rue Love” is the creation of Reuben Llano, a Michiganbased artist who shared his work at Grand Rapids ArtPrize. The sculpture was purchased by Archie and Kathy Warner after the 2012 event. The permanent home of the mother elephant and her calf is on the grounds of the family business, Harder-Warner Landscape and Nursery Inc. in Caledonia. The Warners’ personal love story has a connection to elephants, for one of the first gifts Archie gave to Kathy in the early days of their courtship, was a piece of jewelry depicting the majestic beast. This sculpture is part of a growing collection that includes a giraffe, eagle, dragon and other pachyderms on the nursery grounds. HHS Marching Band Invitational!
Saturday 9-4
1. The annual Hastings Marching Band Invitational returns next Saturday (October 4) at Baum Stadium on Johnson Field in Hastings. The day will again feature appearances by approximately 25 high school marching bands from throughout Michigan, the largest competition of its kind in the entire state. The music is non-stop all day and offers you the chance to see performances by over 1500 talented students and to support their efforts. Tickets are available at the door, or, you can play us a marching tune from the South Jefferson Street Conductors Podium (the soapbox) this week and we will buy you a ticket to the competition. If the family plays we will buy you a family ticket. (Limit 10). 2. The Thornapple Players will present “The Mouse That Roared,” a comedy, at the Dennison Performing Arts Center in the Barry Enrichment Center on South Broadway in Downtown Hastings. Performances will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, students and children (the Thursday evening performance is $7 for everyone). You may reserve tickets by calling the Thornapple Arts Council at 269945-2002 or purchase them at the door. Plan ahead, seating is limited. 3. The merchants of Downtown Hastings are again sponsoring “Girls Night Out” from 5-8 p.m. this Thursday evening (October 2). Let the scarecrow be your guide on this scary good shopping tour featuring shopping, dining, entertainment and a Scarecrow Contest. Over 30 merchants will participate in this edition of “Girls Night Out”. 4. Visit the South Jefferson Street General Store during Girls Night Out and shop the large closeout sale of 50% off on most drug store merchandise. Stop in to receive a GNO Gift Bag (while 400 last) and sign up for our prize drawing for a $25 gift certificate. 5. Give blood next Friday at the Michigan Blood Drive to be held at the Pennock Hospital Community Room from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Be sure to visit the South Jefferson Street General Store after you give and get a bag of Medbug Caramel Corn and a large candy bar as our thanks for your generous donation of the “gift of life.” 6. Visit the 2014 Harvest Festival next Saturday, October 4, from 91 on the Courthouse Square in Downtown Hastings. The weekly Farmers Market will be held along with many other activities to celebrate fall. 7. The Friends of the Hastings Public Library will hold their Fall Used Book Sale in Leason Sharpe Hall in the Barry Enrichment Center in Downtown Hastings. Hours from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. next Friday and 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. next Saturday. Admission is free. There will be a Pre-Sale to benefit the friends on Thursday evening, admission is $10. This is your chance to help the friends and to get first crack at the merchandise which includes over 8000 books of all kinds in good to great condition, sheet music, vintage books, DVDs, audio books, CDs and more. The Hastings 4 Theater Free Fall Movies continues in Downtown Hastings today and tomorrow with showings of “Turbo” at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. each day. The movies have a 15 minute intermission and are free to all. The concession stand sells a Classic Kid Combo or a Healthy Kid Combo during the feature to those who so desire. Next weekend’s feature will be “Epic.” 9. The Thornapple Wind Band invites former members and new members to join in the fun. The band is made up of post high school wind instrument players and percussionists and practices each Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. in the Hastings High School Band Room. The first concert this year will be on Friday, October 24. For more information on joining the band call 616-374-7547 or just show up at a rehearsal. Band concerts are free but the band accepts donations to support their costs. 10. The Close Out of merchandise from the former Bosley Pharmacy continues this week with 50% off the stuff. Exceptions are previously marked down Little Bucky items, Greeting Cards and Candy. Most everything else is 50% off. Pieceful Valley Quilters includes members from Middleville, Hastings and Caledonia. The quilted entry is a group effort with 12 members working for eight months on the project. Each had to recreate photographs taken on Mackinac Island using fabric, thread and fabric paint. Each quilt had to have at least a portion of a bicycle in the picture.
