f, as Helen Geelhoed believes, the quiet tranquility of gardening provides a relief from stress, then so should her husband Andrew’s collection of street rod automobiles. The seeming incongruity of a garden’s peaceful stillness and the rumble of American mechanical muscle will be the feature of the Saturday, July 12 stop at the Geelhoed residence on Upton Road as part of the 17th annual “Day in the Garden” tour sponsored by the Thornapple Garden Club. The couple’s stunning gardens and the custom car work of Andrew’s and that of some of his friends is expected to entice more men to accompany their wives or friends on this year’s tour. Six private Hastings gardens are lined up for viewing this year from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also included for the $8 tour ticket price will be the popular Garden Thyme Market on the courthouse lawn where artistic photographs, lawn art, live music -- and maybe even more street rods will be available. For an up close look at three gardens on this year’s tour, turn inside.

BOSLEY

1. The merchants of Downtown Hastings and South Jefferson Street will hold their annual “Inside-Out Sale” (previously Sidewalk Days) next Friday and Saturday. They will feature sale items both inside the stores and on the sidewalks, hundreds of leftovers, overstocks and many great bargains brought in especially for this event. Gather your friends, family and neighbors, come on down to shop the sale and enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at one of our fine restaurants (there are over a dozen restaurants of all kinds in Downtown Hastings). Parking is free and “The Medbug” will make a special appearance on South Jefferson Street and will be available for “photo opportunities.” A free “Medbug” tattoo is yours for the asking this weekend. 2. The Thornapple Garden Club of Hastings is the group mostly responsible for the beautiful flower gardens that surround us in Barry County, especially Downtown Hastings. They will sponsor their annual “A Day in the Garden Tour” next Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The tour will feature six beautiful gardens and the outdoor Garden Thyme Market on the Courthouse square in Downtown Hastings which is tour headquarters featuring vendors displaying and selling garden art, supplies and other related items as well as same day tour tickets ($10). Advance tickets $8 at Alfresco, Bosley Pharmacy and the Chamber of Commerce. Or, you can make us a beautiful bouquet from your garden to display in our store and we will buy you a ticket to the tour. (Limit 5). Proceeds are used to support the plantings the club maintains to beautify our community. For more information call 269-948-8234 or log on to www.thornapplegardenclub@yahoo.com. 3. This week marks the end of another great season of concerts by the Hastings City Band as they perform their final concert of this summer season at 7:30 p.m. this Wednesday on the Courthouse Square in Downtown Hastings. Last week’s patriotic concert may have been the best ever and the community attendance this year was record setting. If you have not been to a concert this year, take this opportunity to show your support for this very special group of musicians. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on and enjoy great music in a great setting. After the concert be sure to thank the band members and the director (Joe LaJoye) for another great season. Hastings City Bank Concerts are sponsored by the members of the band, the Thornapple Arts Council, Barry County, the City of Hastings and local businesses. 4. The annual Hastings Dawn Patrol will be held next Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon at the City of Hastings – Barry County Airport. The all-you-can-eat breakfast (served from 7-11 a.m.) includes eggs, sausage, juice, coffee and all-you-can-eat pancakes. Feed the family for a very affordable $6 for adults, $3 for kids under 10. The breakfast is sponsored by the Hastings Flying Association who will also offer airplane rides to all ages for $30. Helicopter rides are also available. Bring the family for breakfast and enjoy the show (over 100 planes are expected to fly in). You can also buy a chance for a ride with Skydive Hastings. The Dawn Patrol is sponsored by Bosley Pharmacy (home of the flying Medbug), Patten’s Michigan Monument Co., the Thornapple Flying Association and Otto’s Turkey Farm (home of the flying turkey). Make a paper airplane this week that will fly at least half the length of our store and we will buy you an airplane ride at the Dawn Patrol. (Limit 1). 