ver the ages, the adage that “A picture is worth a thousand words” mistakenly set up a division between folks who prefer one over the other. For over 50 years, the Reminder has known that the two work together, especially in the stories we tell as part of each week’s cover photograph. Go back to the original Chinese proverb from which the adage evolved, and one finds that the literal translation is actually, “A picture’s meaning can express ten thousand words.” That’s our intent when we offer a photograph as an invitation to each week’s Reminder. We want to tug at your heart, we want to preview a written story with each issue’s cover. Words and pictures can live in harmony because, together, they provide us a means by which we bring you the best our county and surrounding area offers. This week, we review six of our best from the 52 chances we get each year. We hope you enjoy our story . . . in words and in pictures.

1. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute will sponsor a Winter Festival on Sunday, January 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. offering a variety of winter oriented activities including free sledding on the institute’s new sledding hill (bring your own sled), art activities for youth sponsored by the Thornapple Arts Council, exploring the trails by snow shoes and cross-country skis (bring your own or rent from the institute) finishing the day with a free Winter Wildlife Survival Hike (2-4 p.m.). Other activities include a free Winter Photography Program (12:15-1 p.m.) and a Glances at Nature Artist Reception (1-3 p.m.) The January Sunday Brunch is also on this day with seatings at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Attendance at the brunch is not required to participate in the other events. For more information or to register call 1-269-721-4190 or log onto cedarcreekinstitute.org. The Institute continues its annual coat drive in cooperation with Second Hand Corners in Downtown Hastings. You may drop off gently used and new winter coats, blankets, gloves and mittens at either location during business hours. 2. The Hastings Public Library presents Toddler Story Time (each Tuesday morning, 10:30 a.m.) and PreSchool Story Time (each Friday morning, 10:30 a.m.). This week both story times will explore “Sledding” using stories, songs, music and crafts. The programs are free to all. For more information call the library at 269-9454263 and ask to talk to Miss Piggy. 3. The Movie Memories series of motion pictures continues this Thursday (4:30-8 p.m.) at the library with a showing of the original “The Black Swan” (released in 1942) with Maureen O’Hara and Tyrone Power. Admission is free to all. 4. We should all be thanking everyone involved in the production of the annual New Year’s Eve Ball Drop. While there was some worry about the weather holding back the crowd, the event turned out to be the best yet. All ages were drawn to the party and all were reported to have had a very good time. Special recognition to the Thornapple Jazz Orchestra, the City of Hastings DDA and the DDA, Jon Anderson, Dave Macintyre, Mayor Frank Campbell, the Walldorff Brew Pub and everyone else who helped put on the party, and, of course the late Loretta Schoessel and Carl Schoessel whose ideas make it happen. Great job to all. 5. The City of Hastings residents are free to drop off their Christmas Trees at the drop off area behind the City Maintenance Garage in Downtown Hastings. This area can be used at any time and it is for “compostable material only.” No plastic. 6. National Write to Congress Day is January 4 and you should, especially this year, fire off a letter to your congressperson, giving them your assessment of the state of the union as you see it. Tell them what you think they should be doing to make our country great again. What issues do you care about, what problems should they be solving in 2014. Show us your letter in a preaddressed envelope and we will give you a $5 gift certificate, pay your postage and give you an American flag. 7. Trivia Day is January 4 and we invite you to bring us your toughest Trivia question this week. If we can answer it, you get zilch. If we can’t, you get a $3 gift certificate and we submit the question to the very knowledgeable people at the Hastings Public Library. If they don’t know the answer you get another $2 and we go to the ultimate authority, Shano, the only person we know with a Doctorate in Useless Information. If you stump him, you get another $2 and a bag of Medbug Caramel Corn. 8. Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be.
Gift Certificates are limited to one per person, per month and, unless otherwise stated, to those 18 & older.

