elievers of all faiths mark the Easter season as special, whether celebrating the resurrection of a Savior or the freedom of a people enslaved in Ancient Egypt. Though the most holy of religious days, the Easter season and the Passover celebration speak to thoughts of peace and meaning in a world that so badly needs both. All over the greater Barry County area, Easter services will mark the significance of this special time of year. For a list and description some services, look inside. To all of our readers, neighbors, and friends, we wish you a most blessed holiday, one whose meaning will stay with us forever.

Throughout Downtown Hastings the jazz will entertain us all. As always, Jazz Festival tradition features our own Barry County House band, the Thornapple Jazz Orchestra in the Opening Night Concert next Thursday evening (April 24), 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on M-37 north of Hastings featuring special guest Earlie Braggs. This concert is free but a free will offering will be accepted to support TJO Jazz Scholarships. 2. Friday and Saturday at over 12 venues in Downtown Hastings, the heart of Jazz Festival will feature over 80 high school and professional jazz bands, jazz choirs, adult/college ensembles, steel drum (with a special concert by the Mott Middle College Steel Drum Band), regional big bands and more. All free for everyone. 3. The Friday night Headliner Concert ($10) features a performance by the Western Michigan University Gold Company (directed by Duane Davis) with special guests High School Combined Choirs. Joseph Tyner, a 13 year old seventh grader at Delton Kellogg Middle School with a rare (he may be the only person who has it) duplicate chromosome syndrome which means his body doesn’t tell him when he is hungry. The family has found a university to try and find out why, but, alas insurance won’t pay for it. So, the school has decided to begin Joseph’s Genetic Journey with a Carnival Fundraiser this Wednesday at the school from 3:30 until 6 p.m. Open to everyone the carnival will feature food, games, a silent auction, bake sale, a service auction and a lot more family fun. Admission for a single person is $5, $20 for a family. A concession stand will be open and they will take monetary donations. 12. Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be.

LOCATION Camp Algonquin is located on the shores of Algonquin Lake, a private lake just 5 miles from downtown Hastings, MI. Many have described Camp as a “Northern Michigan” retreat site nestled within 30 miles each of Grand Rapids, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo and Lansing. In addition to the six acre mainland, the camp owns an adjacent 35 acres of woodland for mountain biking and hiking. Camp Algonquin is also one of Michigan’s only camps that own an island which is used for special activities and exploring.
