or an organization whose mission is to tell the stories of days gone by, Historic Charlton Park is unveiling something new this season — or newly restored, to be accurate. It’s the Hastings City Bank clock, which stood mounted on the bank’s original building in Hastings in 1926. After it was donated to Charlton Park in 1986, the stunning timepiece required extensive renovation work that was completed two weeks ago. Now, Charlton Park is back to helping visitors relive local history with a magnificent copper-restored work of art as well as with all of the park’s brilliant recreations of a bygone era. It will all be on display Saturday, May 24, during the eighth annual Charlton Park Day. Admission and lunch will be free, as well as the chance to have fun at a treasured Barry County cultural resource. Look inside for details on Historic Charlton Park’s kickoff to the summer season. 1. Next Friday is the Class of 2014 Graduation Night and, while the challenges facing this year’s graduating class seem to be overwhelming, the ability of our graduating class to conquer those challenges is not in question. Whether they go on to college, enter the military or become part of the work force we are confident they will be successful. They face an economy that, while improving, is very tough, jobs are hard to find, the cost of college is increasing to the point of being unaffordable and the ever present threat of wars and terrorism still exists around the world. Still, the graduates we know in this year’s class still seem eager to be on their way, optimistic about the future and convinced they can make a difference, in fact that they can conquer the world. It is our belief that they can and will. All of us on South Jefferson Street congratulate our local graduates and their parents on this special occasion and wish you only the best. If you are graduating this year, visit Bosley Pharmacy this week and get a $3 gift certificate and a bag of Medbug Caramel Corn. Wear your cap and gown and get another $2. 2. The annual Michigan Week Mayor Exchange Day is next Wednesday in Hastings as we welcome the Mayor and other city officials from Marshall, and treat them to a tour of our great city. We have much in our community that is good to share and show off and as you see our visitors traveling through town be sure to welcome them to Hastings, shake a few hands and offer any assistance they might need, again proving to all the truth of our slogan. “Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be.” 3. For the 127th year, the annual Hastings High School Alumni Banquet is two weeks from today (June 7). Tickets are $15 in advance at Bosley Pharmacy or by calling 269945-2790. The Charlton Park Village Foundation was established in 1988 with the mission to provide funds to maintain the Park’s Historic Village, Museum and Collections. Recognizing that financial assistance is needed to supplement the taxpayer supported .2259 mils used to currently operate the Park, the Foundation created an endowment fund to supplement Park improvements. This goal is considerable since there are more than 20 historic structures on the Park grounds, most of which are over 100 years old. Due to many generous gifts, our donors have enabled the Foundation Board of Directors to grant over $288,000 since its inception. Projects slated for funding in 2014 include: renovation of our 1909 Buick Model F, restoration of the iconic Hastings City Bank Clock,
funding for a collections intern and upgrades to the museum security system. We need your help to continue the Park’s legacy. Please consider a donation to the Charlton Park Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization. Donations are tax deductible.
For more information, or to donate online, please visit www.charltonpark.org or contact the Park office at (269) 945-3775
Explore More is a two week summer program designed to explore some of Barry County’s finest learning centers. Specifically geared towards middle school students entering 5th through 8th grades, these programs will challenge each participant in a variety of ways. Participants will explore teambuilding and individual self-confidence at YMCA Camp Algonquin, environmental research at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, check out cars from the Model T to Hot Rods from the 1950s and 60s at the Gilmore Car Museum, and get a glimpse into the practice of paleontology and archaeology at Historic Charlton Park. Registration includes transportation and lunch. Participants will travel together to each site for a full day of activities with trained
staff. They will spend one day a week at Pierce Cedar Creek, the Gilmore Car Museum, Historic Charlton Park, and Camp Algonquin. Cost of the program is $150 per participant for “early bird” registration (through May 23), $175 if registered after May 23, and includes both weeks. Participants may register for one week only, however, two week registrants will have first preference. Financial assistance is available to qualifying families through the YMCA. Did you know ? Educators – Bring Your Students To Charlton Park Irving Charlton strongly believed in the preservation of agricultural and common household objects from the 19th century for the education of future generations. Our education programs are designed to expand student’s knowledge and comprehension of the past through hands-on participation in our historic village. We provide a personal connection to history that can be adapted to any age or interest level. The education programs utilize the buildings and artifacts to bring history alive for your students! Your students will be able to see, listen, touch, smell, and feel their way through history! Our most popular programs are Live-In and Down on the Farm. If you choose the Live-In, students live
the life of a child at the turn-of-the century by participating in daily chores and activities. If you choose Down on the Farm, students experience what life may have been like living on a farm in the late 1800’s. You also may select experiences la carte. Interested? Charlton Park will continue to offer their programs for FREE to Barry County schools who attend field trips during the month of November. Book your program by contacting Shannon Ritzer by phone (269) 945-3775, e-mail eduprograms@charltonpark.org, or directly through our website at “Book a Program”.