he art of fishing is fishing instructor Ron Martin’s favorite subject. He shares his passion with students in Hastings and Lakewood schools each year by spending about eight hours in the classroom teaching students the basics of the sport. Each May, the students take a field trip to local ponds to try their hand at the real thing and attempt to catch a fish or two, or three, then throw them back to swim for another day. Martin has been sharing his love of the outdoors — and his contagious enthusiasm for fishing — with students for the past eight years. Pictured are Woodland students (from left) Sophie Duits, Emilie Yonker, Jacy Hansen, Caleb Steed and Martin.

hen they lay out the chess boards at the Hastings Public Library, Jenna Miller, 8, is always ready to step into a royal world made up of kings and queens and bishops. Her opponents need to be on guard because Jenna has become one of a number of chess prodigies who are learning the game and perfecting their strategies thanks to the Hastings Chess Club which meets each Tuesday after school. The youngsters often stay on to test their mettle against adult players who compete until 8 p.m. Here, Miller is playing against Leona Frost, 13, while, in the background, Rickie Bowerman, 9, is causing James Miller,11, to seriously consider his next move. Chess is a game that, studies show, helps both children and adults, increasing mental ability for developing minds and fending off potential diseases such as Alzheimer’s in older players. Read about how one of the world’s oldest games is helping to build a promising future in Barry County inside.
rare breed of small draft horses that originated with Gypsies and trace their lineage to the British Isles can be found on a 17-acre ranch in Vermontville Township. WillowWind Stable, owned by Kim and Mandy Kramar, is home to Gypsy Vanner draft horses. Only 3,000 of the breed exist in the United States. Traditionally, Gypsy Vanners hauled the caravans of Gypsies, for whom the breed’s gentle nature and strong body type made it ideal for transient life. The official registry known as the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society was established in 1996 of which Kim Kramar is treasurer. One-week-old colt Azure nuzzles with Mandy (top, right). Fionn, (top left) is a five-star-rated stallion, and The Alchemist, stallion, (bottom) recently achieved champion status at the Michigan State University Stallion Expo. With their long hair, flowing manes and tails and “feathers” that meet the road, the Gypsy Vanner breed is making itself known in its gentle way. (For more on this rare breed, see story inside)

ppreciation of the artistry in old things is only part of the reason Al Hackett of Hastings has assembled an impressive collection of cars and the fascinating memorabilia that goes with them. As a retired machinist, Hackett still spends hours each day in his shop in Hastings, fabricating parts and reconditioning the original work of craftsmen who built vehicles like this prized 1919 Dodge Brothers conversion truck. For a look at one man’s fascination with an era in which the world built wondrous things with only the technology of their hands and minds, look inside.

aseball is more than a game for Middleville resident Tom Enslen (left) and his two sons Robby (center) and Tommy. They all say the game has helped shape who they are on and off the field. The trio, all born April 12, also share No. 12 on their college baseball jerseys — Tom, who played for Aquinas College, Tommy at Cornerstone University and Robby at Oakland University. The boys grew up playing ball and hearing stories from their dad’s days of playing the game. Now, they are starting to collect their own stories, including Robby’s catch that made ESPN’s Play of the Day, and the divine intervention that seems to have directed a reluctant Tommy back to the diamond. For more on the impact baseball has had on the Enslen family, look inside.
hornapple Kellogg fifth grade resource teacher Cindy Middlebush spent much of her summer helping students catch the reading “bug” and want to read all summer long. For the second summer, Middlebush spent several hours each week delivering books to students in the TK district, making sure they had plenty of good material to read. As a teacher for 30 years, Middlebush said she recognizes the importance of students continuing to read throughout the summer. The idea of the mobile library came after attending a reading conference and hearing stories of mobile library programs. She decided her 974 Volkswagen “Bug” was the perfect vehicle to become the “Book Bug.” Now as students return to school, she hopes their reading efforts all summer have helped prepare them for a new school year. For more about Middlebush and the “Book Bug,” see the full story inside.
