rom “Mustang Sally” to “Johnny B. Goode,” songwriters and performers have colorfully defined what’s in name. There’s a lot in the name of the late Mary Youngs, too, and for the seventh straight year, area concertgoers will enjoy celebrating the life and passions of the late Hastings educator, wife, mother and grandmother. Three generations of the family are now continuing the legacy and passion to help others with their concert performances. Ellie Youngs actually received her first guitar from grandfather Steve. Her dad and Steve’s son, Chase, excelled as an athlete thanks to the interest and encouragement of his parents. Since its inception, the benefit concert that has awarded two $1,000 scholarships each year to two Hastings High School students with a passion for sports and music and, with Saturday’s concert at Hastings First United Methodist Church, may pass the $20,000 endowment mark which will make the scholarship a sustaining gift. The three generations of the Youngs family will be returning their gifts from Mary with their performance this year. Though the three will be singing of other notable names in music history this weekend, there’s no doubting what’s in their name. To read more and to preview the concert schedule, look inside.

1. The Mary Young’s Scholarship Fund raises bucks to help fund scholarships for kids. One of their largest fundraisers is the annual Fund Concert and this year’s edition is at the Hastings United Methodist Church in downtown Hastings next Saturday, March 8 beginning at 7 p.m. The concert is called “What’s in a Name” and will feature songs with names in the title performed by a wide range of local and statewide talent. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and is open to all. A free will offering will be collected to benefit the Mary Young’s Scholarship Fund. If you can’t make the concert but still want to contribute send your donation to the First United Methodist Church. 2. Spring is so close, the 10th annual South Jefferson Street St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the unofficial beginning of spring will wind its way down “the Street” this year on Monday, March 17 at 4 p.m. The parade route remains the same, lining up in the alley behind WBCH Radio in Downtown Hastings, turning onto South Jefferson Street for two blocks and returning down Church Street or heading for home. The parade is known worldwide (or maybe just in Barry County) as the biggest little St. Patrick’s Day Parade around. You are invited to be in the parade - individuals, businesses, organizations, families (especially Irish), anyone. Pharmacist Mike Smith who has worked for over 35 years at Bosley Pharmacy on South Jefferson Street is this year’s grand marshal. You can walk, drive a vehicle, tow a float, play an instrument, ride a horse (you clean up the mess). If you want to participate, call Parade Master Ken Radant at WBCH (269-945-3414) or just show up on parade day and join the line. Chase away those tiresome old winter blues, put a little fun in your life and celebrate the coming of Spring by marching and/or watching the South Jefferson Street St. Patrick’s Day Parade. 3. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute will serve their monthly Sunday Brunch next Sunday, March 9, with seating times at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. You must preregister and pre-pay at 269-721-4190 or www.cedarcreekinstitute.org. The Free program for this Sunday Brunch (brunch attendance is not required), includes a program “Michigan Land Air Water Defensive” (12:15-1 p.m.), a TAC kites and crafts table (make a kite and fly it if weather permits) and an Artists Reception celebrating the artistic works of local artist Joe Hull (noon-2 p.m.) on display through May at the Institute. 4. Now is the time to sign up for the annual Sustainability Conference 2014 at the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute that will address current environmental issues that are relevant to everyone (Saturday, March 15 from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.). The conference will open with a discussion about “Renewable Energy in Michigan’s Near Future” with Douglas Jester of 5 Lakes Energy and will close with a presentation from Tony Kaufman of Lake Village Homestead Farm who will speak about what it means to be part of a sustainable community for 42 years. Breakout sessions will run all day. For a complete agenda, list of speakers and other information log on to www.cedarcreekinstitute.org. Registration and payment can also be made at the same address. You can also register at 268-721-4190. 5. The Hastings Mystery Theater feature this week is the Arsenal Stadium Mystery from 1938 starring Leslie Banks. A star player drops dead (turns out to be murder) during a soccer match. Inspector Slade of Scotland Yard has his work cut out for him. The Hastings Mystery Theater is shown on WOW cable access channel in Hastings at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. every Thursday and Friday. 6. The annual Hastings Saxon Spring Expo is next Saturday, March 8, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Hastings High School. There will be over 100 craft and vendor booths, plenty of food and over 200 Silent Auction Items (silent auction ends at 3 p.m.) for you to choose from. You can get a Craft and Vendor Contract and a list of Silent Auction items on the school website, www.hassk.12/org. Don’t miss this chance to support the students of Hastings High School. 7. The Gilmore Car Museum begins a 9-week Speaker’s Series tomorrow, March 2, at 3 p.m., at the museum, with a new topic each week through May. This week’s topic is “Titanic: West Michigan Connections” featuring Titanic research and historian Jay Follis. Tickets are $5, no registration is required and walk-ins are welcome. More information about the speakers series or other Gilmore programs is available at www.gilmorecarmuseum.org or by calling 269-671-5089. 8. Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be.

This fund was established with BCF in 2011 to assist children in Barry County attend preschool. Grant awards provide families assistance to address barriers that may prevent them from attending preschool such as tuition, transportation and ancillary daycare costs. Currently, this fund has a dollar for dollar match to encourage contributions. If you are interested in contributing please visit our Giving Center at www.barrycf.org/education-scholarships/

Carl, We little knew that morning, God was to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

Love, Nicole, Nettie, Nick and your family at Tom’s
