etired teacher Tom Ackerman made a personal goal to hike the Lower Peninsula portion of the North Country Trail. After 37 days and 600 miles, Ackerman made it to the Mackinac Bridge, proud of his accomplishment. Ackerman, who now lives in Middleville, used to run marathons, so he’s well aware of the physical demands of such a lengthy commitment. Along his journey, Ackerman marveled at Michigan’s natural beauty, from the flat farmlands in the south to the hilly forested areas in the north. As we again this year celebrate our nation’s birthday it is important for us all to continue to recognize the freedoms that we enjoy and to realize that the constantly changing uncertainties around our world and in our own country should always be on our minds and as we deal almost daily with the criticism from countries and from our country this is still the best place in the world to live and when all is said and done, Americans are a caring and generous people and we deserve to celebrate ourselves on this one day of the year. Our support for our soldiers in harm’s way should be unwavering and our thanks for the sacrifices made by them and their families cannot be overdone. If you need an American Flag to help you celebrate one is yours for the asking at Bosley Pharmacy. March to the top of the South Jefferson Street Freedom Podium (the soapbox) this week and read the “Declaration of Independence” or sing our all time favorite patriotic song “God Bless America” loudly, proudly for all to hear and get a $5 gift certificate, an American flag, a Medbug Tattoo and a Medbug T-shirt. Lucky for us, celebrating the 4th of July Holiday in Barry County is a very special event at the Charlton Park Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration and Veteran’s BBQ. The park opens at 11:30 a.m. and the Flag Raising Ceremony and Salute to Veterans begins at Noon, followed by a day (12:30-4 p.m.) of old fashioned games (watermelon and pit eating contests, egg toss, sack races and more), musical entertainment, the village buildings will be open and in celebration of the 4th you can buy mugs of lemonade and hand cranked ice cream. Admission to the park is free this day. The Veteran’s BBQ is served from 12:30 until 4:30 at a price to be determined or you can proudly march to the Freedom Podium this week, sing the “National Anthem,” acappela, for all to hear and we will buy you dinner at the park. The remarkable Hastings City Band will play their annual 4th of July Concert this Wednesday evening, 7:30 p.m. On the Courthouse Square in Downtown Hastings. The band has been terrific this year and has prepared a great Patriotic Concert with special guests (the Thornapple Jazz Orchestra and the Lakewood Area Choral Society) featuring holiday songs, marches and other concert band selections. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on and enjoy the concert. This joyous celebration of America is sponsored by the band and choir members, local businesses, the City of Hastings and is led by the Music Master of Hastings, Joe LaJoye! 4. Fireworks this 4th of July will light up the sky above Algonquin Lake starting at dusk on July 3 and at the same time over Gun Lake on July 4th. Enjoy the shows and please remember that fireworks displays are increasingly expensive to put on and any donation you can make to the associations is much appreciated as we thank them for continuing this yearly tradition. 5. The 40th annual Lake Odessa Art in the Park celebration is next Saturday (July 5) from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Lake Odessa Village Park. Art in the Park features over 120 juried artists and craftsman displays, plenty of entertainment, kid’s activities, food booths and more. New this year to the show is a Kids Art Area and a Quilt Show. The event is free to all and sponsored by the Lake Odessa Area Art Commission.
