he ultimate Halloween treat this year may be the return of the popular and legendary Fall Carnival which, after a five-year absence, is again returning and will be at Hastings Middle School Friday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Carla Smith, who started the annual tradition at Thornapple Valley Church in 1986 with a party of just 50 people, helped a passionate group of church volunteers to build an event for the entire community that grew to more than 2,500 trick-ortreaters. Smith, holding the clapper board for this year’s revival, is now in a consultant’s role, here celebrating the event’s return with (from left) new event director, red M&M Ben Healy; yellow M&M Melinda Mills; blue M&M Renee Evans; Cowboy Chuck Bunge. M&Ms will be plentiful at the free event as will be plenty of other candy, games, and even a raffle for three electronic tablets. Look inside for the story on one of the community’s most favorite productions.

1. Now that Halloween is less than a week away it is time to get your costumes ready and your plans into action so you know where you are going to show them off! There are many activities in and around Hastings for you to enjoy with your little ones. Green Street will again be closed to traffic so the children can freely cross the streets. The children are invited to trick–or-treat from 5 to 8 in Hastings. Remember to make and wear costumes that are easy to get around in and have some light color or even better yet have actually lights on the costume or in the candy bags they carry. Have a fun and safe evening! 2. The Hastings City Police Department will be inspecting candy again this year. Meet them at the corner of Broadway and Green and they will check out your candy (without eating it, of course!) to make sure everything is okay. It’s a good opportunity to introduce your children to some of our local officers too. They will be serving hot cocoa to everyone too so it will be a good place to warm up if it turns out to be a cold evening. The Police Department is also accepting donations of cocoa mix and insulated cups if you would like to help out. 3. There will be a Fall Carnival from 5:30p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on October 31st at the Hastings Middle School. It is a free fun, safe place to play games and win candy on Halloween Night. They will have over 50 games and over 55,000 pieces of candy to hand out to children of all ages. They are asking for no scary costumes, please. 4. The ZooBoo is another fun event this time of year. The Binder Park Zoo will be open for this must see Halloween event for the entire family. The park is packed full of games, rides, animals, and trick-or-treating Wednesday through Friday 5pm-8pm and Saturday and Sundays from 1p.m.-8p.m. with Thursday the 30th being the last day. Visit their website at wwww.binderparkzoo.org for more information on this and other events. 5. Hastings Mystery Theater – This week, “Quiet Please, Murder” (1942) starring George Sanders and Richard Denning. A quiet library is the perfect place for a murder. A gentleman thief is willing to commit murder in order to steal a priceless manuscript and a private detective is determined to stop him. Thursday and Friday on WOW’s Hastings cable access channel. 6. The Hastings 4 Theater Fall Free Movies continues in Downtown Hastings today and tomorrow with showings of “How to Train Your Dragon” at 9a.m. and 10a.m. each day. The movies have a 15 minute intermission and are free to all. The concession stand sells a Classic Kid Combo or Healthy Kid Combo during the feature to those who so desire. 7. The American Red Cross has 2 blood drives coming up. October 27 at St. Ambrose Church in Delton from 11a.m. to 4:45p.m. and October 28 at Kellogg Community College Fehsenfeld Center 10a.m. to 3:45p.m. in Hastings. It’s always a good time to give blood, but often during the holidays donations decline. So before November begins and we realize January is a blink away, we need to roll up our sleeves and help out. 8. The Barry Community Enrichment Center is bringing in Celebrity Chef Mark Anthony for a Dinner and Health Class. Chef Mark Anthony has been on ABC, NBC, CBS, and appears regularly on 3ABN Worldwide television. It is a live vegetarian performing arts cooking show with three great topics of weight loss, lower cholesterol and increased energy. It will be on Sunday, November 2 at 3p.m. and seating is limited so you will want to come early or better yet, RSVP by calling 269-945-0526. 9. A Homemade Lasagna Dinner will be held by the Barry County Humane Society on November 14 from 5-8 p.m. at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 315 Center Street. Regular and meatless homemade lasagna, salad, garlic bread, homemade desserts, and choice of beverage will be served, with take-out available. The suggested donation is $9 per person, $8 for seniors 60 and over, and $7 for kids under 12. All proceeds will benefit the Humane Society’s Spay and Neuter Program. 10. The Thornapple Arts Council invites you to their 20th Annual Auction for the Arts Saturday, November 1st at 7p.m. in the Walldorff Ballroom. The evening is $35 per person and will include a complimentary champagne toast, hors d’oeuvres buffet, dessert, and full cash bar. For your bidding pleasure, there will be a variety of Live and Silent Auction items. All proceeds benefit the Thornapple Arts Council Programs. 11. Walgreens is having their Grand Opening on Wednesday, October 29, 2014. It will be complete with a Ribbon Cutting at 9:00a.m. and make sure you have your coupon letter for a special sale throughout the day. It will be a good time to check out the new store and see the different things they offer other than filling your prescriptions. You can also meet their new employees and say hello to Mike and the other employees from Bosleys. 12. Please excuse the dust and mess as we turn the former Bosley Pharmacy into The South Jefferson Street General Store. If you brave coming in while we are remodeling, you will see a curtain is up and there is a lot of noise coming from behind it. In a couple weeks, it will come down and you will see quite a transformation. We are very excited about the new changes in the store and the new merchandise coming soon. The Close Out of merchandise from the former Bosley Pharmacy continues this week with 75% off. The sale merchandise has been condensed even more but there are many items to stock up. The exceptions continue to be Little Bucky items, Greeting Cards and Candy. New hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. The new phone number is 269-945-1848. 13. Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be.

