aseball is more than a game for Middleville resident Tom Enslen (left) and his two sons Robby (center) and Tommy. They all say the game has helped shape who they are on and off the field. The trio, all born April 12, also share No. 12 on their college baseball jerseys — Tom, who played for Aquinas College, Tommy at Cornerstone University and Robby at Oakland University. The boys grew up playing ball and hearing stories from their dad’s days of playing the game. Now, they are starting to collect their own stories, including Robby’s catch that made ESPN’s Play of the Day, and the divine intervention that seems to have directed a reluctant Tommy back to the diamond. The best way to celebrate Father’s Day is a trip to the annual Charlton Park Father’s Car Show, the largest single day car show in Michigan, displaying over 800 cars, over 200 vendors in the Swap Meet, Flea Market and Arts & Crafts portion of the show and a bunch of food booths for your enjoyment. Show hours are 8am until 4pm and ticket prices are $5 for adults 13 & up and $3 for ages 5-12. Tickets include admission to the 17 historic buildings at the park. Again, after over 100 years of concerts, the first Hastings City Band performance of this year generated great reviews and the unanimous consensus of critics was that the band was truly outstanding. Hastings City Band concerts take place in Hastings and since their move to the Courthouse Square in Downtown Hastings the crowds have been larger than ever and enjoyed by many more people. The concerts take place on Wednesday evenings at 7pm and are free to all. The band plays a wide variety of music, marches, patriotic tunes, show tunes and other favorites written for concert bands. The concerts are sponsored by area merchants, the City of Hastings and the members of the band. 3. The ever popular “Fridays at the Fountain Concert Series” will continue this Friday, June 21 from 11:30am until 1pm around the fountain on Courthouse Square in Downtown Hastings. This week the concert will feature the incomparable sounds of the “Tony LaJoye Trio” and is free to all. Bring your lunch or pick up some food from one of our many downtown restaurants, bring something to sit on and enjoy the show. You can order lunch from the Seasonal Grille and $2 of the total will benefit the Thornapple Arts Council. Come & go as your schedule allows, rain location is Hastings City Bank Community Room. Sponsored by the Thornapple Arts Council, the City of Hastings DDA and local merchants. 4. This week’s No Family Left Indoors program (Tuesday evening, 6:308pm) will feature “Nesting Season at Otis Sanctuary,” a 1.5 mile hike, with a skilled birder, on the Otis Sanctuary trails to identify birds by sound & sight and look for nests. The Friends of the Putnam Library “Lyrics on the Lawn Concert Series” features the “Thornapple Dulcimer Society” in concert. The concerts are free on Thursday evenings on the Putnam District Library Lawn at 6:30pm. Bring a lawn chair, meet your neighbors and enjoy the fun. The Riverbank Music Series continues next Friday, June 21 from 6:30 until 8:30pm at Stagecoach Park in Downtown Middleville. The concerts are free to all. This week the feature act is “Nobody’s Darlin.” Bring blankets or lawn chairs, buy a picnic lunch from one of the restaurants in Middleville or bring your own lunch and enjoy the show. 7. One of the great activities in Hastings in the summer is the “Trolley Around Town” every Friday evening from 6-10pm. The trolley picks you up at one of 14 locations around Hastings, delivers you downtown and returns you to your pick up stop. You can ride downtown for dinner, shopping, (many stores are open until 8pm on Fridays), ice cream, coffee, cocktails (you have a designated driver) or you can just take a ride through Hastings. Catch a ride at one of the trolley stops, usually a school or park, or flag the trolley down as it passes by. All rides are free compliments of local businesses, the City of Hastings DDA, the Barry County Chamber of Commerce and of course, the great folks at Barry County Transit. Maps are available at Bosley or other merchants around town. 8. The Hastings Public Library will throw a “Pinterest Party” this Wednesday evening from 6-8pm at the library. This party is designed to introduce you to Pinterest, a tool to engage adults who are Pinteresters and patrons who are wanting to know what the Hullabaloo is all about. The Hastings Public Library “Big into Reading” program this Wednesday, June 19 at 2pm will feature “Marimbamania” a selection of Marimba and Xylophone music from around the world.
