n communities all over Barry County, little ideas can grow to become great things. That’s what happened in Hastings 10 years ago — or maybe 20 or 30 years ago — when Dave Jasperse (left) and Ken Radant (right) found a four-leaf clover and a pot of gold in the back alley and turned it into the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Hastings. Leprechaun Mike Smith (center) this year’s parade grand marshal, hasn’t missed a parade yet and marvels at how his colleagues kept their plans merry and their dreams always focused at the end of the rainbow. The parade continues to be a celebration of Jefferson Street, on which Jasperse’s business is located, but it’s also become so much more. “It’s kicking ‘Ol’ Man Winter’ off the stage,” is how Radant looks at the delightful and still low-key event that kicks off this year — as it always does — in the alley Monday at 4 p.m. To read more about how the Irish charm grew and how a community fostered its success, look inside.

1. After the toughest winter in many a year, the arrival of Spring is marked by the annual (10th) South Jefferson Street St. Patrick’s Day Parade to be held this Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. down South Jefferson Street. It has been a very tiresome season and the parade annually marks the beginning of what promises to be a glorious time of the year. Everyone is invited to come on down and enjoy the parade. Better yet, you are invited to be in the parade. The parade will line up in the alley behind WBCH in Downtown Hastings, march south down South Jefferson Street, ending at Center Street. Almost three blocks of St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. You can call the Parade Master, Ken Radant at 269-945-3414 (WBCH) and register if you like or you can just show up at parade time, get a list of parade rules, find yourself a place in line and march in the parade. The parade is expected to be led by the American Legion Color Guard and include, among others, Mayor Frank O’Campbell, a fire truck or two, a bunch of police cars, plenty of green tractors, a beauty queen or two, maybe some music, a bunch of those of Irish heritage, the Medbug, the Medbug Bike and more. The Grand Marshal of this year’s parade is pharmacist Mike Smith from Bosley Pharmacy, who has worked on “the street” for some 38 years, serving our community, certainly deserving of the honor. Whether you participate or just come down to watch, be on time. This is a very short, enthusiastic, but very colorful parade. Please remember that this year’s parade is Monday, March 17 at 4 p.m. For more information call WBCH at 269-945-3414. 2. Other ways to celebrate the holiday include participating in Irish Story Time. You climb atop the South Jefferson Street Stage (the soapbox) known for this occasion as the Blarney Stone and spin us an Irish Tale, blarney or not. If the crowd believes your tale it’s worth a $5 gift certificate, if not you get nada. You can also celebrate by participating in Irish Song Time this week as we move the Blarney Stone (the soapbox) to the street in front of Bosley’s and you sing us an Irish Tune for a $5 gift certificate. Sing what many call “the Irish National Anthem,” (Danny Boy) and get a $10 gift certificate. Sing what many believe to be the “Irish National Anthem” (Danny Boy) loudly, proudly as only an Irishman can and we will add a Med-Bug T-shirt. If the crowd sheds a tear, we will add a Medbug Tattoo. You can dance an Irish Jig from atop the Blarney Stone and get free Corn Beef and Cabbage at the County seat. A free green carnation while supplies last at Bosley Pharmacy on St. Patrick’s Day. 3. The movie selections in Hastings this week include the Hastings Mystery Theater on WOW, the Hastings Access Channel. The feature this week is “The Falcon’s Alibi” starring Tom Conway as “the Falcon,” one of a series of Falcon movies. The Hastings Mystery Theater is presented at 7 p.m. each Thursday and Friday evening on WOW. The Hastings Cinema 4 Free Spring Movies include “Dragon” today and tomorrow (Saturday and Sunday) at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Next week’s feature is “Madagascar”, same days and times. The Movie Memories feature this Thursday (4-8 p.m.) is “The Lady Vanishes” starring Margaret Lockwood. 4. The Gilmore Spring Speaker’s Series will feature Brad Pines, extreme super car experience driving instructor and journalist motorsports discussing “From Priu to Ferrari, Driving your Car on the Track.” The program begins at 3 p.m. and the cost is $5 at the museum. 5. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute presents “Gardening for Everyone” this Wednesday evening from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Mike and Carol Klug will share their extensive gardening experience and how to create a peaceful co-existence between gardens and the wildlife which shares the same space as their habitat.
