Thanks to some caring and visionary community leaders, a group of county high school students is getting a leg up on the job hunting process and a foot in the door of potential employers by learning the art of “soft skills,” those personal qualities and habits, attitudes and social graces that sometimes turn the eye and establish the interest of an interviewer. Delton Kellogg student Alex Kulinski is one who’s received immeasurable assistance from Commercial Bank’s Chelsey Foster. 1. The annual Barry-Roubaix Killer Gravel Road Race is today (Saturday) in Downtown Hastings. The race features 62 mile (The Killer), 36 mile (The Thriller) and 24 mile (The Chiller) options with cash and prizes worth over $18,000. The race is expected to include up to 3500 racers. Race waves start at 10 a.m. and go off every 3 minutes starting in front of the First Methodist Church in Downtown Hastings. Most racers will finish between noon and 1:30 p.m. on the corner of Church St. and Center St. You are invited to encourage the racers and to participate with bells, whistles, any noise along the curb to cheer on the racers during the race. 2. The Founder’s After Party and Awards will be open to the public from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in the Barry Community Foundation Parking lot, open to the public, featuring Beer Service, DJ Music, Food Vendors (cash only), the Podium Awards Ceremony and jammin’ on the awards stage by the “Sweet J Band” until 6 p.m. For more information log on to www.downtownhastings.com. 3. Don’t forget to visit the race and give a big cheer for Kevin Dickinson, riding the “Med Bike” in the “Chiller Division,” representing Bosley Pharmacy in the race. 4. As all three approach execution, the professor must find out who shot first in order to save the other two murderers.
