he theme for this year’s Barry County United Way campaign is “Waves of Change.” The kickoff, beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Barry Expo Center, will include music, food, campaign information and a speaker who has seen the waves of change created through volunteering. Guests can learn how money raised in the local community continues to create waves of change in education, health and income. Pictured here, showing the number of times United Way-funded services were sought in 2013 are (front, from left) Morgan Johnson, Barry County Volunteer Center; Lani Forbes, Barry County United Way; (back) Karen Jousma, Family Support Center of Barry County; Nathan Tagg, 2014-15 campaign chair; Tom DeVault, YMCA of Barry County; and Dan Salerno, Food Bank of South Central Michigan. For more on the campaign and its impact, see story inside.

Barry Community Foundation ASSISTING WITH BASIC NEEDS education matters network The Education Element asserts that a healthy community opens itself to new ideas and provides high quality education and life-long learning for all members of the community. On July 31, 2013, the Barry Community Foundation hosted the Education Matters Community Meeting. The gathering brought together representatives from all segments of the community and presented multiple perspectives on education; from state and national foundations to local resources. The meeting culminated in a visioning session to articulate the future state of education in Barry County as envisioned by the community representatives in attendance. The Education Matters Network is a vehicle that will drive the fundamental and systemic community change that must occur to achieve this vision.

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Barry County United Way, the family of Florence Tyden Groos, one of the founders of the United Fund, created an administrative endowment under the Barry Community Foundation umbrella to enable all of the contributions made to United Way to address programs and services of their partner agencies. The Barry County United Way is one of the very few United Ways in the nation that can truly say that 100% of all contributions go to fund programs in our community. The Barry Community Free Clinic opened in January 2009 to provide medical and dental care to uninsured and low income people of Barry County. Their mission has been clear: to provide 100% free care, to maintain a fully volunteer clinic staff and to move people into stable “medical homesâ€? whenever possible. The clinic has recently made some changes and adaptations as a result of the changing healthcare climate. Beginning this month the clinic will only provide dental care.
