In bygone days, student pranks and sports team curfew violations were a high school principal’s greatest tests. Today’s high school principals grapple with all of that plus the dysfunction society has dredged up. Half of the high schools in the Reminder’s coverage area will begin the year next week with new principals. Anthony Peterson (top) is the new principal at Thornapple Kellogg High School, Lucas Trietweiler (center) will now lead Delton Kellogg High School, and Chris Macklin is taking over as principal at Hastings High School. 1. The tremendous weather and the great work of Mike Hallifax, his steering committee, the hundreds of volunteers and participants all combined to make the 37th annual Hastings Summerfest one of the best celebrations we have ever staged in town. The great schedule of Summerfest activities, musical attractions, sports, arts and crafts and other entertainment all helped prove the old saying, “if you cannot find something about Summerfest to entertain you, the fault lies with you and not with the celebration”. Our congratulations and thanks to all who helped plan and execute an outstanding weekend for the entire community. 2. The fun continues this weekend with the 70th annual Woodland Homecoming celebration with a long list of activities today (Saturday) including breakfast at the Eagles, the famous softball tournament continues, the Big Parade starts at 1 p.m., kid’s activities in the afternoon, co-ed dodgeball, euchre, karaoke in the park and more. Sunday activities include a church service, breakfast, kid fun, softball, Stormy the Magician, a hymn sing and more. 3. The Village of Middleville celebrates their annual Heritage Day next Saturday (September 6). All events take place on Saturday with a 10K and 5K run, trolley rides, an antique car and motorcycle show, crafts, historical displays, games, food, a tractor pull and entertainment. A spooky wax museum is the lair of a demented doctor who performs plastic surgery on criminals to help them elude the police. A killer has his face changed in order to take deadly revenge on Charlie Chan. Youth will get the opportunity to learn and develop full swing skills, “short game” techniques, putting procedures, golf etiquette and playing several holes of golf. Tiny Tot Soccer will run on Monday & Tuesdays at 5:30 pm or 6:30 pm from September 16— October 7 at Camp Algonquin. These lessons introduce children to soccer with a short scrimmage at the end—no games. Teams will have fewer players to reduce confusion and help the children learn the fundamentals of the game. As a Y-Time participant your child will experience academic support, self-esteem building, and character development with the staff, but there’s much more you should know about us, like: x We’re open after school, all school year (snow days and school breaks too!) x We’re available to all children in Young 5s – 5th grades. x We keep children engaged with enriching academic activities, creative play and games. x We encourage healthy eating habits, physical activity and provide nutritious snacks. x We offer homework assistance (during the school year.) x Our staff serve as mentors to make Y-Time fun and safe. x The YMCA Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility are always promoted through all activities. Hours of Operation Regular school-year program hours are from the close of school to 6 pm. Continuous care is also available 7 am to 6 pm during school breaks.
