Daniels, Stacey Graham, Kristin Royston and Sarah Price.

1. Next Friday is the Class of 2013 Graduation Night and, as our graduates leave school and go about making their way in the world they face an economy, that, while improving, is very tough, where jobs are hard to find, the cost of college is increasing to the point of being unaffordable, and the ever present threat of war and terrorism still exists. Be that as it may, the graduates we know in this year’s class still seem eager to be on their way, optimistic about the future and convinced that they can make a difference, in fact, that they can conquer the world. While the challenges facing this year’s class seem to be overwhelming, the capacity of the graduating students to face those challenges is, in our opinion, well within their abilities whether they go on to college, enter the military or become part of the work force. It is our belief that they can and will make a difference. All of us on South Jefferson Street congratulate our local graduates and their parents on this very special occasion and wish you only the best. If you are graduating this year, visit Bosley Pharmacy this week and get a $3 gift certificate and a bag of Medbug Caramel Corn. Wear your cap and gown and get another $2. Our special congratulations to Matt Cooley who is graduating from the official college of Bosley Pharmacy, Ferris State University, after working at Bosley’s starting in high school and throughout his college years. 2. The annual Michigan Week Mayor Exchange Day is next Wednesday in Hastings and we will welcome the Mayor and other city officials from Portland, and treat them to a tour of our great city. We have much in our community that is good to share & show off and, as you see our visitors traveling through town, be sure to welcome them to Hastings, shake a hand and offer any assistance that they might need, proving to all again the truth of our slogan, “Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be.” 3. The 126th annual Hastings High School Alumni Banquet is two weeks from today, June 1. Tickets are reasonably priced at $15 in advance at Bosley Pharmacy or by calling 269-945-2790. Or, you can climb atop the South Jefferson Street Podium (the soapbox) this week and lead the crowd in a cheer for HHS or sing the HHS Fight Song and we will buy you a ticket to the banquet. (Limit 4). The banquet is open to all HHS graduates & their guests with class activities scheduled throughout the day followed by a punch bowl happy hour at 4:30 and the program and banquet at 5:30. Some tickets may be available at the door. For more information call Donna Brown at 269-948-2790. 4. When you talk about sporting goods, the special place in Hastings is Al & Pete’s Sport Shop on South Jefferson Street, the heart of Downtown Hastings. The shop is owned & staffed by local sportsmen who really know their stuff and next Saturday they will sponsor their annual Opening Day Bass Contest open to all sportsmen. Sign up by the end of the day Friday, weigh in by 5pm Saturday. Everyone gets a prize. While you are visiting the shop, check out their great selection of fishing & hunting equipment. Get contest details at 945-4417 or use the tournament as an excuse to stop in the store and get the lowdown from Pete or Jeff. 5. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute will feature Basil, Basil, Basil next Wednesday, May 22, a course in using basil as you cook and using basil in gardens. The program will hand out recipes and many food samples including four different varieties of basil for your garden. The program will be taught by Connie Hanson of Grandshire Farm from 6:30 until 8pm. Cost is $20 for members, $25 for non-members. To find out more or make a reservation call 269-721-4190 or log on to www.cedarcreekinstitute.org. 6. The Hastings Public Library will feature “Goldilocks & the Three Bears” this week during Toddler Story Time (Tuesday morning 10:30am) and Pre-School Story Time (Friday morning 10:30am). The Movie Memories feature this Thursday 5-8pm is “Rope” (1948) starring Jimmy Stewart & Farley Granger and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Admission is free and open to all. 7. The annual Charlton Park Day Celebration is next Saturday, May 25 from 11am until 4pm at the park. Admission is free to all and the day is held in honor of the Barry County residents who have supported Historic Charlton Park for the past 77 years. Annual Charlton Park Summer Event & Recreation Program — A Message from Our Director — Dear Friends, Spring has finally arrived! With the warmer temperatures and newness in the air, all of us here at Charlton Park are excited about the upcoming summer season. Additionally, we are enthusiastic about a couple of processes we have going on at the Park right now. Since mid-February our staff and board have been working on developing a Strategic Plan and updating the 5-year Master Plan. Both of these processes will guide what we do into the future on a short and long-term basis. The Strategic Plan will focus on visioning for our future. With a process that focuses on the Collections, Village, Museum, Recreation Area, and Administration, it will truly be all encompassing. The end product will give us guidance for better governance of our resources and sustainability of the Park for enjoyment by future generations. The Master Plan is primarily focused on the parks and recreational component of Historic Charlton Park. This particular planning process is required to be done every five years, to ensure our eligibility for grants and other funding mechanisms. It focuses on environmental-based activities like swimming, trails & hiking, boating, and things that get people outdoors. Ultimately, the Master Plan will provide guidance on future expansion, development, or renovation and improvements within our recreation area, and on the undeveloped portion of Charlton Park.
