1. The 10th annual South Jefferson Street St. Patrick’s Day Parade, while held in cold weather, turned out to be a great success as an enthusiastic crowd and a large number of entries combined to make a great time for all. If you missed it, you will surely hear about it from someone who was there and will want to make plans to attend next year’s parade. A big thank you to Parade Master Ken Radant from WBCH Radio for organizing the event. Also a very special “Hat’s Off” to WBCH, The Banner and The Reminder for their parade coverage, to the City of Hastings, the Hastings Police Department, the Barry County Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Retail Committee for their help and, of course to the Merry Merchants of South Jefferson Street for sponsoring the parade and to all of you who showed up to cheer us on during the “biggest little St. Patrick’s Day Parade” in Barry County. We may not be the biggest parade in the world, we are certainly not the longest, we don’t have the big balloons, we are a little shy on bands, but, we are the most enthusiastic and have the most fun. B’gosh and Begorra, what a great holiday it was, see you next year, Tuesday 4 p.m., on South Jefferson Street. 2. Thanks also to all involved in making the Barry-Roubaix Killer Road Race such a fabulous success this year. About 5,000 visitors to Hastings had a great time. The Bosley MedBike, with new dad Kevin Dickinson atop did better than last year and the many visitors to town were very appreciative. 3. The Pierce Creek Institute will sponsor a Small-Scale Aquaponics Workshop next Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. This one-day workshop will cover the basics of what aquaponics is, why it works and how you can grow your own salad greens year round. You will learn how to build a desk top, all-in-one system from locally-available materials. Cost is $40 for members, $50 for non-members and includes lunch. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required at 269-721-4190 or www.cedarcreekinstitute.org. 4. The Biggest Event in Hastings is the annual Thornapple Jazz Festival and this year’s event is less than a month away, featuring dozens of jazz bands throughout Downtown Hastings for 3 days. Most performances are free to all. Get a schedule at Bosley Pharmacy on South Jefferson Street and plan your festival weekend. For more information contact the Thornapple Arts Council at 269-945-2002. 5. Give Blood this Friday at the Michigan Blood Drive from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Pennock Hospital Conference Room. The hard winter has resulted in short supplies of blood and your donation is especially needed. The drive is open to all healthy persons age 17 or older, weighing 100 pounds or more and can give every 56 days. The semi-annual Barry County Antique Show is Saturday (today) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. this weekend. The Hastings Public Library will use stories, music, songs and playtime to discuss Jaguars and Kangaroos this Tuesday during Toddler Story Time (10:30 a.m.) and Friday during Pre-School Story Time (10:30 a.m.). The Movie Memories featured this Thursday evening (4:30-8 p.m.) is Knute Rockne: All American starring Pat O’Brien, Ronald Reagan, Gale Page and Donald Crisp, with the story of the legendry Notre Dame football player and coach. These programs, as are all library programs, are open to all and free to all. 9. The Hastings Mystery Theater presentation this week is “The Falcons Adventure” starring Tom Conway and Madge Meredith as the lady in distress. A scientist who created a formula for making artificial diamonds is murdered. The bad guys threaten to harm his daughter unless she turns over the formula. During the story the Falcon is charged with various murders and many of the suspects keep getting killed. The Hastings Mystery Theater is only available on the Hastings Cable Access Channel (WOW) at 7 p.m. every Thursday and Friday night. 10. Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be.
