abyrinths in Barry County and across the globe are the center of attention today, World Labyrinth Day. Kyle Herberger, Julie Moore (center) and Brianna Parham walk the shepherd’s race-style labyrinth, installed by Moore and her husband, Rick, late last year. Labyrinths were a feature of many medieval cathedrals and Greek mythology. Unlike mazes, they have only one path. People walk labyrinths slowly, as an aid to contemplative prayer and reflection, a spiritual exercise or as a form of pilgrimage. This Thursday, May 8, Downtown Hastings will celebrate the Spring Edition of “Girls Night Out” from 5 to 9 p.m. Over 30 merchants will participate and it is time for all of you “girls” to gather together and celebrate as you shop and dine downtown. There will be discounts, demonstrations, giveaways, refreshments and special deals at most stores and restaurants. How do we celebrate Mother’s Day 2014 with mom? What to do? Truth be told, a big hug and kiss, a quiet “thanks mom” for the support and love she has given you throughout the years is all most moms want and for sure, the very least they deserve. Probably the largest celebration at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute is the annual Mother’s Day Brunch and programs. Brunch seatings are at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. You must preregister and prepay at 269-721-4190 or at www.cedarcreekinstitute.org where you can find out details of the day and the menu. Free programs on Mother’s Day include a presentation on Native Alternatives to Invasive Plants (12:15-1 p.m.) and a Nature Native Plant Sale (11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) 4. The Gilmore Car Museum begins their season by offering you a chance to enter the Dust Off Car Show. They invite you to get your show car out of the garage, fire it up and dust it off. The cost is $8 if you show, general admission is $10 and includes the show and the entire museum campus. Nothing formal, no trophies, no pressure, just dust it off and join in the fun. The Gilmore Speaker Series features Titanic: “West Michigan Connections” with Titanic Historian Jay Follis this Sunday (tomorrow) at 3 p.m. in the Heritage Theater. The 127th annual Hastings High School Alumni Banquet will be held on Saturday, June 7, in the Hastings High School Cafeteria. Anyone who attended Hastings High School and their guests are invited to attend the festivities. There will be “tours” of the old high school and the Community Education and Recreation Center during the day, a punch bowl happy hour starts at 4:30 p.m. followed by the banquet and program beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 each in advance and are for sale at Bosley Pharmacy on South Jefferson Street in Downtown Hastings. Enjoy the inaugural concert of the 2014 season as the Lakewood Area Choral Society will perform tomorrow (May 4) at the Grand Ledge United Methodist Church, 3 p.m. This Sunday’s concert includes a variety of sacred selections from old favorites to new numbers. The concert is open to the public, in lieu of tickets, a free will offering will be taken. 7. The Hastings First United Church in Downtown Hastings is serving its 2nd annual Spaghetti Dinner with a live/silent auction tonight (Saturday) at the church. Dinner begins at 5 p.m., the auction starts at 6:30 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $8 per plate and the proceeds help support camp scholarships and the church dome restoration. 8. The Hastings FFA will conduct a Plant Sale this week from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. All of the action takes place in the Tractor Supply Parking Lot at the corner of M-43 and M-37, just west of Hastings. Over 2000 hanging baskets, annuals, perennials, vegetables, tomatoes and peppers to choose from. This is the perfect chance to start your planting and to help out the FFA. 9. The first Hastings Car Club 2014 Show and Shine Cruise-In is next Saturday, May 10, (and continues the 2nd Saturday of each month until September) in the Dairy Queen parking lot from 6 p.m. until dark. The Hastings Band Boosters are raising money to replace the Marimba’s in the Hastings School System. They propose to buy two new Octave Majestic Marimbas for both indoor and outdoor use and move the current 35 year old Marimba to the Hastings Middle School where there are currently no marimbas at all. The Hastings Public Library Toddler Story Time (Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m.) and Pre-School Story Time (Fridays, 10:30 a.m.) will explore “Animals: Q and R” with great stories, songs and other fun activities this week. The Movie Memories feature this Thursday (4:30-8 p.m.) is “Random Harvest” staring Ronald Colman and Greer Garson. Said by some to be the most romantic movie ever made, it was nominated for seven Oscars. This program, as are all library programs, is open and free to all. You are invited to visit the library this Tuesday 6:30 p.m. and observe the Super Battle of the Books as students from six local schools compete to see which team has the best understanding of six books, testing their comprehension, memory and recall skills. 12. The Hastings Mystery Theater presentation this week is “Roadhouse Murder” (1932) starring Eric Eric Linden, Dorothy Jordan and Purnell Pratt. A young couple takes refuge during a storm in a spooky old inn as others are doing the same. As the storm rages they soon find themselves as the only people left alive. Chick (a cub reporter) decides to incriminate himself of murder to gain journalistic fame. Things go wrong and the electric chair looms. The Hastings Mystery Theater is shown only on the Hastings Cable Access Channel, 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday evenings. 13. Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be.

After a series of informational meetings, the Barry Soil Conservation District was formed in November, 1944 by referendum vote. The District encompasses all of Barry County, including townships, cities and incorporated villages. Each year, the Conservation District orders the trees, and honoring her motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tradition, Margaret Martin delivers the trees to over 500 students. The students continue to plant their saplings- one tree at a time to save our environment while Mrs. Martin smiles down on them. Many past recipients love to share fond memories of planting their tree which for some has become a family tradition.
