simple act of thoughtfulness has grown into a free clothing shop known as the “We’ve Got Your Back Shack,” sponsored by Reaching Our Community’s Kids with Support, or Delton ROCKS. Housed in the Delton Kellogg Middle School, The Shack has grown into a source of assistance for students, adults, and even for area agencies for victims of fire, unemployment, sickness or other uncalamities. Today, students volunteer to work at The Shack and even have found the welcoming comfort of its surroundings as a place to ‘hang out.’ Shown checking out new donations and chatting about accessories are Delton Kellogg Middle School student volunteers, (from left) Maranda Donahue, Noelle Vroegop and Esther Ordway. This year’s Leadership Barry County class also has decided to take on The Shack as its community service project. To read more about how The Shack is providing a working example of compassion in a community, look inside.

A Wishrfor You at Easte
1. Make plans now for the 10th annual South Jefferson Street St. Patrick’s Day Parade to be held a week from this Monday (March 17) at 4 p.m. in the afternoon. You are all invited to come on down and enjoy the parade. Better yet you can participate in the parade by lining up along the alley behind WBCH in Downtown Hastings and joining in the fun. You can call the Parade Master Ken Radant at 269-945-3414 (WBCH) and register if you like or you can just show up at parade time, get a list of parade rules, find yourself a spot in line and march in the parade. The Grand Marshal of this year’s parade is pharmacist Mike Smith, a 38 year employee of Bosley Pharmacy on South Jefferson Street. Whether you participate or just come down to watch, be on time. This is a very short, but very enthusiastic parade and you won’t want to miss out on all the fun. 2. The Thornapple Players are looking for a large cast to audition for “I Owe it all to You” an original musical with books, lyrics and score by “the playwright of South Jefferson Street” Doug Acker. Auditions are this Monday (March 10) at 7 p.m. in Leason Sharpe Hall located in the Barry Community Enrichment Center at the corner of Center and Broadway in Downtown Hastings. Auditions are open to high school students and adults. More information at 269-945-2532 or log on to thornappleplayers.com. 3. You are invited to enjoy Soup and Hero Sandwiches this Thursday (March 13) as the Barry County United Way meets at noon to celebrate the successful completion of the 2013-2014 “Live United” campaign. Lunch and awards will be presented at the Leason Sharpe Hall in the Barry Community Enrichment Center. You can RSVP at 269-945-4010 or morgan@bcunitedway.org. Don’t forget that there is still time to submit your campaign donation or pledge to this year’s campaign. 4.The Thornapple Arts Council will host the High School Art Exhibition in Leason Sharpe Hall at the Barry Community Enrichment Center, Downtown Hastings on March 18-21 and March 24-27. The art works to be exhibited are by art students from Hastings, Thornapple Kellogg and Maple Valley High Schools. Admission to the exhibit is free, donations are accepted. The Opening Reception is Tuesday, March 18 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. This is a great opportunity to experience the area’s young talent and to support local arts. You can get more information on the Thornapple Arts Council or become a member at thornapplearts.org. 5. The Hastings Public Library presents Toddler Story Time (Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m.) and Pre-School Story Time (Fridays, 10:30 a.m.) featuring stories, crafts, music and more about a subject. This week’s topic is “Goats Galore”. The library Movie Memories presentation this week (Thursday 4:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.) is “The Thin Man,” the original (and the best) in the mystery series starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. These programs, as are all library programs, are open and free to all. 6. The Gilmore Spring Speakers Series at the Gilmore Car Museum tomorrow (Sunday) will feature Jerry Vinten, vintage racer and motorsports historian on the subject of “Racing Can Am, Ole Yeller and Cheetahs.” The presentation begins at 3 p.m. and tickets are $5 or free with museum admission. The lecture is appropriate for all ages, no registration is required and walk-ins are welcome. 7. The Hastings Mystery Theater on WOW Cable Access Channel this week will feature “Moonlight Murder” starring Chester Morris solving the murder of a womanizing lead tenor on stage during an opera performance. As usual, there is no shortage of suspects or motives for the murder. The movie co-stars Duncan Reynaldo and Leo Carrillo, stars of the 1950s TV Show “The Cisco Kid.” The Mystery Theater appears on WOW each Thursday and Friday evenings at 7 p.m. 8. Meals on Wheels are tasty, nutritionally balanced meals delivered Monday through Friday to homebound older adults. Drivers check on the well-being of the seniors on their route while delivering a smile and a kind word or two. In 2013, we delivered 56,906 lunch, supper, weekend and liquid Ensure meals to 290 customers. Congregate Dining is group dining available weekdays at centers located in Delton, Hastings, Nashville and Woodland. In addition to tasty, reasonably priced meals, participants enjoy fellowship, entertainment, and educational opportunities. In 2013, we welcomed 802 seniors to our four dining centers, where they enjoyed 11,764 meals. We wish to thank our Congregate Dining partners: Faith United Methodist Church in Delton, Mainstreet Banquet Hall in Nashville and the Eagles Club in Woodland. Elder Pacs are shelf-stable grocery packs we purchase from the Food Bank of Southcentral Michigan and make available, free of charge, to our lower income participants. Meals are designed for weekend consumption at home. In 2013 we provided 3,816 Elder Pacs to 59 participants of our Meals on Wheels and Congregate Dining programs. The Senior Meal Choice program offers low cost dining at three designated restaurants. The program is available to Barry County seniors who live in townships that don't have Congregate Dining available to them five days a week. In 2013, 5,327 meals were served to 306 eligible participants at the Thornapple Kitchen in Middleville, Bowen's Family Dining in Delton and C & R Café in Lake Odessa.
Parties, Parties, Parties! Our new motto is, “If it’s not fun, we’re not doing it!” We look for every excuse to celebrate life and embrace aging. Watch for our parties in the Reminder and join us for one of these fun events. Hundreds joined us at the following 2013 parties:
Christmas Easter Fathers Day Halloween Mid Winter Fun
Mothers Day Patriotic Fun St. Patrick’s Day Senior Day at the Fair Summer Picnic
Super Bowl Thanksgiving Valentine’s Day
Kinship Care Program
For more information, contact the Barry County Commission on Aging at 269-948-4856
Kinship Care refers to families who are raising relative children that are not their own, most commonly grandparents raising grandchildren. Our coordinator can assist these families as they navigate the difficult maze of public benefits, public assistance, and the court system. Education and support are an ongoing component of this quickly growing service. In 2013, we assisted 64 Barry County families raising 100 relative children.