Like all things, both of these processes are only as good as the information and feedback that is given by those who are willing to give of their time or experiences. We will be conducting surveys, holding public input sessions, and soliciting information many times this year. Charlton Park is also conducting an online community survey to get feedback for further developing our strategic plan. This survey focuses on all aspects of Charlton Park operations and on what visitors want, why they came, and where they are from. I encourage you to visit www.charltonpark.org, and take a few moments to give us your input. This summer, we will be conducting public input meetings seeking information for the Strategic and Master Plans, so please keep us on your radar. As always, you may contact us at any time with an interesting idea or thought regarding our operations or something you would like to see in the future at Historic Charlton Park Village, Museum & Recreation Area. We are eager to get your feedback, so please get involved and help shape our future for years to come. Visit us soon,
Dan Patton, Director
New Programming! Charlton Park is bringing back the Old Fashioned Field Day! One day a month, June 26, July 24, and August 14, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. kids of all ages have a chance to come out and enjoy a morning of cooperative games and field day activities that promote working together, being healthy, and enjoying the outdoors. Rain dates are June 27, July 25, and August 15. Watch the Charlton Park website (www.charltonpark.org) and the Park’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/charltonpark) for more details!
Educators – Bring Your Students To Charlton Park Our education programs are designed to expand student’s knowledge and comprehension of the past. Programs encourage learning through hands-on participation in our 19th century historic village. We provide a personal connection to history that can be adapted to any age or interest level. Irving Charlton strongly believed in the preservation of agricultural and common household objects from the 19th century for the education of future generations. The education programs utilize the buildings and artifacts to bring history alive for your students! Your students will be able to see, listen, touch, smell and feel their way through history! Our most popular programs are Live-In and Down on the
Farm. If you choose the Live-In, students live the life of a child at the turn-of-the century by participating in daily chores and activities. If you choose Down on the Farm, students experience what life may have been like living on a farm in the late 1800’s. You also may select experiences à la carte. Interested? In November 2013, Charlton Park will be offering their programs for FREE to Barry County schools. Visit www.charltonpark.org for more information, a printable brochure and how our programs fit the GLCE’s. Book your program by contacting Shannon Ritzer by phone (269) 945-3775, e-mail sritzer@barrycounty.org, or directly through our website at “Book a Program”.

UNCLE IRVING WANTS Join Our Team – VOLUNTEER!
If you have a positive attitude and a few hours per month, consider volunteering at Charlton Park. The
Park is currently seeking volunteers to serve as tour guides and activity instructors for education programs, handy-people & gardeners to care for our facilities, gift shop attendants during special events and much more. Some of the reasons our volunteers give for donating
their time & talents to Charlton Park include: making a measurable impact on the collection or an education program, something to do to fight off boredom, being outside talking with the public and getting free stuff! Chances are one of your friends or neighbors are already
involved in one of the fulfilling volunteer opportunities we offer. Benefits of volunteering at Charlton Park include complimentary event passes and bi-annual recognition luncheons. Call our office at (269) 945-3775 to learn more.

