or all their lives, Doug and Margaret DeCamp have been entrepreneurial thinkers. It’s a trait they’ve passed on to their family and, with the help of their children, they’ve now found an innovative way for the entire community to help touch the future through its children. With a substantial gift made in a very simple way, the DeCamps are opening a savings account with a $50 deposit for every Barry County child entering kindergarten next fall. With the help of teachers, parents, and other community philanthropists, those accounts will have 12 years to grow and, at graduation, can be used for college, for vocational and technical training, or for any path that will lead a Barry County student to a job and a profession. Pictured when they got together recently to discuss their project, are DeCamp family members, Doug and Margaret, center, surrounded by their children, from left, Ken, Matt, Jim, and Deb VanderVeen. Not pictured is daughter, Bev Osterink. Below are just a few of next year’s fortunate kindergarten class posing with teacher Janel Pena at Noah’s Ark Pre School where they’re already learning early lessons on compound growth. From left, are Avery Walsh, Sydney Patterson, and Charlie Mattice. For more on the visionary program that will benefit the lives of Barry County children, turn inside.

The hours are 8a.m. to 6p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 8a.m. to 1p.m. Friday. The perfect time to make your Thanksgiving centerpiece is Saturday, November 8. From 9a.m. until noon you can join Patricia Baker-Smith from Nodding Thistle Farm as she helps you create your own dried flower arrangement. The program will begin with a short hike, collecting natural materials from around the institute. You will then learn how to dry your own flowers for arrangements. The workshop will end with an opportunity to create an arrangement that you will take home. The cost for members is $20 and for non-members is $25. The 12th annual 2014 Holiday Gift Show and Lunch is Sunday November 9 11a.m. to 3p.m. There will be over 25 art vendors selling handcrafted and creative gifts. It’s the perfect place to find unique gifts and maybe something for yourself, too! Call or check their website for lunch times and tickets and for more details for each event at www.cedarcreekinstitute.org. 3. The Thornapple Players Proudly Present “A 15 Year Musical Revue” November 7th and 8th at 7p.m. and on November 9th at 2p.m. at the Dennison Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students and are available in advance from Progressive Graphics. For reserved tickets call the Thornapple Arts Council at 269-945-2002. Tom’s Market opens today. They have been greatly missed since the fire, but they are opening up bigger and better than ever. The meat department is back and they have added a new seafood case. A big welcome back to Nicole and to her entire staff! 5. Have you visited the new Dairy Queen yet? They opened their new store on Wednesday serving more food items and the same delicious ice cream. The new location is easy to get to and bigger to serve more people. It might be turning cold, but it’s always time for ice cream! 6. The new General Store is coming along. We closed for remodeling last week and we will also close this next week as we finish on one side and start on the other side. As with many remodeling projects, when you get into it you find there are more things you might as well do as long as you are doing it and we have done just that. We are looking forward to the finished results and inviting you all in to check out our new look and all the new items we are ordering in a few weeks. Keep watching for new things in our ad as we start putting in some of the new lines we will be carrying and come closer to our re-opening in a few weeks. It’s going to be exciting and we can’t wait to show you our new look! 11. Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be.

Readers are a newspaper’s greatest teacher Every year, when J-Ad Graphics makes its appeal to our readers for voluntary partnerships financial gifts that support our mission as the community’s news source, I get the same nervous feeling I had as a school kid when the first report card of the new school year was about to be issued. I do worry about how are “You are doing just readers will respond with their great. The comments that come with their financial gift -- and sometimes not -- is a report card grade. They tell us how committed we’ve been to our jobs and how well we’ve succeeded in our mission to be the best news source for our community that we can be. We have received some crit“I do enjoy getting the ical grades -- and well we paper and the help I get should have in the areas that from it. I appreciate those helpful comments. What feels even better, of “You are our only course, are those gifts that come with a note of gratitude source of news for and words of encouragement Delton. Keep up the for the times we’ve done our good work!” job well. Fortunately -- and I forget this every year -- those compliments far outweigh the critical ones. What I also overlook every year, too, is how I and all of us who work at J-Ad Graphics, are going to be so personally touched by those messages. “I can’t quite afford the $30, so thought I’d send a little to help just a bit,” wrote one reader. “The Reminder is a great news-
paper/want ad publication. I’m “I recently moved into so glad it’s delivered to me.” Delivery is a big issue and, the Middleville area and as difficult as it is to deliver over read the Sun and News 70,000 papers on a Saturday whenever possible, just morning every week of the to catch up with local year, it’s heartwarming to me to events. I so much appreciate learning how we compare to the expectations and the experiences of our readers. “I am very impressed with the quality of your reporting,” wrote “I enjoy reading all the another. “I have lived in several news in and around the areas of the state and have Maple Valley News found nothing comparable to area. The features about local people gives a neighborly feel and keeps us connected. I head for the mailbox every Saturday . . . thank you for a great paper, it’s the best.” That’s like an A+ on my report card. What finally convinces me that we’re on the right track, though, is learning that readers, too, feel that they are part of our commitment to the community. It’s a two-way contract, as another described. “I enjoy receiving the Reminder delivered to my “It’s all I can afford, but doorstep,” wrote the reader, I like the Lakewood “but I feel, too, that I am con- News.” tributing to our community (with my gift) and helping people that work for you.” Thank you for another year of tremendous response to our appeal for assistance. It represents a wonderful fiscal boost. It also represents the encouragement that allows us to move forward to make what we do best even better. It’s also like a report card with passing grades.