Join Our Team: Volunteer Historic Charlton Park is so much more than a collection of old buildings and artifacts. It is a special place made so by the people who bring life to the village. If you have a positive attitude and a few free hours per month, please consider volunteering at Charlton Park. The Park is always seeking vol-
unteers to serve as tour guides and activity instructors for education programs, handy-people and gardeners to care for our facilities, gift shop attendants during special events, and much more! Free Family Fun! - No Family Left Indoors Tuesdays, June 3 - August 12 •
No Family Left Indoors (NFLI) is a free summer program that brings together many of Barry County’s arts, recreation, natural, and educational non-profit associations to host a series of evenings of fun and learning out-of-doors. Charlton Park is excited to be involved once again, and will host ‘Compass Crusaders’ on June 24, 2014 from 6:30-8 p.m. Participants will learn the basics of how to use a traditional compass and how to read a map with a compass. These skills will be put into practice by completing an orienteering course in the Park. If you have any questions, please contact Shannon Ritzer by phone (269) 945-3775, or by e-mail at sritzer@barrycounty.org. No Family Left Indoors runs at various locations on Tuesdays between June 3 and August 12 from 6:30-8 p.m. 6/3/2014 - Nesting Season at Otis Sanctuary - Otis Farm Bird Sanctuary - Early-June is an excellent time for viewing and listening to nesting birds. Join a seasoned birder at Otis Sanctuary who will help participants recognize birds by their songs, appearance, and habitats on this 1.5 mile hike. 6/10/2014 - Family Night at Camp - YMCA Camp Algonquin - Families will enjoy a couple hours of camp, including camp games, a climbing wall, and a boat ride. 6/17/2014 - Beginner Mountain Biking - Wildwood Trails Park, Middleville -Kids can learn to build their skills on this local trail and then try longer area mountain bike trails, such as the Deep Lake Trail in Yankee Springs. No bikes will be available, so bring a bike to participate. 6/24/2014 - Compass Crusaders - Historic Charlton Park. Participants will learn the basics of how to use a traditional compass and how to read a map with a compass. These skills will be put into practice by completing an orienteering course in the Park. 7/1/2014 - Finding Frogs at Hidden Pond - Hidden Pond Preserve Whether it is bullfrogs or leopard frogs, kids will have the opportunity to get their feet wet and look for their favorite amphibians. 7/8/2014 - Music Makers - Courthouse Lawn, Hastings - Listen to
6:30 - 8 pm
music, see a demonstration of drums and drumming, and make a drum at this event sponsored by the Thornapple Arts Council. 7/15/2014 - Outdoor Concert - Pierce Cedar Creek Institute - Community Music School students will play an outdoor concert. Instruments will be available to touch and explore. 7/22/2014 - Tremendous Trees - Pierce Cedar Creek Institute Michigan is the land of trees and was once covered nearly end-to-end with massive trees. Learn more about Michigan’s trees and the roles they play both in cities and in forests through a variety of exploration activities. 7/29/2014 - Backpacking and Fishing - Stagecoach Park, Middleville North Country Trail Association will do a demonstration on what to bring on an overnight trail hike. The Thornapple River Watershed Council will do fishing demonstrations and give youth an opportunity to fish on the river. 8/5/2014 - Photo Scavenger Hunt - Hasting Public Library - Enjoy a walk through downtown Hastings and the Riverwalk Trail to look for architectural details, identify sculptures from different angles, and match natural formations to photos. Bring the scavenger hunt sheet back to the library by 8 p.m. to be entered into the evening’s prize drawing. 8/12/2014 - Pond ExplorationClear Lake Camp, Battle Creek Outdoor Education Center. It might wiggle, hop, or dive but kids will get out on the boardwalk with a dip net to catch pond critters. Everybody catches something to look at! If there is time, the program will end with a campfire and a story.
