or believers, the Easter season brings a unifying peace that world leaders cannot provide. Christians rejoice in the resurrection of a Savior and Jews in the celebration of freedom of their people from the slavery of Egypt. For maybe only a brief time, believers the world over will again look past the world’s acrimony and disagreement on Easter Sunday to the age-old story that, even in our modern day, brings adoration and deep meaning. Believers all over Barry County will also be marking Easter Sunday with services and fellowship. For a list and description, look inside. To our Barry County family, we wish you the peace and the blessings that the Easter season so richly offers.

1. It's getting close to April 15 so if you need help with finishing up those taxes, VITA Tax counseling is still available at the Hastings Public Library. You can call 945-0526 to make an appointment. Also, this week at the Library, the little ones will be hearing about the Stories of Helen Oxenbury. Tuesday morning Baby Time is 9:30 and Toddler Time is 10:30 with Preschool Time Friday morning at 10:30. Chess Tutoring is Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 and the Chess/Checkers Club is at 6:00. Movie Memories and Milestones is Thursday at 4:30p.m. and will be showing “The Treasure of Sierra Madre”. There are many things to get out and do at the Library this week. 2. Now that the weather is warming up, are you thinking about getting a haircut? Dick's Barber Shop right on South Jefferson Street would be a good place to check out. You will find them easily with their amazing new store front that was finished the first of the year. The new brick is beautiful and really adds more class to “the Street”. Nice job! 3. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute is partnering with Pennock Hospital to celebrate newborns with the gift of a live oak sapling. Families with babies born at Pennock since the fall of 2014 are invited to pick up a free sapling at the Institute while supplies last. Saplings can be picked up Saturday April 11 from noon until 3p.m. and the following week Monday- Friday from 9a.m. to 5p.m. 4. The Barry County Commission on Aging Spaghetti Dinner is this Friday, April 10 from 4:30-6:30p.m. Dinner includes all the traditional trimmings along with the live, toe-tapping music of The Grumpy Old Men. Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door, and children 4 and under are free. This is also the beginning of the Silent Auction for the Meals on Wheels fund raiser. There will be many baskets from local businesses and organizations to choose from and bid on from April 10 to May 16. I'm sure you will want to check out the different baskets and really consider the one from The General Store. 5. The deadline is fast approaching for the 2015 Sue Drummond Scholarship. Applications are available at www.thornapplearts.org and are due by April 17th. The scholarship is to offer assistance to students in the pursuit of scholarship opportunities to summer camp programs for the arts. These scholarships are awarded to students who reside in or attend school in Barry County and will be in grades 7-12 in the 2015-2016 school year. As always, the scholarships are competitive and limited. 6. Join Free Spring Movies at the Hastings 4 Cinema. April 4 & 5 you can see “Mr. Peabody and Sherman” at 9a.m. and 10a.m. Saturday & Sunday. You can purchase a Build Your Kid Combo that includes popcorn, choice of soda, water or chocolate milk, and either candy or a granola bar. A big thank you to Hungry Howie's and Wendy's for helping sponsor the fun. 7. Monday is Caramel Popcorn Day. If you are feeling the need to celebrate and I don't know why you wouldn't, we have it from the Grand Rapids Popcorn Company and it's delicious! 8. Watch Hastings Mystery Theater every Thursday and Friday at 7p.m. on the Hastings public access channel on the WOW cable system. Enjoy these black and white mystery movies from the 1930's and 1940's. See Charlie Chan, the Saint, Hildegarde Withers, Mr. Moto, Bulldog Drummond, the Lone Wolf and others bring the bad guys to justice. 9. We have added several new things to The General Store this week. We now have games, books, and puzzles designed by Hastings' own Andrew Johnson and Jennifer Johnson Haywood. The Jr. Rangerland series is based on the national parks in our country and are fun as well as educational. The Candle Warmers Company actually found us and we really like them. The original alternative to lighting a candle. They are an innovative line of patented candle warming products and accessories. They provide a quick, safe, and clean alternative to enjoying scented candles in the home. Michigan Maple Works makes Michigan shaped cutting boards and wooden spoons crafted in Northern Michigan. Polkadotmitten is whimsical artwork designed and made by hand in Saugatuck, Michigan. We have greeting cards, signs, and magnets made especially for Hastings. Also in the Michigan section are new books signed by illustrator Michael Glenn Monroe. His children's books are about Michigan including M is for Mitten and The Michigan Counting Book. Each of these companies and products are a great addition to our Michigan section. You just have to come in and look them over! 10. Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be. QUOTE: “We can destroy ourselves by cynicism and disillusion, just as effectively as by bombs.” -Kenneth Clark

Hastings Area Schools Transportation Department in Need of Upgrades

As a temporary solution, Hastings Area Schools began using this portable building as office space. Unfortunately, this was about 20 years ago and the portable is still in use. If voters pass the bond on May 5th, our community would see a new 4,284 square foot transportation facility. Our bus fleet is showing its age with rust and the need for frequent maintenance. The passing of this bond will allow the district to purchase at least 4 new buses.

“It feels like I ride on the same bus as my dad did when he was a kid. There are so many holes in the seats” - Evan Eastman HHS Class of 2021 Look for this informational booklet explaining the bond. It can be found around town and at various events. It will also be inserted in the April 18th edition of the Reminder!