Quote: “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.”

Love for newspapers, commitment to community transcends generations Like almost everyone, I am fortunate to have a personal family. When I think about my additional families, they include the newspapers that our company produces. They also include the 300-plus employees, from reporters to graphic designers, to press people to delivery drivers that help get the paper to your doorstep or mailbox. My expanded family also includes the community that supports our operation through advertising revenue and that we cover in our news stories. My special fortune comes in seeing my personal family as part of my business family. My three children play major roles in the operation of J-Ad Graphics, Inc., just as I and my three siblings felt newspaper blood flowing through our veins thanks to my parents, Mel and Alice Jacobs, who purchased The Reminder in 1945. My brother, John, is still a key part of the business in his role as Fred Jacobs president of the firm. Heritage is, naturally, very important to me. I love my family and I love the business of which we’re all a part. Knowing that the heritage of our newspapers is also a part of the heritage I’m building as a father, a husband, and a grandfather give me great joy — and confidence. I sat down recently with my three children to discuss the state of our business, the dramatic changes in the newspaper industry, and the commitment we have to our community. It was a conversation that I thought would be of interest to our readers, especially as these last three years it’s been through your financial support we’ve been able to ensure the delivery of helpful advertising, valuable news content, and reading entertainment to you. I hope that, like me, you’ll take comfort in the assurance I take in how the next generation views the newspaper industry generally and J-Ad Graphics, Inc., specifically, as we move with you into the future. Thank you for your support. Fred Jacobs, Vice President J-Ad Graphics, Inc. Fred: I grew up in the business, as all three of you did, and I think that was the best preparation anyone could have coming into the newspaper industry. My dad knew the power of the word, but he also knew the newspaper had a responsibility to the community, as well. Jennie Yonker: I remember going along with Grandma every Saturday, picking up ads and news copy. She had a route and she spent time with everyone at every stop. Carrie Larabee: And she usually bought something, too. I don’t think she ever bought anything from anybody outside our community. Carrie Larabee

Jennie: I think that’s one thing that hasn’t changed in our business, you spend more time with advertisers, you build a relationship. Today, it’s almost like you’re an advertising agency, you’re offering advice, you’re a consultant because, a lot of times, a business owner has no idea how to effectively market their product. Jon Jacobs: At the end of Jennie Yonker the day, that’s what it comes down to: relationships — on the news side, too. We highlight the great things in our communities, but we also work on identifying the problems, too, and then what we need to work on them. That takes relationships. Fred: Dick Guenther, our former school superintendent, knew the value of that balance. He knew that unpleasant things sometimes would happen and sometimes they would become newspaper stories. So, to balance it out, he used his relationship with us to constantly be providing good stories. Jon: That’s why a newspaper is so powerful in a community, even in this day of social media. When you write a letter to the editor, you sign your name. When people make comments on social media they can be anonymous or sign with some crazy name. Social media is dumbing down society. Fred: You’re right. There’s a lack of critical thinking skills today and I believe a community gets more of that Jon Jacobs if it has a newspaper. Jon: I’ve been part of a polling effort with the Computer Newspaper Association in which we asked people how they like to receive their political news during the current mid-term election campaign. Seventy nine percent of the public responded that they prefer making their decisions based on what they read in the newspaper. Why? Because they said what they read in the newspaper is believable. Jennie: Technology has changed the industry, but it’s been a big help, too. I remember that when I started in 1994 there was no e-mail. I picked up ad copy and drove proofs back to customers in Sparta, Richland, Cedar Springs, Grand Rapids, Caledonia. It is exciting to see what we can do with technology in our industry today. Fred: Everything’s almost instantaneous today, but it’s still important to get good stories. Carrie: But you’ll still always have stories, so you’ll still always need newspapers. I can’t tell you now many people have come in and come in again for reprints of pictures we took of their children or grandchildren. And you can’t make a scrapbook out of the pictures on your phone. Jon: I don’t worry about the fact that we may have to adapt in the future, we can’t do it all. I just believe that what you can do, you keep doing better.

For your convenience, we’ve enclosed a volunteer funding envelope or you can go online at www.hastingsreminder.com and use our Crowd-Funding site to contribute.
