aster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, Super Lu has signed on with Barry County United Way as an ally in the agency’s fight to “improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of Barry County communities.” United Way kicks off its 78th annual community campaign and the Day of Caring volunteer project Thursday with a gala breakfast and celebration at the Barry Expo Center, beginning at 8 a.m. This year’s campaign theme, “Release Your Inner Hero,” ties in nicely to the recent appearance in the community of Super Lu, who takes his name from the United Way’s “Live United” motto. Every year, Barry County heroes have helped provide residents in need with housing, education and health care. Fortunately, Super Lu is the only one who needs a phone booth to be a hero. 1. Kick off for the 2013 Barry County United Way Campaign begins at 8 a.m. this Thursday morning with a free breakfast followed by remarks about the importance of United Way in our community. You are invited to attend the breakfast, learn about this year’s campaign and how United Way touches all of us in our community, especially during these tough economic times that make it even more important than ever that we consider the good works that the United Way supported agencies (there are 32 of them) do in our town and that we make a special effort this year to give of our time, talents and dollars to support and fund United Way organizations. The United Way saw an increase of requests this past year and the campaign this year will focus on raising the dollars needed to support and fund their efforts. You will be able to talk to representatives of the Untied Way member agencies about the services each provides to our community. Remember during this year’s campaign, if you work outside of Barry County, please designate Barry County United Way on your pledge card so that your contributions go to your home town. For more information about our local United Way or to schedule a presentation for your group, call 269945-4040 or log on to www.bcunitedway.org. 2. After the United Way Kick-Off Breakfast, the 2013 Day of Caring, sponsored by the United Way and the Volunteer Center of Barry County will send teams of volunteers from many area companies and organizations out to work on many community projects around the county, donating their time and talents to organizations and individuals that need our help. Or, if you or your group want to help or want more information about the United Way Day of Caring, call 269-945-4010. After you are done volunteering, visit Bosley Pharmacy on South Jefferson Street and get a free large candy bar as our thanks for a job well done. 3. The 18th annual River Clean-up sponsored by the Thornapple River Watershed Council and the Barry Conservation District will clean up the river from 8 a.m. until noon this Saturday, September 14. There will be six clean-up starting points, including Tyden Park in Hastings, food, music and more entertainment will be at many sites and you can get more information at www.thornappleriver.org. 4. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute will sponsor its annual “A Midsummer Night’s Green” fundraiser event next Saturday evening from 6-9 p.m. at the institute. This is a casual evening of delicious locally sourced food during the strolling diner, music and more using local growers and vendors, brew from a local brewery and wine from Cascade Winery. Profits support the work of the institute whose mission is environmental education, research, preservation and appreciation. Tickets are $30 for members, $40 for non-members and reservations can be made at 269-721-4190 for www.cedarcreekinstitute.org. 5. The semi-annual Barry County Household Hazardous Waste, Tire, Electronics and Medicine Collection is next Saturday, September 14 from 9-1 at the Barry Expo Center. They can take almost any hazardous waste, but there is a list of items they cannot accept. There is a charge for tires based on size and how dirty they are, otherwise disposal is free. Again this fall, the Medicine Take Back Project returns and will accept your prescriptions and other medications for disposal. Please keep medicines in original containers with the name of the drug on the label, destroy any personal information on the label. Do not dispose of hazardous waste down the drain, help keep your home and our community safe by using the hazardous waste collection project. The second annual Pennock Hospital Dirty Dozen Mud Run is next Sunday (September 15) beginning at 10 a.m. on the corner of M-43 and M-37 in Hastings. In addition to last year’s 1K option with 12 obstacles they have added a 5K option with even more obstacles. The run will end with the wedding of Dana Devries and Matt O’Laughlin. 7. The 2nd annual Happy Tails Dog Run will be next Saturday at Charlton Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m., the race starts at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $25 per person. The festivities consist of a 5K or 1 mile run or walk. You need a copy of your dog’s up-to-date rabies certificate and an entry form, available online at Active.com. All proceeds go to the Hastings Dog Park and the Barry County Humane Society. Questions answered at 269-948-8902. 8. The annual Big Whoppers Liars Contest is this week on South Jefferson Street. It is again time to climb atop the Comedy Central Stage (the soapbox) and lay a big one on us. Tell us the biggest, baddest, whopper of a story we have ever heard, really convince us, make us believers, spit out the tallest tale of tall tales. You get a $5 gift certificate for the story, another $3 if someone in the audience believes you and another $3 if you win the contest. (Limit 10). 9.