The 1895 Corley Sawmill is in operation during the event and visitors can take home a custom-branded souvenir shingle. New this year, a tractor pull will be held on Saturday. There’s something for everyone including games for kids, steam boat
rides on the Thornapple River, a tractor parade, swap meet, food vendors, steamed sweet corn and a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning. Bring the entire family and camp at Historic Charlton Park for the weekend. The Park’s picturesque setting offers playground equipment, volleyball, softball, hiking trails, boating, a swimming beach and more! General admission is $5 for those ages 13+ and camping for nonexhibitors is an ultra-affordable $6 per night. Become a Friend of Charlton Park The Charlton Park Village Foundation, organized in 1988, provides funds to maintain the Park’s Historic Village and Collections. Recognizing that financial assistance is needed to supplement the taxpayer supported .2259 mils used to currently operate the park, the Foundation created an endowment fund to supplement improvements to the park’s historic buildings and to repair and display items in the museum collections. This goal is considerable since there are more than 20 historic structures on the Park grounds, most of which are over 100 years old. Due to many generous gifts, our donors have enabled the Foundation Board of Directors to grant over $260,000 toward repair and display projects since its inception. Projects slated for funding in 2013 include: renovation of the second floor of the Irving D. Charlton Museum, funding for a collections intern, repairs to the Barber Shop, upgrades to display cases, new exhibit lighting and signage. We need your help to continue the Park’s legacy. Please consider a donation to the Charlton Park Village Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization. Donations are tax deductible. For more information, or to donate online, please visit www.charltonpark.org or contact the Park office at (269) 945-3775.

No Family Left Indoors No Family Left Indoors (NFLI) is a free summer program that brings together many of Barry County’s arts, recreation, natural, and educational non-profit associations to host a series of evenings of fun and learning outof-doors. Charlton Park is excited to be involved and will host “Cache Me If You Can” on June 25, 2013 from 6:30-8 p.m. We’ll talk about the fun activity of geocaching, and see if we can find the ones that are hidden at Charlton Park! If you have any questions, please contact Shannon Ritzer by phone at (269) 945-3775, or by e-mail sritzer@barrycounty.org. No Family Left Indoors runs at various locations on Tuesdays between June 4 and August 20 from 6:30-8 p.m.: 6/4/2013 – Finding Frogs at Hidden Pond - Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy – Hidden Pond Preserve. Whether it is bullfrogs or leopard frogs, kids will have the opportunity to get their feet wet and look for their favorite amphibians at Hidden Pond Preserve. 6/11/2013 – Family Night at Camp – YMCA of Barry County – Camp Algonquin. Families will enjoy a couple hours of camp, including camp games, a climbing wall, and a boat ride. 6/18/2013 – Nesting Season at Otis Sanctuary – Michigan Audubon – Otis Sanctuary. The birds are busy raising their young! Join a skilled birder at Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary for a discussion about bird’s nesting habits and then go for a hike on the Sanctuary trails to identify birds and look for nests. The approximate length of the hike will be 1.5 miles. 6/25/2013 – Cache Me If You Can – Historic Charlton Park – Charlton Park. Participants will learn about the fun activity of geocaching, which involves hiding and finding “caches” using GPS receivers. Participants will have the opportunity to hunt down geocaches found in the park.
7/16/2013 – Plantastic! – Pierce Cedar Creek Institute – Pierce Cedar Creek Institute. Plants are fantastic! Discover what plants need to do to survive through outdoor activities and exploration of the Institute’s prairies and ponds. 7/23/2013 – Trail the Woodpeckers – Thornapple Trail Association – Middleville Stagecoach Park. Learn about woodpeckers through a puppet show and stories. Participants will walk down the Paul Henry trail to the fishing dock and bridges looking for woodpeckers and the holes they have made in the trees. The Thornapple River Watershed Council will also provide a fishing experience for children off the fishing dock. 7/30/2013 – Make a Walking Stick – Chief Noonday Chapter of the North County Trail Association – Middleville Stagecoach Park. Participants will have the opportunity to make a walking stick and use it as they walk down the Paul Henry trail to the fishing dock looking for wild life. 8/6/2013 – Pond Exploration – Battle Creek Outdoor Education Center – Clear Lake Camp. It might wiggle, hop or dive but we will get out on the boardwalk with a dip net to catch pond critters. Everybody catches something to look at! If there is time, we will end with a campfire and a story. 8/20/2013 – Mission Possible: Outdoor Challenge – Barry/Eaton District Health Department – Hastings Health Department Offices. Families will play the role of secret agents as they work in groups to solve trivia, complete an obstacle course and search for clues. Come learn the secrets to being healthy while completing a fun family mission outdoors.

