he fall season offers Barry County firefighters a prime opportunity for the other important part of their job: community education. Among the 200 Barry County firefighters and medical first responders who are using Fire Prevention Week and Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month to publicize free detector distribution programs and provide reminders that the Nov. 3 time change is a good time to replace detector batteries are (from left) Freeport Fire Chief Jim Yarger, and Hastings Fire Department members Bruce Coenen, Brian Tyner and Pattrick Jansens. For more information on fire prevention and the detector distribution program, look inside.

Thank you, readers, for continuing to value community news In today’s breakneck-paced, cold bottom line world, words of thanks and encouragement are rare or forgotten. Which is why we, as a staff at J-Ad Graphics, feel so fortunate today. As part of our second annual voluntary subscription campaign, the folks whose names you see surrounding this page have received your compliments, your thanks -- and your challenges -- over the past four weeks. With nearly every reply to our request for assistance came words of inspiration for the people who get the Reminder, Maple Valley News, Lakewood News or Sun and News to you in Barry County and surrounding areas every week.
improve. Your encouraging words and helpful suggestions will help us to do exactly that. Over 300 readers have responded to our appeal as of this publication, slightly behind last year’s response rate. We know, however, that, as readers continue to enjoy our publications, they will recognize the importance of our newspapers and respond as they are able. At left is our voluntary payment form. You can mail it to us, drop it off at the front counter, or you can go online and use our crowd-funding contribution link found at: www.hastingsreminder.com
Thank you for your participation in the program and for your encouraging comments. Thank you, too, to folks who, though unable to contribute financially, took the time and the consideration to thoughtfully reflect on what we do right and on what we need to work toward.
Thank you for your response this year and your assistance. As we continue to grapple with the growing expense of newspaper production and delivery, you are helping us to maintain our resolve -- both financially and personally.
We work hard as a staff because we, like you, hold our community dear and want to reflect it best. In every endeavor, though, there’s room to
From all of us ad J-Ad Graphics
What some of our readers said... “We always look forward to receiving the Reminder each week, along with the Maple Valley News. Your coverage of local news is always up to date. We have also used the classified ads, with good results.” Nashville “We enjoy the Reminder to keep us updated on events in the area. Look forward every week for garage sales, auction sales and articles of all sorts. Great job.” Carlton Township “Doing a great job of watching the pulse of life of the community and then keeping us informed of the developments occurring. Thanks, keep up the great reporting!” Hastings “I’m grateful to live in a community that values and supports an independent print news publication -- and one that is free, at that. Many thanks to the leadership at J-Ad for its dedication to continuing such an important community service, despite the overwhelming pressures of a world gone ‘viral.’ Many thanks and keep up the great work!” Hastings “In the ever changing landscape of a small town, you are the glue that holds things together. Communicating where we came from to where the community leaders would like to take us. We seldom recognize many blessings ‘til they are gone and leave a void in our life. I was born in Hastings in Jan. 1943. My wife and I own some land in Barry County, but live in Lansing. We often ride to Hastings for lunch at the Ponderosa or Applebee’s or even coffee at Big Mac’s. I would like a subscription, please. You don’t have to mail or deliver. I will pick up at your dispenser in front of J-Ad.” Lansing “I’m new in town and I consider this publication a real small town treasure. I would hate to do without it. You do a superb job and make Hastings a superior place to call home.” Hastings “The Reminder is a part of our lives. We would have felt lost without it after all these years. We really like that you have numbered the pages.” Hastings
“Yes, please continue publishing the Reminder. How else can I know who in Barry County is still living? How else will I know what Family Fare is offering on sale? Your delivery people on M-43 south of Delton are wonderful. I go with a walker or a cane so the lady brings the Reminder to my door. Please thank her for me.” Delton “Thank you for the Reminder on my door every Saturday morning -- good reason to get up!” Hastings “For over 55 years, we’ve been subscribers to the Banner, which we’ve enjoyed. Also have enjoyed reading the informed ‘free’ Reminder, too! Hopefully, with many donations like ours enclosed, you can continue to be able to provide and deliver the Reminder. Keep up the good job of local paper provider business. We are still paper readers!” Hastings “I’d be lost without my Reminder! Can’t let anything happen to this publication. Way to go Jacobs! Hastings “Hi! I just moved to Hastings after living in Jenison for 53 years . . . I love it here! Also, I love the Reminder! It has the local paper in Jenison really beat. It shines the spirit of the community in every page! Keep up the good work -- you’re doing a super job! Thank you. Hastings “I look forward to ‘My Reminder’ each week. I especially thank you for your kind consideration in making a special effort to deliver my paper to my garage basket since I am handicapped and can’t walk to the mail box.” Hastings “Best newspaper ever!” Hastings “My check tells you how you’re doing.” Lake Odessa “Please don’t stop our best source of local news and happenings!” Nashville