5. The 43rd annual Antique Gas and Steam Engine Show (our personal favorite) will be held at Charlton Park next Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. until dusk each day. The show includes over 300 tractors, over a dozen demonstrations and exhibits, tractor parades, horse pulls, steamboats on the Thornapple and more. Tours of the village, food, entertainment, a swap meet, kid’s activities are all a part of the festivities. Admission is $5 for those 13 and over, $3 for kids 5-12. Or, you can bring your remote controlled tractor to South Jefferson Street this week, race a “Medbug” for a block and if you win we will buy you ticket to the show. (Limit 10) Call 269945-3775 or log on to www.charltonpark.org for more information. 6. The “No Family Left Indoors” series continues this Tuesday (July 8) with “Music Makers,” a program sponsored by the Thornapple Arts Council that includes listening to music, a demonstration of drumming and a chance to make your own drum. The program is from 6:30 until 8 p.m. on the Courthouse Square in Downtown Hastings. The presentation is free. For more information on this program and on the No Family Left Indoors series call 269-721-4190 or log on to www.cedarcreekinstitute.org. The monthly July Dinner will be held at 5 p.m. on July 13, with a program about the Summer Research Program at the institute. 7. A Poker Bike Run in support of the Wounded Warrior Project will be held next Saturday (July 12) starting at Red’s Sports Bar and Grill in Middleville. One of the stops is at the Olde Towne Tavern on South Jefferson Street in Downtown Hastings. For more information or to pre-register visit Red’s, OTT or any other tour stop. Proceeds support the Wounded Warrior Project for our veterans. 8. The Playing at the Plaza presentation for kids this Thursday at Noon features “Small Sounds with Paul Bauer” featuring music, movement and imagination, an experience where kids can be social and learn basic music principles while having fun, moving around and getting to play hands on with instruments. Playing at the Plaza for adults this Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. will feature the music of singer/songwriter/strolling musician David Greeley. 9. The Hastings Playground Program for kids starts this Monday and runs weekly at Central Elementary, with a Friday Field Trip. Free lunch from the Hastings Area Schools is provided from Noon until 12:30. City kids attend free, there is a charge for field trips. For more information call 269-945-4574. 10. The Hastings Public Library Summer Reading Club (Fizz-Boom-Read) features the amazing magic of Maciek the Magician at 2 p.m. this Wednesday. The new Tuesday Fab Labs will make Fizzing Sidewalk Fun this Tuesday at 2 p.m. For more information about library programs call 269-945-4263 or log on to www.hastingspubliclibrary.org. 11. Movies this week include the Movie Memories presentation this Thursday (4:30-8 p.m.) “The Lady Eve” (1941) starring Henry Fonda and Barbra Stanwyck and directed by Preston Sturges. The story is about a trio of classy card sharks who target the socially awkward heir to brewery millions for his money, till one of them falls in love with him. The Hastings Mystery Theater feature this week is “Bulldog Drummond at Bay” (1937) starring John Lodge about a pacifist organization that is a front for a spy ring determined to steal plans for a robot controlled military aircraft (now known as drones). The spies murder and steal to accomplish their goal until Bulldog is on the case. The Hastings Mystery Theater is on WoW, the Hastings Cable Access channel each Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. 12. Setting the table for a healthier barry county The B. Healthy Coalition was formed in April of 2012 as a result of the Community Health Needs Assessment, which found obesity prevention as one of the community health needs in Barry County. This coalition is a partnership among Pennock Health Services and the Barry-Eaton District Health Department and involves community participation from a variety of supporters including the Barry Community Foundation. The overarching goal of the B.Healthy Coalition is to reduce the obesity rate among Barry County residents to be at or lower than State of Michigan average according to the County Health rankings. Through a focus on policy and environmental change the B. Healthy coalition has an aim to make the “healthy choice the easy choice, and to increase awareness of a healthy lifestyle and how that helps to support and promote overall physical and mental health. The B.Healthy Coalition has been meeting monthly since April 2012 to assess the factors that lead to obesity in Barry County, as well as develop a shared vision of a community that prevents obesity. The coalition’s plan for intervention uses a broad set of evidence-based prevention strategies that take into consideration health disparities related to obesity in Barry County to assure a multifaceted and comprehensive approach to obesity prevention for the entire community.
