he original wood windows in the 1843 Vermontville Academy Museum are receiving a fresh coat of paint, glazing and in some cases replacement wood and glass, made possible through a grant offered by the Michigan Historic Preservation Network. A 10-day preservation trades training program is underway at the museum. Jeff Seavolt (top left) of Vermontville, Kevin Elzinga of Grand Rapids, (right) and Dave Deppe from Marshall are part of the team involved in the upgrade. Seavolt is the building trades teacher for Maple Valley Schools. Elzinga owns historic properties in Heritage Hills district in Grand Rapids, and Deppe, one of the trainers for the workshop, owns a construction firm. 1. Be sure to check your calendar today, the 11th annual Thornapple Jazz Festival is two weekends away (April 24-26). Close to 100 school jazz bands, steel drum bands, professional groups and vocal jazz singers will perform in Downtown Hastings. All concerts (except the headliner concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings, $10 each) are free to all. The festival will open on Thursday evening with a concert featuring the locally famous Thornapple Jazz Orchestra with a performance at the First Presbyterian Church on M-37, just north of Hastings. All day Friday and Saturday close to 100 high school jazz bands, steel drum bands, high school vocal jazz singers, professional groups and more will perform at over a dozen venues throughout Downtown Hastings. Central Auditorium will feature the headliner Vocal Jazz Concert featuring the WMU Gold Company and a group of high school jazz performers at 8 p.m. on Friday evening. The auditorium will feature the headline Festival Concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening featuring the Middle and High School All Star Bands opening for the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra. Play us a jazzy tune from the South Jefferson Street Stage this week and we will buy you a ticket to the concert of your choice. The Hastings American Legion Post 45 will celebrate “Streak Fry” next Saturday, April 19 beginning at 4:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per person and the dinner is open to the public. The Hastings Public Library Toddler Story Time (Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.) and Pre-School Story Time (Friday 10:30 a.m.) will explore “Mice” in stories, music and song this week. This is the 15th of the so called Falcon films and the second one starring John Calvert as the Falcon. A professional magician moonlights as a private detective and is hired by an insurance company to investigate an art theft and art fraud. A suspect is murdered and the trail leads to the beautiful owner of an art gallery and he must find out if she is the victim of the fraud or the brains behind the foul deeds. The Hastings Mystery Theater is shown at 7 p.m. each Thursday and Friday evening only on the Hastings Cable Access Channel (WOW). 8. Free Spring Movies continues this Saturday and Sunday with the feature “Rango” shown at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. The presentation is free to all and includes a 15 minute intermission.