Homemaking Services include housework, errands, laundry and light meal preparation for older adults who have conditions that make it difficult for them to do the work for themselves. Experienced aides provided 4,570 hours of Homemaking to 100 customers in 2013. Respite Care provides supervised aide care for persons who require 24-hour care in their homes. Designed to provide caregivers "respite" away from their loved ones, this program offered 2,237 hours of care to 16 homebound elders in 2013. RN Services include home visits by our RN to assess enrollee needs and perform limited medication management checks. Our RN provided 354 hours of service to 312 participants during 2013. Chore Services focus on safety and security, including the installation of smoke detectors, light bulbs and grab bars, repair of frayed electrical cords, repair of steps, and other minor home repair tasks. In 2013, our Chore staff provided 367 hours of service to 100 clients.
Community-Based Services offer a wide range of health, wellness, educational and support services to older adults and caregivers who reside in Barry County. While some programs assess a nominal cost, most are offered to the senior community free of charge.

Vo l u n t e e r O p p o r t u n i t i e s We truly couldn't do the amount of care or the quality of service without the faithful contribution of our many volunteers. In 2013, 234 volunteers contributed 6,078 hours of service to the COA, doing a wide array of tasks, including: delivering Meals on Wheels and Elderpacs; entertaining at dining centers; preparing and serving food for parties; presenting educational programs; and assisting with fundraisers. A special thank you goes out to our ongoing volunteer partners from the Church of the Latter Day Saints and the Hastings High School Community Service classes.

FUNdraisers! Barry County is a giving community, and nowhere is that generosity more evident than in the support we receive for our fundraisers! Fundraisers allow us to provide more service for our most important programs. 100% of the money raised goes into programs that serve the needs of Barry County’s older adults.
Christmas Silent Auction: Each year between Thanksgiving and our annual Christmas party, we hold a Silent Auction to benefit senior programs. Businesses, non–profit agencies, volunteers and staff fill and decorate Christmas trees, stockings and wreaths with all sorts of fabulous gifts. At our allcounty Christmas party, bid winners are announced and proud recipients take home their treasures. During Fiscal Year 2013, 55 items were donated, raising a grand total of $1,712.
Walkathon/Basket Silent Auction & Spaghetti Supper: Senior Nutrition is the focus of the annual Walkathon and its affiliate fundraisers. Held in May, during Older Americans Month, 72 walkers enjoyed the beauty of Hastings as they passed “GO” on our 3 mile route in search of Monopoly prizes and all the while trying not to “Go to jail”. Food and fun are a part of this exciting event, which raised $18,692 for senior dining and Meals on Wheels.
Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program The Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program, or MMAP, provides free counseling to Barry County residents seeking help with these programs. Professionally trained volunteers can assist with questions and enrollment into the Medicare Part D Prescription program, health plans, Medicaid, QMB, SLMB, the Extra Help program, and Long-term Care Insurance Supplemental Policies. In 2013, our coordinator and 6 volunteers provided 589 hours of assistance to 234 individuals.
Adult Day Services Adult Day Services provide relief to caregivers by providing nurse-supervised care to persons living with Alzheimer's and related dementia diseases. Day Services are available at a very low cost and include transportation, medication administration, meals and snacks. In 2013, our professional staff provided 12,265 hours of care to 28 caregiver families.
