1. The annual Hastings Summerfest Celebration (our 36th year), “Golden Oldies: 50s and 60s” continues today (Saturday and Sunday). Sunday events include the very popular Hastings Car Club Summerfest Car Show in Downtown Hastings from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Over 300 entries are expected to be in attendance and to join in the fun. Trophies and Best of Show Awards will be given at 3 p.m. and the show is free for all ages. The Car Club also sponsors the Kid’s Parade, “Golden Oldies.” The parade is free for all ages and starts at Boltwood and State Streets, proceeding down State Street to the Courthouse Square. Kids who want to participate should show up at 12:30 p.m. this Sunday and the club will find you a spot in the line-up for a 1 p.m. start. Proceeds from the car show are donated to local children’s charities. The Bosley Medbug is a show sponsor and the Derby Medbug will make a special appearance during the show. Kids will get a chance to sit in the Derby Medbug and Mom and Dad can take pictures of them in the car. 2. Events today (Saturday) include the Summerfest Grand Parade, numerous sporting events, arts and crafts on the Courthouse Square, the Soapbox Derby Race, entertainment, trolley rides, the Elk’s Refreshment Tent, Kid’s inflatable activities and more. There is much to see and enjoy on the final two days of Summerfest weekend. 3. As we recover from our annual Summerfest Celebration, our neighbor, the Village of Woodland will keep us in a party mood with the annual Woodland Homecoming celebration this Labor Day Weekend. They will celebrate Woodland’s 177th anniversary starting next Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the homemade ice cream social followed by Sloppy Joes, pie and cake until the Eagles Lodge Fish Fry from 5-8 p.m. The well known Softball Tournament starts Friday evening and continues until Sunday. Saturday activities include breakfast at the Eagles Lodge, crafters, the traditional parade at 2 p.m. and many other activities for kids an adults. 4.The annual “Havoc in Hastings” tournament will again be at Charlton Park next Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. This is a historical recreation event sponsored by the Society for Creative Anachronism featuring Knights in Armor, damsels in distress and actual sporting events of the time, including jousting, fencing, archery, heavy weapons combat and more. This is a real athletic competition, no fake stuff. There will also be artisans and craftsman of medieval times plying their trades during the day. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for ages 5-12, under 4 get in free. 5. The Barry County United Way, the Hastings City Bank and the Coleman Agency are again accepting donations of school supplies for the Back Pack Program featuring free back packs for students of all grade levels who might need one. You can drop off a donation at any of their locations. Back Packs are given to families referred by local social service agencies or, if your family is in need of one call 269-945-4010. 6. This Sunday (tomorrow) will be a great day to visit the Gilmore Car Museum and, in addition to the regular price of admission, the annual Pierce-Arrow Gathering at Gilmore will be going on, drawing members and autos from across the country will be in attendance from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at no additional charge. Local students enjoy culinary experiences by Constance Cheeseman Staff Writer This summer, six high school students participated in a program that provided opportunities to learn reallife skills and, quite possibly, instill a new-found passion in the career field of culinary arts. James Barnum, Richelle Bell and Ray Kosbar from Hastings High School and

Alex Kulinski, Tiffany Smith and Jordanne Terry from Delton Kellogg High School took part in an eight-week culinary experience run through the Barry Intermediate School District in partnership with the YMCA of Barry CountyCamp Algonquin. The program assigned the students to the task of working in the kitchen at the

YMCA camp alongside chef and mentor, Jill Newton. The program, however, wasn’t just about a summer job. It was about arming the group with the skills to be successful and productive. “The program came together after several years of discussion about adding a culinary arts program to our list of career preparation programs,” said Fred Jacobs, vice-president of J-Ad Graphics and member of the VoTech Committee, a group of local business leaders and professionals working through the BISD. “We knew that it would be a popular career field for many students throughout the county.” Tom DeVault, YMCA director, suggested the idea of the students preparing meals for the campers this summer. He had just hired a culinary arts graduate, Jill Newton, to run the food service program for the camp. “It was a natural fit,” said Jacobs, “the YMCA had the licensed kitchen, the trainer and someone to eat all the food we planned to prepare.” Three students each from Hastings and Delton schools were selected to take the

Thanks to the Interagency Cash Transfer Agreement between Michigan Rehabilitation Services and the BISD, the students could be paid for their work at the YMCA as well as take a part in a three-day orientation and more. Orientation began June 6, with students working on soft skills, such as workplace ethics with Donna Lipp of Michigan Works, touring the YMCA and meeting with DeVault. The second and third days of orientation involved visiting farms such as Otto’s Chicken Farm, Origin’s Hobby Farm, Sand Creek Dairy and Otto’s Turkey Farm in order to gain
