ew Year’s Eve revelers can ring in 2014 at one of several events throughout Barry County on Tuesday night. Hastings will host its fifth annual New Year’s Eve celebration with live music, ice sculptures, and face painting preceding the dropping of the ball from atop the Waldorff Brewpub and Bistro. Middleville debuts its first, “uplifting” of a special New Year’s ball complete with more than 3,000 LED lights and reflectors. The artistic work was created by the lighting experts at Middleville’s own LumenFlow Corp. who conducted a recent “test run” shown to Middleville officials here. The lights are programmed to flash at different speeds as the countdown nears and ends in a grand display of green, red, blue and white lights, welcoming in 2014. In Nashville, the family-friendly Snow Ball will again be held at the Kellogg Community Center from 8:30 p.m. to about 12:30 a.m. and, in Delton, the New Year will be welcomed in again with a grand display of fireworks heating up he winter evening sky following the midnight ball drop. Happy New Year Despite the economic and other problems faced by us all during 2013, we thought things were going well and that the year on South Jefferson and Downtown Hastings was better than ever. Then the worst ever ice storm during Christmas Week was a disappointment to us all. But, as always, our community responded to the emergency and certainly made the best of a bad situation. A special thanks to the workers of Consumers Energy and those who came to Hastings during their Christmas week to help restore the power in our hard hit town. If you are still without power, rest assured that they are working as fast and as safely as possible to restore it. Our thanks to all of those involved in serving those of us in need this past week. Those in business on “the street” are especially fortunate to be part of a vibrant, active portion of our community, serving our customers and employees as locally owned, independent businesses providing the best shopping, dining and other service, investing in the future of our community and providing employment for over a thousand of our friends and neighbors. All of the stores on South Jefferson Street and Downtown Hastings are open and ready to serve you. From the beginning of 2013 through the Christmas Season just past, someone fed us their favorite recipe, sang us their favorite song, danced to a favorite tune, answered one of our silly questions or in some other way participated in one of our special celebrations, not the least of which was the annual South Jefferson Street St. Patrick’s Day Parade (to be held again on March 17, 2014). The South Jefferson Street Stage (the soapbox) was a busy place throughout the year and we thank all of you who joined in the fun. Our New Year’s Resolution is to continue to improve the services, selection and special events that make a visit to “the street” so much fun. To all of our new friends and to our treasured old friends a big Happy New Year’s greeting from the Merry Merchants of South Jefferson Street and Downtown Hastings, truly the heart of our community. 1. We should all celebrate the end of this year by participating in another growing tradition, the 5th annual New Year’s Eve Ball Drop, a free event which takes place from 9 p.m. until just past midnight at Jefferson and State Streets, the main corner in Downtown Hastings. A large Ice Sculpture will be carved starting mid-afternoon, the show begins at 9 p.m. with DJ Jon Anderson and a concert by “The Class Acts Band” from 9:30-11 p.m. (new this year). The Thornapple Jazz Orchestra will take the stage at 11:45 p.m. and help Mayor Frank Campbell and host Dave McIntyre start the ball on its way from atop the Walldorff Bistro to the ground at midnight. The ball drop is followed by an awesome pyrotechnic illumination and sound display from the Walldorff Roof. New this year, the celebration will provide fire pits to help you keep warm. The festivities will conclude as we all sing “Auld Lang Syne” accompanied by the TJO. 2. Say goodbye to 2013 this year with a New Year’s special menu at the County Seat Restaurant on South Jefferson Street featuring appetizers, entress, prime rib and dessert from 4 p.m. The regular menu is also available. Also featured are special drinks from the bartender, wines or your choice or one of their ten beers on tap. The lounge will be open after midnight so you can warm up after the Hastings Ball Drop. The Seasonal Grille in Downtown Hastings will offer (in addition to their regular menu) a selection of Holiday Specials this New Year’s Eve. Celebrate New Year’s Eve in Hastings at the 5th annual Uptown New Year’s Eve Ball as you ring in the New Year with style at the Walldorff Ballroom high atop Downtown Hastings. The evening starts with a bar and appetizers at 7 pm, a Brunch Buffet starts serving at 8 p.m. including prime rib and an eclectic assortment of Italian, Asian and Southwestern food offerings. Live music by the “house band of Hastings” as the Thornapple Jazz Orchestra plays from 8:3011:30 p.m. Reservations are required and the suggested attire is semi-formal. This New Year’s Day you can stagger down “the street,” climb atop the SJS Stage (the soapbox) alone or with a friend and sing “Auld Lang Syne,” softly, warmly, woefully for all to hear and you each get a $4 gift certificate and a bag of leftover Christmas candy. If the assembled crowd joins in you each get a bag of Medbug Caramel Corn and, if you bring a tear to their eye another $1 gift certificate. (Limit 5). 7. The Great Fruitcake Toss is the most popular sporting event of the year on South Jefferson Street, held this time of year because of the large number of fruitcakes available and they are still soft enough that, hopefully, they will not hurt anyone. You must toss, hurl, throw or otherwise propel your leftover fruitcake down the street. The fruitcake that goes the farthest wins a $5 gift certificate and a Medbug Magnet. Anyone willing to eat a piece of a contesting fruitcake will get a $3 gift certificate and a bottle of Pepto Bismol. 8. Devastating beauty: Ice storm creates beauty amid disaster Less than an inch of rain fell in Barry County on Saturday, Dec. 21 but, combined with temperatures hovering around 30 to 31 degrees Farenheit, a little bit of rain quickly became a recipe for one of the largest power outages in recent years as a result of ice laden trees, branches and power lines falling. J-Ad Graphics copy editor and photographer Kathy Maurer captured these images of both the beauty and the devastation left in the wake of the holiday storm.
