While there seems to be an improving economy in our part of Michigan, during this year and Christmas Season almost every one of us are dealing with the effects of our economy and the continuing need for our soldiers in service around the world to be in harm’s way, it is harder to be jolly and bright this holiday season. The needs of many among us are greater than ever, but, as we have in the past, our community will rise to hopefully fill those needs. Our ability to celebrate the season is second to none as evidenced by the Christmas Parade, Santa and the Holly Trolley, the dazzling lights around town, the many concerts and plays of the season, the numerous church celebrations, the school activities, nobody does it better than we do. But, as we enjoy the pageantry of the season, we need to be ever mindful that the true Christmas Spirit in our community lies in our efforts to brighten the lives of those who need our help. Whatever way you choose to share the season with others, through the family adoption program of Barry County Cares and the Salvation Army, by helping through your church, school or other charitable group, or by helping individually someone in need, you have demonstrated the true meaning of Christmas and deserve thanks for a job well done. Even in our community, Peace on Earth, Goodwill to All seems to get away from us periodically, hopefully this Christmas Season will remind us to follow the Golden Rule, now and in the coming year. Hastings (What you always wanted your hometown to be) and Barry County, a very special place in a country like no other on earth, we should be thankful to live here. We pause again this year on “the street” to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years. 1. Again this year the Hastings American Legion Post will continue a long tradition of serving Christmas Dinner to all who need to be fed. Be you homeless or alone, don’t have enough room for the family at your place or just need a good meal and the fellowship of the season, come on down and enjoy a feast including turkey, ham and all the trimmings at no charge to you thanks to the generosity of the Anonymous Santa and the great folks of the Legion. Call 269-945-4973 for more information or to help serve or deliver dinner. Dinner is served at the American Legion and Auxiliary Post 45 on M-37, just south of Hastings from Noon until 3 p.m. 2. The final Holly Trolley rides of this Christmas Season will be this Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. with Santa and his Singing Elves. Trolley rides are free this night sponsored by Bosley Pharmacy. A big “well done” to Barry County Transit and local merchants for making the season bright. 3. For those of you who are hungry during the Christmas Season or throughout the year there are Fresh Food Initiatives and Food Pantries in Barry County. For more information about them and how to use them call the Barry County United Way at 269-945-4010. 4. The “Green Street Band” will perform their Christmas Concert, “He Came to Get Messy” tonight (Saturday), 7 p.m. in the newly renovated worship center at the First United Methodist Church in Downtown Hastings. The concert is free to all, child care available for kids (infants to 5 years old). Those who so desire can make a donation to the historic restoration of the dome atop the building. 5. Bosley Pharmacy is open every day of the year to serve you (except Thanksgiving and Christmas). We do, however, have some special hours during Christmas Week. We will be open our regular hours daily, except we are open from 9-3 on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day. 6. We still have a limited supply of 2014 Stick up calendars and 2014 Norman Rockwell Calendars free for you (one per customer please) while they last. 7.