NEW! Teen Camping & Canoeing Trip (Ages 15 to 16) Dates: June 30 to July 3 Fee: $250.00 This camping & canoeing trip is a leadership program that is both challenging and fun. Campers arrive at Camp Algonquin on Sunday and begin working with others to build their confidence on the climbing wall, zip line, ropes courses & giant swing. Then they will ride a bus to “Chippewa Landing” campground in Manton, MI. The 3-day canoeing adventure down the Manistee River starts Monday morning. Each night campers will pitch tents, cook meals over the fire & complete other fun activities. Campers return to Camp Algonquin for pick-up on Wednesday. Resident Camp (Ages 8 to 11) Camp Algonquin offers many different sessions of Resident Camp throughout the summer. Our Resident Camp program is the heart of Camp Algonquin. Through the programs offered, campers have the widest range of activities available to them and are able to make selections based on their particular interests. During traditional Resident Camp, campers will enjoy individual skill sessions and activities that are done as a cabin, together with their cabin mates. Incorporated with Resident Camp, campers will have the option to go Water Tubing on Lake Algonquin. Each participant will first receive instruction, be required to wear lifejackets and be towed by certified staff. Campers will be introduced to the Adventure Courses - climbing on YMCA Spirit Mountain, traversing down the zip line, and manipulating the twelve obstacles on our high ropes course all designed for having fun while challenging each person to achieve their personal goals. When accomplished, these activities help build selfconfidence. Each Resident Camper will have the opportunity to go Horseback Riding on camp trails along with counselors. This will be a trail experience utilizing full safety equipment and a brief training prior to the ride. Trained staff accompany each group of campers and counselors.
Trekker Camp (Ages 12 to 14) This is our traditional Resident Camp “turbo charged.” Every day campers will participate in one of the following activities: a canoeing expedition down the twisting Thornapple River; learning the ropes while scaling Spirit Mountain and riding on our famous zip line; biking 16-20 miles; swinging in the trees on our Indian Island high ropes course or horseback riding on trails. Scuba diving and paintball are optional activities. Campers will also participate in all the other traditional evening and “all camp” events. A special ceremony on the last evening links each camper to the values taught throughout their camping experience - honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility. Trekker Camp (ages 12 to 14) Limited space available. Register Early! July 21 to July 26 $375.00
Evenings are spent playing games, cooking out, enjoying campfires and more. Thursday evening includes a special campfire with a visit from Chief Algonquin, who will challenge each camper to live the YMCA core values of caring, respect, responsibility and honesty. Resident Campers will also have the opportunity to enjoy all the traditional activities of camp: shooting sports, crafts, nature, boating, aquatics, biking, etc. As in all of our camping programs, there is plenty of caring guidance on hand to encourage children to try new activities and develop their self-esteem.
Jr. Overnight Camp (Ages 7 to 9) Jr. Overnight Camp is designed with the “first time away from home” camper in mind and/or parents who may not be sure a full week of resident camp is right for their child. The three day resident camp experience is jammed packed with activities. Campers will explore new interests and challenge themselves in cabin activities such as swimming, boating, shooting sports, field games, exploring nature, and much more.
Each session will have a “special theme” which will be communicated to families prior to their child coming to camp. Our themes are designed so that campers may bring costumes, which will be worn on “Theme Night”. A special meal is prepared that evening along with activities relating to the theme.
Campers will be introduced to the adventure courses - climbing on YMCA Spirit Mountain, traversing down the zip line and manipulating the twelve obstacles on our high ropes course - all designed to have fun while challenging each person to achieve their personal goals. Each session takes place from 8:30am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday with lunch provided. Day Camp is similar to resident camp in that campers are placed in small groups and assigned two of our trained counselors as their week-long buddies and role models. Each week is filled with exciting adventures such as paddle boating, canoeing, climbing Spirit Mountain, hiking and participating in shooting sports and arts and crafts. Twice each day, campers will swim at the “Old Swimming Hole” (Lake Algonquin) and participate in daily special events such as looking for lollipops on Indian Island and visiting Indian Joe. Campers will also have an option to sleep over in their cabin on Thursday night and take part in “all camp” campfire activities where they’ll roast marshmallows, sing songs, hear stories and get a taste of resident camp.
